What would you guys do if you knew a group of people were cheating in your class?

That sucks man.
I guess it's up to you how you go about dealing with it, but the options that come to mind for me are:

-Ignore it and do your best.
-Talk to your teacher, or someone senior at your school who you trust not to go and start a war against the offenders (unless that's what you want). This person will hopefully know the appropriate way of dealing with this in your school in particular.
-Tell your teacher. You just want to be careful with this option as it has the potential to create a hostile environment if your peers single you out as the 'dobber'..

Tricky stuff. Hopefully it all works out okay :)

Well, in my current further maths class, over 70% of the students have cheated in their data analysis and geometry/trigonometry SAC. However, this does not affect me and I did not inform the teacher because I still got higher than everybody (FYI I didn't cheat).

So, i guess it's only a problem if they have a higher rank than you because they will fuck up your SAC mark due to statistical moderation, assuming they do bad in the exam. If this is the case, I STRONGLY recommend telling the teacher because this will greatly affect your studyscore/ATAR.

Be a dob.

They have no right to be dabbling in this stuff, it ruins the VCE experience (if you can call it an experience) for everyone else. Rankings aren't to be trifled with, they can seriously impact on your ATAR and study scores.

There was a student who was basically unanimously cheating (by changing answers) (half the class knew it) but no one reported him. In the end, someone (or the teacher found out) did, and now the school scans all SACs so they can see whether you rubbed out your answer or not.

If it's regarding collaboration, most teachers make students sit a desk apart, or make you sit away from your friends and next to more hostile students.

There's a way to deal with most types of cheating, and it's vital that you hammer it down right now before it inflates. It's not your problem, it's theirs.

What they used to do at my school was get highlighters and highlight the "answers" you wrote - so apparently you wouldn't be able to go back and change them. I'm not acutally sure if it works :P I've never tried! But it's a lot of effort as you can imagine, so I think they've just decided on splitting SACs up into separate components. I think the biggest issue with SACs in my school is consistency. Different classes seem to be marked in different ways. But what can you do :P

Haha consistency :')

As an added safety measure at our school when it comes to "collaboration", if you have a SAC for Maths subject and you're absent on the day regardless if it's a legitimate issue or not then you'll have to sit an oral examination to explain your answers and all to a Maths teacher in case you "cheated." Likewise in English each class gets different prompts to ensure fairness (however I cannot tell if for English if it's fair or not as some topics are better than others)...

Standard you walk past is the standard accept. If you think your colleagues are acting morally wrong, speak out. Those students will get a nasty shock in the future if they continue like this too (where the punishment is much more severe).

Make sure to keep it anonymous though.

Thanks for the input guys. Me and my friends in class became aware of this, and we plan to tell the teacher once the results of the SAC are returned. It's more than likely that that group of people who cheated would have got insanely high scores compared to the rest of us, so it's pretty f*cking annoying. I put in so much effort for that SAC, and if people who didn't study manage to get higher than me, I'll be pissed. I'd imagine you'd all feel the same.

In Unit 3, I was rank 1 because all the SACs were done at the same time and there was no possibility of manipulating the system. Now, I'd be lucky to be in the top 10 thanks to this.

So, i guess it's only a problem if they have a higher rank than you because they will fuck up your SAC mark due to statistical moderation, assuming they do bad in the exam. If this is the case, I STRONGLY recommend telling the teacher because this will greatly affect your studyscore/ATAR.

This worries me greatly.

Anyway, here's a short story on what exactly happened.

It was for physics, specifically the electric power component of the course. The SAC itself was supposed to be a "summary of prac. reports", but in reality it was just a test.

Anyway, when discussing answers after the SAC with friends (as you do), I heard that group x in my class had received photos of the SAC before they did it. Note that we didn't do the SAC at the same time. I talked to a friend in another class, and he says that he saw someone (that was friends with group x) with their phone out and his SAC sheet on his lap. Putting two-and-two together, we realised that he had sent the picture of the SAC to his mates.

Not that bad right? It's not like they can remember the entire SAC? It's not like they can bring a CAS with all the answers in it?

Wrong.

In this SAC, we were allowed to bring in "summary reports" of each individual prac. that we did. So they chucked all the answers on those sheets and guaranteed themselves high marks. When I was doing the SAC itself, I looked up at the half-way mark and saw group x with their pens down and making faces with eachother. It was a long and somewhat difficult SAC, no way they could have completed it that quickly.

TL; DR - people in my class received picture of SAC beforehand and brought answers in with them.

I don't actually know how to approach this. What do you guys suggest I say to the teacher?

Hey there mate, sorry to hijack your thread but I thought I'd chime in with my own 2 cents.

Last year, me and some friends found ourselves in the exact same situation. Different details, but exact same situation. Or whole group went to our unit coordinator and told her what happened. As far as I know, the unit coordinator told her teacher and the head, and I'm not really sure what happened after that. Who knows if it ever really got resolved but she did shit anyway, so I guess that's karma for you :')

But as for your situation, I say tell your head. I wouldn't bother with your teacher tbh, I'd just go straight to the person in charge. For me, this was my unit coordinator. It helped that we were all comfortable with her and she knew us, so she knew we weren't lying or doing anything underhand. Besides, it's a lot better for your teacher to hear it from a colleague rather than a student, especially if you have no proof of what happened. At least that way, you can't be accused of lying or anything else. Better to keep the drama as low key as possible I learned. Hope this helps !

wouldn't your cohort have to redo all the SACs if that were the case?

This happened at my school this year haha.

Omg as if :o
I was so sick on the day of one of my SACs but still turned up and now it badly affects my ranking :(
(I know being sick is not an excuse but still...)

This happens at my school too and it could be unfair but then again I guess they do it to minimize cheating and who knows anything could come up on the exam anyway.

In other subjects we get the same SAC but sit it at different times because that's when we have class. It's kinda dodge because we could easily just ask our friends to tell us what was on the SAC (not that most people'd be willing to share) but I think the teachers just trust us not to and yeah.
