Hey, I'm an Arts student and need some help with timetabling for science subjects (namely BIOL10004 - Biology of Cells and Organisms).  I asked the Science Students Society person and they said I'd be able to figure it out on the day which doesn't help lol.

How exactly do you timetable for science subjects?

Looking at the timetable - https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/subjects.pl?scode=BIOL10004&year=2013 - the only thing listed are workshops (all W01/x) and lectures (L01/a, L02/b and L03/c).

The thing is, the handbook - https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2013/BIOL10004 - says I need to do the following:

"Contact Hours: 3 x one hour lectures per week, 18 hours of workshops (1 hour of theory workshop and 2 hours of practical workshop per fortnight), 6 hours of additional problem solving classes (1 hour per fortnight), 24 hours of pre-and post laboratory activities (2 hours per week), 24 hours of e-learning, online activities including independent learning tasks (2 hours per week)."

So do I just select one W01, one L01, one L02 and one L03?

Thanks!!

For bio you will need to choose three lecture times (L), and one workshop (W). The Workshop includes both a "tutorial" and a "practical" (i.e. so you are just choosing a workshop time as opposed to times for a tutorial and a practical since they are in succession).
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

Sweet, thanks for that.

Also, normally events happen on Tuesday afternoons, right?  Are there any other times we should try and avoid scheduling lectures/tutes/etc?

I think repeat lectures in general can be pretty draining especially if they take up the last hour of a 6-7 hr day at uni, it's better to go to one of the earlier lectures. Times I would encourage for tutes (for bachelor of science) would be towards the end of the week, I found they ran through the material that was taught during that week as opposed to the previous week. Finishing off a friday with a tutorial helped me out because I could ask the tutor some questions at the end since I had nothing else on :) I wouldn't be too worried though if you have to schedule a tutorial a bit earlier in the week.

A heads-up for the bio prac: They hold a mid semester test during the time of one of your pracs during the semester. For that reason, I found timetabling the prac earlier in the week was better because that way you don't have to revise during the week whilst balancing assignments etc.

^ Thanks for your advice, really appreciate it.

How does this timetable look?  I know Monday and Wednesday are pretty full-on but most of the subjects on those days are ones I can't take at other times as they're only offered on those days.

Monday
SPAN 10007 T01/1 - 10:30am - 12:00pm (John Medley 532)
MECM 10003 L01/1 - 1:00pm - 2:00pm (The Spot building)
BIOL 10004 L01/3 - 3:15pm - 4:15pm (Arts West-Copland)

Tuesday
BIOL 10004 W01/5 - 9:00am - 12:00pm (Redmond Barry - 210)
POLS 10001 T01/3 - 3:15pm - 4:15pm (Redmond Barry - 1007)

Wednesday
BIOL 10004 L02/1 - 9:00am - 10:00am (Arts West-Copland)
MECM 10003 L02/1 - 10:00am - 11:00am (ERC - Charles Pearson)
SPAN 10007 T02/5 - 2:00pm - 3:30pm (Babel-217)

Thursday
MECM 10003 T01/6 - 9:00am - 10:00am (757 Swanston St - 409)
POLS 10001 L01/1 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm (ERC - Charles Pearson)

Friday
BIOL 10004 L03/1 - 9:00am - 10:00am (Arts West-Copland)

Thoughts?  I only have back-to-back classes on Wednesday morning; is travelling between West-Copland and ERC - Charles Pearson alright?  Any suggestions?

Cheers.

How come on the schedule it says that the class is from 9 - 9:45

but according to the subject description you have to attend "two 1 hour lectures?"

so do they go for 45 mins or an hour?

Hmm, anyone had any luck with pressing "Generate a random timetable"?? LOL.

I did the whole meticulous planning thing last year but now I'm not sure if I'm bothered. :x

For anyone who's done the timetabling before, how do we actually allocate each subject into a time slot? Looks all very confusing to me.

If you go to the student portal, log in, and click on 'my timetable/register for classes' (something along the lines of that) scroll down and there will be a link to a video that shows how to do it.

What do you guys think of my timetable? I tried to make it as dense as possible to allow me a day off on Thursday and every second week on Tuesday. I want to be able to work on these days.
