Do university students use backpacks?

I recently received an offer for an undergraduate of Arts at the University of Melbourne. My problem is; how do I bring textbooks/laptop to and from university? Do students use a backpack anymore?

Also, as an Arts student would a laptop be recommended (I've already got a Macbook Pro and an iPad 2)? I'm an extremely slow writer but an extremely fast touch-typer so a laptop would definitely do me justice! I've heard that not many people use the aid of laptops during lectures though - why is this?.

Do we get a traditional booklist like we did back in high school?

You don't need to bring books to uni, you don't really need them in any classes. Laptops are optional depending on whether you want to do work at uni. You usually just need to bring stationary and lecture notes/tute notes. Yes uni students use back packs as well..

^What Hellrocks said, backpacks are common and definitely socially acceptable at uni.

And you can purchase lockers as well to store bags/laptops/whatever in. There's places you can charge your laptop too - if I did Arts I'd bring a laptop along. It's also very useful for Engineering students, especially if you manage to buy/illegally download MATLAB.
The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.

Backpacks are the way to go. Also barely if ever bring a textbook unless I plan to study outside of lectures/classes.

That awkward moment when you have a satchel that looks like that.  8)

It's up to the individual whether they use a laptop or not in the lecture theatre. A lot do, but an equal number use stationary instead. I actually prefer printing the lecture slides out and writing notes on them, then word processing them later on that day. Means you're going through the content twice, and it also means you won't be distracted with Facebook 45 minutes into a two hour lecture (which happened to me almost every single time last year).

Can someone tell me what uni books are like, are there many per subject, do they only last a semester, do they come with CDs and what not

They're not that organised because there is no set curriculum for uni (barring some disciplines where it's sort of structured I guess).  You usually get a booklist of sorts but most of the time the texts on there are barely referred to. It's about making use of many resources and doing it efficiently. Some textbooks have e-versions and some don't. Usually pretty thick and hard to navigate because you have relevant material for one topic running through many chapters. But some subjects are different.

I dont see many people using laptops, it seems like more trouble than is necessary. Most end up on facebook or angry birds anyway.

Absolutely plenty of people use backpacks, nothing wrong with that at all.

This year i plan to use a messenger bag but i'm already regretting it, realising how much stuff i carry around (long train ride, usually do my work or read the textbook half the time = heavy(dont care)/prone to breaking (already broke 2 backpacks)

All you really need is lecture notes and a pen. For labs/tutes maybe an exercise book/Goggles/Lab coat/Calculator.
