Before, not after, but yeah it was discussed above.

Mechanisms of autoimmunity and investigation of a specific peptide in triggering T1DM

That's what I was confused about, hadn't heard of anyone doing Honours after postgrad. Is it even possible?

I'm a first year commerce student. I do want to get good grades but is it really THAT important that I get 80+ for all my first semester first year subjects? I mean, they don't really count for much right?

My philosophy on grades has always been to just never accept anything less than what you're capable of. So they might not *count* so much as they will in later years, but what's holding you back from getting 80+ now? You have to start somewhere and I think sooner is better than later (: Having a perfect GPA after 3 years would be nice, too!

They will be important if you apply for summer internships during 2nd year. The HR won't have any other grades to look at apart from maybe Semester 1 2nd year. As long as you don't fail it should be ok.

what if you do fail / get bad marks are you screwed?

Summer Internships are sort of like work placements that accounting/consulting firms and banks etc offer, mostly to students in their penultimate year. You can apply for them early/during second year and there's a long selection process. If you are successful, you get to work in a section of the firm during the summer holidays, getting some experience in the industry. From what I've heard and know, it's pretty useful to try and get one - not only does it give you some exposure to the industry and looks good on your resume, but also if they like you enough they'll offer you a grad position, saving you the time and effort in third year. I would say that yes, in terms of these things marks would matter and they'd be the basis for the first round of culling applications, but they're not the only thing that the firms will consider, they want well rounded people.
Agree with what charmanderp said, if you think you can get 80+ why not go for it? It'll probably come in handy somewhere later on the track, could boost your average etc. Just try your best.
I wouldn't say you are "screwed" if you get bad marks or fail, I know of some people who have got vac work having failed a subject but obviously I'd be making more of an effort next semester to try and pick your grades up. (But there's still time, you won't necessarily be screwed as you might think)

If you fail a subject, I think you have to repeat it? So you'll probably graduate a year later or something, because you'll have to wait for the subject to become available again.

Also, it makes it less likely that you'll get an internship over the summer.

Usually happens every year, it's pretty full on if you've never seen that sort of thing before.

Did anyone else register for ADAM (Another Day at Melbourne)? I'm actually really excited to be getting back into debating, and the standard is totally different to what it was in high school. From my panic-induced researching and YouTubing it's not quite so overly structured and oppressive as DAV debating was. Not that this was necessarily a bad thing but I feel like DAV high school debating is sometimes more about what you don't do, rather than what you do. There are so many rigid formalities that somehow have spread throughout the entire state, and it can be limiting.

Yay uni!

You make it seem so alarming.

You wont have to graduate later if you're in commerce, because a lot of subjects are available over a summer semester, so if you fail you can catch up and resume regular progression by doing another subject over a summer. nearly all of the first year commerce subjects are available across both semesters so whatever you may fail this semester should be available next semester as well.

re: internships, a lot of firms just have a minimum 65 average requirement. There is a lengthy application and interview process that goes along with that, so they consider a range of factors other than just pure grades. Given you are above the minimum and have other desirable skills, you will still have a chance at securing an internship. However good grades will obviously always be more helpful than not-as-good grades (all other things equal).

@sadboy222, just try your best not to fail, and work hard next semester to make sure your average is looking alright. Its not the end of the world.
