Hey ☺

With questions like that you would state the determinant eg physical activity then in brackets put the category eg (behavioral) then go onto to discuss how this affects the group.
Also remember to discuss the difference and not just say “males have higher rates of CVD” say “males have a higher rate of CVD compared to women”. This sounds obvious but apparently lots of people don’t do this.  ☺
Do you have a specific question, because I realize this explanation probably isn’t the best. ☺

Yep :)
Hey Smiley :)

If you're not busy, could you please answer some of my questions that I have on my thread.

Thanks, I need help :D

Can I dot-point my answers in a short answer question in a health SAC? Or will I lose marks?

Am i able to learn one health promotion program which covers 3 NHPA's? Or must i learn one each?

For example: "Swap it don't stop it" can cover CVD, Diabetes and Obesity

Thanks :) :)

You can definitely do that, and teacher's usually encourage it, haha :)

Swap It, Don't Stop It was always my go-to for those three, but also the Heart Foundation's 'Pick the Tick' was one we had to learn for another part of the study design anyway, so I tended to use it for CVD.

If you find programs that can apply to mroe than one NHPA, go for it and make it easier for yourself, as long as the link is reasonable. Like for Swap It, Don't Stop it, it's great for those three NHPAs, but I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable using it for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions, since it's not exactly direct :P

And also, you can totally make up some crap if you're desperate in the exam and it's a random NHPA you didn't focus on, as long as it sounds reasonable :)

Guys I only doubled with Arts because I couldn't let go of Psych and wanted to keep doing it as a major at least, but I took International Studies on a whim after the info session just because I needed a minor, and I love it so much! It's 3:29am and I had to share this, I think I'm majoring in it bye.

Hey guys, I'm planning to learn one health promotion program in depth for each NHPA. Will I be safe for the exam? Or should I learn a couple more?

Thanks

We have gotten told to only learn 1 program for each NHPA. I highly doubt that they will ask more than that on the exam

Yeah, you'll never need to know more than one program for each NHPA - even one each isn't necessary, as some work for a few of them :)

Would protein be a protective or risk nutrient for osteoporosis?

Protein forms an important component of bones and can slightly reduce bone loss however, excess protein intake can increase the loss of calcium from bones, which increases the risk of osteoporosis.

????? :) Thanks.

Hmm, they usually wouldn't ask something this complicated - usually with these questions, it's gonna be obvious right away how something affects something.

BUT if I got it and it asked which one, I would write protective factor. Then this type of question I'm pretty sure would give a few lines to actually explain it, so I would say what you said, and then add that it can also be a risk factor :)

Also have another question.

Explain the role of nutrition in addressing cardiovascular health? How would i answer this..? Would i talk about each protective/risk nutrient? :|

Usually Qs with the "role of nutrition" term require you to talk about a risk and protective nutrient :) It's also dependent on the mark allocation (if a role of nutrition Q is worth 4 marks, it would be best to talk about both). Discussing the role of nutrition in regards to Cardiovascular Health involves talking about the effect that risk nutrients (i.e. saturated/trans fats -> LDL cholesterol, sodium, alcohol) as well as protective nutrients (poly/monounsaturated fats -> HDL cholesterol, fibre, water) have on the functioning of arteries, blood vessels and general heart function and how these nutrients may increase/decrease the risk of getting CVDs or CVD-related conditions (e.g. high sodium intake's relationship to hypertension, fibre's ability to protect against CHD and heart attacks by helping to remove build-up of plaque which may lead to blocked arteries i.e. atherosclerosis) :) Linking it to a disease/health condition may not always be essential but try to make the link wherever possible as it can enhance your answer :D

It's probably best to leave dot point form answers to just the "identify" or "list" type of Qs :) E.g. for a Q like "list two values of the Australian Health System" you could list the answers as dot points as it's basically single-word answers. For longer answers, try to write a full answer because sometimes you won't have enough line space to actually write out extensive answers in dot point form :( Also, sometimes writing in dot point form can somewhat take away from the flow of your answer and from what I know dot points aren't extremely encouraged by most teachers so best to just practice writing full answers :)

Need some help here;

1) Why is cardiovascular health an NHPA, provide evidence;

Contributes significantly to the burden of disease of Australia's health system. (evidence) -> In 2010, cardiovascular disease accounted for 42% of all deaths. <- is this appropriate evidence?

2) Give a description of cardiovascular health (3 marks)

this is how my teacher likes it;

Cardiovascular health refers the the health and functioning of the heart and blood vessels of an individual. Poor cardiovascular health can result in diseases like coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. Coronary hearth disease is the reduced blood flow to the heart, due to fat deposits in the blood vessels. Therefore, the heart has to work harder to pump blood which increases risk of stroke. Peripheral vascular disease is where low amounts of blood can get to specific parts of the body. This is due to vessels being to narrow, and makes specific muscles in the body numb as less oxygen can get through.

Am I on the right track?

thanks

In those types of questions do you have to say both a protective and risk nutrient? Or could you say two risk nutrients or two protective nutrients?

Mentioning one risk and one protective would make for a more balanced answer - that's why it's preferable to do it that way :) But if you can only remember two risk/two protective, then just write them down - you should still get the mark :)
