^ That's what my unimaths teacher did as well, BSci(Advanced) or something for the smart kiddies.

@thushan same goes for my English teacher this year who used to go to PLC and is really smart and people are like "why would you want to come back here to teach?" You may know her, Mrs Thomson? she used to teach at Scotch. Best English teacher EVER and she's younger and less experienced than most of the others. Actually, come to think of it, my unimaths teacher is also younger and less experienced than the rest of the maths staff. Maybe decades of teaching breaks their morale or something.

EDIT: +1 Paul, teaching is fun when you teach something you love and the kids are interested. That's why I'm volunteering to tutor refugee kids next year, I love watching people's lightbulb moments when they get what you're talking about.

I leave for a day and this thread starts becoming about paulsterio's love life... AGAIN...

But yeah, I know a few 99+ kids doing teaching, and they usually get the "WTF why would you do that" look when asked about uni etc...

Actually, I loved teaching other people - that was part of the motivation for me to give the lectures - but my parents stamped on that, giving me the WTF look and saying that they'd pull me out of scotch and chuck me back into mill park if i was gonna be a teacher.

Thing is that gvt does not pay teachers well esp for the amount of work they do, demand for becoming a teacher drops, ATAR requirements for a BEd drops, bad rep for teachers in terms of prestige...that sucks.

The pay scale is balanced by the massive amounts of holidays. My mum is a teacher (firstly at a secondary school, now at a specialist disability school) and she values the actual job and the holidays far more than the pay.

Anyways, yeah I know hey? I don't know why people look down on teaching, it's not a bad job by any means :S

My parents were once against me being a teacher, but they seem to think it's quite a good profession now (really good job security)!

I know, my physics teacher got three 50's LOL! :D he's a gun, he took on a scholarship to do a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Monash, the awesome one where you can do it all in 3 years with individual guidance, and then he became a teacher
But yeah, I hate the negative mentality towards teachers, I think it's the stigma, like I actually honestly do want to become a teacher, I enjoy teaching others! But yeah, who knows, I might become one some day :D
I remember my physics teacher saying that some of the guys in his DipEd cohort couldn't even get 60% on the methods exam and they wanted to teach methods, I think that's kind of stupid don't you think :S

Your physics teacher sounds awesome!
At my school there is only one physics teacher and he sucks. He teaches physics and further maths in year 11 and 12. He doesn't even understand half of what he's teaching and he never answers questions.
He never did maths methods and he admitted that he failed one of his year 12 further maths SAC's. When he finished school, he spent 1 year doing physics at Monash and then got a teaching degree. His ENTER score was probably between 60 and 75.
With teachers like him, it's no surprise that people look down upon teachers.

What about teachers that don't necessarily deserve any more than they get? The problem is it's very hard to distinguish (with a lot of social repercussions too) between the 'good' and 'bad' teachers.
