I hear that third year is the most difficult year of Biomedicine, yet I look at my contact hours and it seems like I'll have a heap of free time. Man, I hope the difficulty doesn't eat all that time up. :/ Enjoy your first week back! :)

You spend most of that free time freaking out at the amount of shit you need to know. My brain felt like exploding quite a few times last year. Good luck with M2M.

And remember that Frontiers is the best subject you will do in undergrad.

Yes, this is what I keep hearing. Perhaps I shouldn't get too excited about the low number of contact hours then. :P

An extremely common tale in biomed is: "...and then things got worse"

This applies to semester 2, not semester 1. ;)

It does, but the year is also far more rewarding. You really feel like you're doing some cool shit in third year, which makes it all worth it.

I have a chemistry practical class tomorrow, do you think we'll actually be doing something? Like do I need to bring my lab coat and safety glasses to the first practical? Cheers

I don't know how to quote, so thank you for recommending the 'House of Cards'. The coffee aint cheap at a smooth $4 hahaha! But I can see myself forking out the cash anyway... I'd prefer to stay awake during the day.

My first chemistry prac isn't until next Thursday  8) I didn't realise there would be a prac running on the first day. I assume you bring your lab work book, the a4 carbon paper book, lab coat and glasses though. :-)

Also a query on that, I've read through the first prac (making paracetamol) and I'm a bit nervous at doing it on my own. Will they demo the first prac? Are chemistry pracs always individual? Are we allowed to ask for assistance if we don't know how to carry out particular steps?

Hey,
I was browsing through the prescribed text for biomolecules and cells and was wondering if the textbook is better used as a door step.
From my perspective, the amount of bold formatted words and dot points could be the centre of some drinking game at a frat party. Is the stuff in this book essential, cause I looked at some slides and its pretty barren. I don't quite know how to go about efficient study for biomed. For me, in VCE, my textbook was my life. Any tips?

Omg that paracetamol prac was f**king awful. I had a substitute demonstrator who was so vague. The poor guy next to me didn't know he needed to chill his water so when he tried to clean the crude product he ended up dissolving the whole thing or something. It all just fell through the funnel and he was left with nothing.
Anyway, I don't mean to scare you jaffies. First year chem pracs were terrible but you'll hate them collectively as a cohort so it''ll bring you together and you'll help each other out through the ordeal. Hopefully you'll have nice demonstrators as well.

@Auralee I don't recall the demonstrators ever doing a demo prac first. At most they'll show you how to use instruments and/or how to start off. But they'll float around the whole time to help you out and answer any questions so if your demonstrator is extra nice like mine was you'll be fine. I remember a lot of pracs being done in pairs (or in a group of 3 if there was someone without a partner).

HAHAHA that paracetamol prac. I got impatient with my Buchner filter so I blew on top of my powder, only for it to billow up into my face. XD Not only did I significantly reduce my yield (and thus my mark), but I had to go and wash my face because I could feel some of the acid residue burning me.

LOL I think I forget how terrible I am at pracs haha. It's no wonder I'm doing a practical-free neuroscience major this year. ^_^

The main source of information is the lecture slides. You only use the textbook to support your learning if you feel like you need to go elsewhere to clear something up.

Hahaha, my mind feels scrambled atm after reading through it. Maybe I'll draw myself a few pictures so I can visualise what I'm going to do. The first one is always a bit stressful. Poor guy, that would have been awful for his confidence.

That's a relief, I hope my demonstrators are nice too. :)
