It depends a lot on the department and the supervisor. There's a minimum faculty average of 65, but finding a place would (I imagine) be quite challenging. Places like WEHI you'd need a H1 average to be realistically competitive.

For getting into honours in some areas, it's not about your WAM/GPA (as long as you get above the minimum) - rather, it's how you do in relevant 2nd/3rd year subjects (with a 20:80 weighting respectively).

At the place where I am at it's all third year level subjects (not subjects your did in third year). Average needs to be around 75 to get in, 80+ is competitive.

I should've taken the offer to do a b-psych+honours at la trobe when i had the chance. Now I'm going to spend the next three years trying to get a high gpa/wam. What have I done.

Well...on the plus side, I found that second semester of first year was more interesting than the first semester. Then I found that second year was better then first year. Maybe once I've finished third year I'll say the same (but right now second year seems like the winner of the two).

Anyway, MBB2 is a pretty reasonable subject (I presume you'll be taking it) in terms of what you'll have to do so that you do well, same with second sem. biology. I wouldn't be worrying too much (yet). Besides, second year in general has way more depth; first year is really just a taste of what's to come. By this I mean that in first year, they introduce lots of concepts but don't really elaborate much; by second year, you start to do things that are increasingly interrelated.

Take BCMB20002 for example: we started with protein structure and folding, then looked at enzyme kinetics (i.e., how proteins interact), then looked at how DNA and proteins are replicated and manufactured at a molecular level, then applied those topics for lipids and membranes, and finally for metabolism.

"Write part a and part b in seperate booklets"

*accidentally writes both on the same booklet for one question*

Wrote a note on other booklet saying whoops sorry, got paranoid, spent 6 mins copying a shitty diagram to another booklet and making it shittier.

Yeah. In my experience most MDHS departments are pretty similar. In my department it is an average of all third year subjects (although I think they might be changing this in the near future.)

Worth pointing out, that for many science honours programs the supervisor has a large degree of discretion (it's a bit different, AFAIK, for arts/economics).

BIOM20001 exam B was this big evil cloud hanging over me the whole semester, and it boiled down into something that wasn't scary at all. To me, it was exactly like sitting my Year 12 Biology exam. The format was very favourable and I don't think timing would have been an issue for too many people. I also loved how the focus wasn't always on regurgitating details, but being able to make inferences from observations and apply knowledge. All in all, I'm glad I can say that I survived BIOM20001! :D

I found first year biology a small step up from Year 12 biology. To me it wasn't exceptionally challenging. Not that I want to put down your achievement of completing the subject!
