Personally, I actually liked the flipped classroom approach (because my campus is small and very big on this active learning thing)- allowed me to learn the content in the way I wanted, whilst making the lectures way more interactive and enjoyable- heck one of my lecturers interrupted their lectures last year by showing us photos of her trip to Greece; and another told us stories of when she worked in industry all the time, something that wouldn't exactly happen in a standard lecture :)

That's nice, to clarify I would have 0 problem if it was in a small campus or uni I think it can work very well.

The way it's set up though at the moment I'm not a fan.

I'm interested as to why it wouldn't it work well at Clayton/Caulfield, can you clarify that? :)

I don't know about Caulfield but Clayton has much larger rooms and class sizes. So it would be very difficult to effectively implement what they're trying to do,

The campus isn't designed for a approach like that I don't see it working at all it would just be more distruptice to the status quo than anything.

Hi guys,

Just wondering, do people bring textbooks to the first lecture/lab/tutes? And, what should I bring in my bag on the first day? :)

Thanks!

Probably depends on the course, but nah, people don't tend to bring textbooks - they're just too heavy to lug around, and you tend to use them for independent study at home and for readings and such. I think I've only ever brought a textbook to uni once, and that was only because the prac tutor specifically said to bring a certain textbook for one prac.
If you need a textbook when you're studying at the library, you can usually just go grab a copy off the shelf :)

In your bag, I'd pack:
- laptop
- notebook/writing equipment (in case your laptop carks it or you want to write stuff down by hand)
- food (cheaper than buying lunch on campus) - lunch, snacks, etc.
- wallet
- water

I personally always bring headphones too :)

nah not really although they may come in hand during tutorials. Many students would just bring the textbooks in pdf form though.

Well I reckon you should take a laptop + charger, notebooks, stationary, monash ID anything you are required for assesment (e.g. prac manuals/ worksheet booklets) + snacks if get hungry ;) So nothing too special or different from highschool.

EDIT: beaten by K888 and yes headphones are a must (especially during elections)

I too must agree on the headphones.

Something must be done about the noise during elections.

The noise didn't worry me; it was getting through Campus Centre without being hassled.

And it's times like this that I'm super glad that I don't have to deal with this at Parkville :P

Jaffy question: What are these 'elections'?

Ohhh, thanks for that! :D

Also, I have a lecture at 10 tomorrow and it came to my mind, do I just stand/wait outside the lecture if I get there 5-10mins early until the lecturer arrives? If there was no lecture before your class, would people usually go in and find a seat before it starts?

I was not that intrested in that type of politics so don't know too much but I think it's for electing those who run the MSA (monash student association) - there might also be other electiosn not too sure.

If there is no one inside you can go and find a seat as early as you like tbh - no one ever really waits for the lecturer.
