If anyone needed any more proof that the SA and affiliated groups are nothing but a bunch of thugs, here it is. I disagree with what I see as the lack of proper consideration for social equity in the budget as well, but what these Socialist idiots did is just short of assault.

The day where their organisation is discredited and disaffiliated across Australian universities will be a good one indeed.

It's interesting that everyone jumps on their high horse when a politician gets jostled around a little bit, yet the kind of brutality in detention centres that Sophia Mirabella in particular is an ardent fan of is seemingly less important.

Disclaimer: I was obviously uncomfortable watching this and think, like any sane person, that the Socialist Alternative are a pack of nut jobs.

And the best part is that they think people will take them seriously because they got into the media. Attacking someone during a lecturer where other students are trying to learn does not give your cause any legitimacy amongst your peers who you're trying to sway to your side.

I wonder if uom will punish those involved?

I refute this, because no one is claiming that mistreatment of asylum seekers is "less important". Regardless of how distasteful and wrong someone's political views are, they shouldn't be subject to violence and thuggery because of them or because of some nutjobs are pushing for a 'revolution' that will never happen.

These SA people would (rightly so) be concerned about state violence of any sort, but they're quite happy to dole it out themselves. It's pathetic and hypocritical, like their organisation and all of their members.

I know nobody is claiming that. It's just interesting that everyone has been united (as in left and right) on their condemnation of a bit of rough and tumble for a politician, yet the idea of whether or not refugees are being treated properly is so divisive.

I really should stress again that the way they behaved is ridiculous. The protest on QandA and against Julie Bishop were both way overdone, but this was way too far.

The protest on qanda was fairly tame, but the actions against Bishop were uncalled for. This latest attack on Mirabella was disgusting, disrespectful, and disruptive to the people who genuinely wanted to listen to the lecture.

Whether you're left, right, backwards or upside down it's hard to reason that the SA are doing themselves any good with the way they go about their business. They are hypocritical, fallacious, and really just childish at this point.

There was a group of school kids (Y11 or 12s) going for a tour of uni, and what is the first thing they see at union house? A group of students wearing 'Fuck Tony Abbott' shirts, shouting about how their Vice-Chancellor is a money hungry parasite. What sort of message are they really sending?

The Bishop protest was nothing. You get more rough and tumble at a Sunday market. Some people stood in her way, her security guards pushed through. Conclusion: she is to socialists what Moses is to the red sea.

Were they the same ones that wouldn't shut up about the Ditch the Witch signs being disrespectful?

The difference is that at the markets the hustle and bustle isn't aggressively targeting one person (unless they got the last mango). By SA standards it wasn't too bad but it's still not on IMO.

yeah, I didn't like it either to be honest, but it was overdone. Christopher Pyne calling everyone from Labor sooks one minute, then claiming Julie Bishop was assaulted... Calm down mate! haha

You guys realise Sophie Mirabella once beat up a girl in an elevator over a political disagreement while she was at uni right? SA is tame and fluffy compared to the generation above us.

Yeah, because two wrongs make a right. Irrespective of whether the SA is tame and fluffy compared to the past, it's not innocent in and of itself.

Based on what I've heard about some of the SA's more radical members, it's no behaviour limited to the previous generation either...

These are the same people who co-opt and poison good causes with their vitriol wherever they can. They fling abuse at anyone who doesn't see things the exact same way as they do. They might see themselves as far left but they're as authoritarian as any extreme fascist collective.

To adopt Bernard-Henri Levy's terminology, they're Red Fascists and proponents of Neo-Barbarism.

In fact, I have more to say about this. I'm going to do what I'd never thought I'd do, and that is stand up for the Socialist Alternative.

Now, I'm a fan of neither party involved in this incident. But I was also particularly horrified by the complete logical inconsistencies, outrageously rhetorical claims and vitriolic remarks that were posted on the unimelb confessions page. I was first angered and saddened by the comments about the protest on QandA, and now I feel the same about this.

It is completely disempowering to be a youth in today's society. If you are vocal about your beliefs you're a troublemaker, disrespectful and ill-behaved. If you do nothing, you're ignorant, lazy and self-absorbed, but you're also acceptable, because you lie within a large group of people who are politically malleable and easy to take advantage of. The deregulation of university fees won't have any significant effect on politics in Australia - that is, unless it makes its way to mainstream media and develops a large backing from the majority. Socialist Alternative, in that regard, is doing a good thing. They're taking an issue and consistently placing it back in mainstream media as a way of forcing people to realise that there is a strong opposition to the deregulation. I agree that it's a little puerile, I've posted in this thread before about how I don't like their way of going about things - but shit, what have any of us done that's so much better?

Moreover, there is no 'appropriate' or 'inappropriate' time to protest. I can only imagine this generation's response to revolutions they probably see as 'justified' in modern day society.

Eureka stockade: Oh god, can't you just write a letter to colony complaining? Or sign a petition? I really don't like all this thuggish behaviour!

Rosa parks bus sit in: Damnit Rosa, you're totally disrupting me from getting home. Can't you just stand up and like, talk to the bus driver afterwards to try and explain your point of view?

Stonewall riots: You guys totally didn't have to get violent. Can't you just show them your identity cards and get on with your repressed homosexual lifestyle?? It's not like it makes a difference anyway. No one's gonna respect you more if you flaunt your sexuality in our faces!

Do you guys see what I'm getting at? I know, I'm making more enemies in this thread by the day, I just really feel it was important to put this into perspective.

Edited for typos.
