I got the equivalent of a 96.10 ATAR and I am just scraping an 80% average. Uni isn't that easy for some.
2008 - 2010 | Bachelor of Production @ Victorian College of the Arts
2013 - 2015 | Bachelor of Science @ UoM (Bioengineering Systems)
2016 - 2017 | Master of Engineering (Biomedical) @ UoM

It's better to have a lax SEAS system and help those who actually need it (plus more who might not), rather than having a strict SEAS system where some of those who actually need it miss out. Which is what happens currently, it's never going to be an even playing field no matter what you do, but at least accounting for some of the discrepancy allows those who do have the potential but weren't able to utilise it during year 12 due to some circumstances, to go on and be able to give uni a good shot on a more level playing field. If anything, most of those I know who got SEAS are those who go above what is needed and do well at uni (anecdotal evidence, but still).

EDIT: Spelling.

A guy from my school; who went out every weekend, barely trying at school and was known as the "class clown"; got into Arts but with an ATAR of ~65 with SEAS for being 1/4 Aboriginal. A girl who was "depressed" (one of the more 'popular' girls at school who was always talking/texting during class and spare periods...) got into Science but with an ATAR of 77 or so.

Whilst I sympathise and agree with most of what you've said, there's something worryingly Andrew Boltish about this statement ^

I don't know anything about you "Inside Out", so I don't want to come off as sounding presumptuous.

I get the distinct impression you haven't experienced any form of disadvantage. It's like you're saying, "Well, it shouldn't be that hard to get X ATAR, despite experiencing this and that".

I'll just say this, to an extent you really have to experience being disadvantaged, in order to understand it. So, for instance, attending a terrible school. It's easy for people to say, "You can just work hard at any school and things will come your way". It isn't as simple as that. Try attending a school where you're being persecuted for your race, and yes that does happen in schools. Try attending a subject where the teacher has been partying with your peers the night before and hence, doesn't give a rats arse about teaching the class in general but, instead, wants to socialise with their "friends" i.e your peers. Try learning in an environment where disruptions are the norm, where discipline isn't actively enforced. This isn't even applicable to all "terrible" schools. Not all schools can be categorically defined by these "norms". Some exhibit it, some don't.

And that's just one "factor" that people can experience. How about an abusive family environment? Or an underlining medical condition ? Or this and that .... (I can't list everything at the top of my head)

But what I am trying to say is, I think you're generalising too much. Oh, and I know someone who got an ATAR of 84~ and topped a few of his units last year, at UoM. So I really doubt there is, to an extent, a correlation between ATAR and Uni grade.

Also, I'd say the SEAS system isn't perfect. Sure, people abuse it and I know a few people myself  who did but, at the end of the day, it does help those few who do need it. It's honestly better than nothing.

I just think it's unfair how people who are really passionate about science get 88  but can't get into science  because they don't have seas. So basically the cohort has students in the upper and lower end but not really any in between. Doesn't really make any sense.
Unimelb is just trying to gain money from students. I know 4 people who got in via seas, they have all transferred out of the course now. I know that that doesn't apply to everyone but still, it says something.

Sorry, but 4/2000 students doesn't say much. And while I'm getting the impression that you think SEAS is a flawed system, it's the only valid one we have. I'm all for pride, and self-achievement, but you rather people who actually have issues to not get a helping hand and missing out on the course entirely?

Also, ATAR =/= uni GPA. There is a correlation, but it isn't definite.

I needed to sit a make up practical for Chemistry last week and I don't know how to get my report back. My actual demonstrator didn't know and didn't have the paper.

Yeah got mst results back for biol10002... 22/25 not over the moon idk don't really care though. It's just frustrating because I wanna know what I got wrong but I don't know if we get any feedback. Is there some way we can reread the questions to see what we did wrong?

Edit: I got a question wrong that only 3 people in my entire prac group got wrong. Hahahaha. Why. Just why.

You won't get any feedback unfortunately.

I needed to sit a make up practical for Chemistry last week and I don't know how to get my report back. My actual demonstrator didn't know and didn't have the paper.

Same thing happened to me - I got it back maybe 2-3 practicals later. I think my demonstrator from my make-up prac gave it to my actual one.
