Why do you think so many schools seem to choose sulfuric acid? I also heard that ethene got cut from the course due to low numbers in previous years. I wonder why...

Just seems to relate better to the rest of the course, and the equations you do with it are pretty easy. I guess it's more relevant. It's kind of perplexing still. That explanation doesn't really warrant the huge numbers. Maybe it's just a cooler chemical?

Let's face it, the structure of sulfuric acid itself is pretty cool. I mean, sulfur with six bonds? That's already outside the scope of VCE. Then you have the fact that concentrated sulfuric acid is an inordinately strong acid; H3SO4+ is stronger than H3O+ which is why the former isn't present in aqueous solution.
Off topic: HF is a weak acid in normal situations but its acidity increases remarkably as its concentration approaches 100% too due to the equilibrium 3HF <=> H2F+ + FHF-. Yep you read right.

Back on topic. Sulfuric acid also dehydrates pretty neatly as well and it's miscible with water. Its "conjugate base" is one of the strongest acids I know of that has a negative charge (HSO4- pKa around 1.99). What else do you want from sulfuric acid?

Won't be saying that when you're doing it in Chem next year... Hate the prick of a chemical  >:(

It used to be part of the core course in the 2000 to 2005 study design (http://web.archive.org/web/20040828023626/http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/VCE/STUDIES/chemistry/ChemistrySD.pdf page 26 U3O3). Similar to why structures and materials, sound is so popular as a detailed study in Physics, they also used to be apart of the core course.

Our class just completed the Sulfuric acid SAC! My teacher chose it due to it having the best compromise for equilibrium conditions regarding the catalyst and a lower temperature being used. Glad it's not on the exam as their is SO much detail involved, good practice for doing equations though :)

A revision tutorial is avaliable for sulfuric acid. Details the production, equilibrium factors, uses and safety of the chemical. All which could be assessed under SAC conditions.

Enjoy
