My turn:

Explain one of the WHO agendas (2 marks) And then provide an example on how your chosen agenda can impact a developing country and improve global health (2 marks)
2013-2014:| VCE
2015-2018:| Bachelor of Science (Neuroscience) @ UoM
2019-X:| Doctor of Dental Surgery (discontinued)
2019 -2021:| Master of Physiotherapy

Currently: Physiotherapist working at a musculoskeletal clinic. Back pain, sore neck, headaches or any other pain limiting your study? Give me a PM (although please do see your personal health professional first!)

Any questions related to pathways towards studying dentistry or physiotherapy? Gimmi a PM!

- polyunsaturated fats: these decrease the impact of impaired glucose regulation, thus assisting individuals to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus
- fibre: High fibre foods tend to have a lower glyaecemic index, thus assisting in addressing diabetes by ensuring that insulin is released slowly from the pancreas.
- water: increases feelings of satiety. This may prevent overeating, which can help individuals maintain a healthy weight which is a protective factor for diabetes.

To be fair, you can't actually be asked about GI foods anymore
Would we have to know how polyunsaturated fats decrease the impact of impaired glucose regulation?

My turn:

Fostering health security: Is about reducing disease spread, the UN monitors and addresses threats to global health and encourages the development of country policies that reduce the risk of disease outbreak. Immunisations are one way the UN fosters health security. If developing countries are immunised against common diseases such as the measles or tuberculosis, it will reduce the risk of communities getting infected and thus contribute to lower global mortality and morbidity rates due to vaccine preventable diseases. Lower mortality rates increase life expectancy on a global scale.

In Australia, individuals have access to adequate housing. This, in contrast to developing countries, whom often have inadequate housing, for example housing without chimneys and etched roofs. Both these factors reduce ventilation within home, and this increases the risk of respiratory conditions such as asthma. Hence, the level of health status within developing countries is negatively impacted.

Do you think we'd be able to answer with something they've already done? e.g. HLP.

Nutrition Australia: can implement a mass media campaign and advertise the importance of eating a balanced diet with an abundance of fruit and vegetables via print, radio and tv advertisements. The campaign could educate people which food groups to consume on a regular basis and thus empower Australian's to make better choices and promote healthier eating.

Would we need 3 different ways? (e.g. cookbook, HLP, factsheets)

explain the role of NGOs in Australia in promoting global health and shd (5 marks)

I havn't heard that they do with Polyunsaturated fats
Omega-6 fats help to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fats have a role in regulating blood pressure and blood clotting and assist in brain function.

That is fine. For a 3 mark question you would get 1 mark for naming the NGO and two marks for explaining what they do.

So I got a PM asking about my predictions for the exam.

My advice is to obviously study everything but this was actually something that I spoke with a few students and a teacher about, although we could be totally wrong here are my predictions. (These are pretty much just the topics that havn't been covered in the most recent study design yet and topics that were done poorly)

I was actually pretty good with prediction the topics on lasts years exam so let's see how I go!

Unit 3

Health-The actual definition of health, physical or social health.
Health status- Life Expectancy and HALE differences.
Determinants-they havn't yet asked about actual definitions for the determinants but these have been number of practice exams and sacs.
Health Status of Australians compared with other developed countries including Sweden, United States of America, United Kingdom and Japan.   (Key Skill – Analyse data about the health status of Australia’s population and that of other developed countries  is yet to be tested

For health status between different groups males and females are the only population group that has not be tested yet.

For the NHPAs the newest one is dementia so that would be my guess but Arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions. injury prevention and control, mental health and obesity also have not been covered.
Questions about food sources and nutrients are always answered poorly

Federal and State Governments questions have been answered poorly but local government has not been tested yet.

How a program relates to Vichealths missions was done poorly last year.
Definitions for each of the models of health are very possible.

Very little marks are usually scored on the questions that ask for areas of the social model of health and the ottawa charter. This surprises me but anyway.
values of the health care system have been done very poorly in the past, same with medicare and the PBS.
dietary guidelines could assist in promoting healthy eating was done poorly last year.

Unit 4
HDI was done poorly last year

With the dot point -The influence of Income, Gender Equality, Peace, Education, Health Care, Political Stability, Global Marketing and  the Physical Environment on Health Status of Developing countries and Australia

peace and Physical Environment have not been covered.

UN’s Millennium Development goals - 1. 2 and 3 have not been specifically asked about yet.

With aid-humanitarian aid is the only aid not examined yet.
objectives of AusAID were done poorly so maybe except questions about DFAT

In the Role of the UN in providing global health and sustainable human development through the following action areas; world peace and security, human rights, humanitarian assistance and social and economic development last year there was a question about  world peace and security but nothing else has ever come up, so human rights, humanitarian assistance and social and economic development are good bets. This section was also done poorly last year .

Ways to Ensure Sustainability of Programs, including elements of Appropriateness, Affordability, Equity  has appeared in all papers and is likely to continue.

With programs there have been questions on food security, HIV/AIDS and malaria, safe water but not on any of the others yet!

Unless you can link this function to diabetes, I wouldn't

Discuss the role the physical environment can play in achieving sustainable human development (6 marks)

Since housing has already been done above, I'll use a different example/s.

Through having access to safe water, this decreases the risk of contracting a water borne disease such as typhoid or cholera therefore improving physical health. If an individual is healthy they are able to pursue meaningful employment, gain a decent income to afford housing, food and essential medications therefore improving decent standard of living (human development.) Through employment, income tax revenue increases, improving a region's gross national income per capita and allowing more money to be put back into the community in the form of sustainable infrastructure like hospitals therefore ensuring economic sustainability.

Having access to water through piping means that children are able to go to school instead of fetching water over long distances, which can result in learning literacy skills to understand health safety practices, such as washing hands, to reduce risk of communicable diseases and improve physical health. Being healthy allows children to focus in class and gain capabilities and improve their knowledge. This newly gained knowledge can be passed onto future generations, ensuring social sustainability.

I'd give two examples then explain the influence on SHD.

Work Environment
A positive work environment that encourages regular physical activity through sporting activities, provides employees with an opportunity to maintain an ideal weight which improves the physical health of individuals, especially those with jobs that are mostly sedentary. This also encourages individuals to develop to their full potential when working as they feel more positive about themselves in their own environment. Moreover this allows individuals to work more efficiently and effective thus allowing economical growth of the country which increases the capacity of future generations to earn an income.

Housing
A positive house environment that isn't overcrowded or in need of major repair or replacement reduces the stress and anxiety felt by family members, knowing that they aren't vulnerable to injuries and mental health problems. An appropriate house environment that protects individuals from the extremities of the weather provides individuals access to a decent standard of living which helps them lead productive and creative lives towards their needs and interest. Moreover the house environment can be utilized and preserved in a way that provides future generations of children with a home.

______

What are the three dimensions of HDI and the four indicators?

Hi all, I just wanted to quickly clarify something

Let's use an example: food security
Apparently if a question asks for interrelationships (6 marks) you talk about how food secutiy impacts on health, then how that impacts on human development, then sustainability then health again.
But if it asks for sustainable human development (6 marks).. you talk about how food security impacts on health, how food security impacts on hd, how food security impacts on sustainability

is that correct? :/

Sustainable human development is code for the inter relationships between health, human development and sustainability. As long as each link is a flow on effect from the previous and you address health, human development and sustainability, it doesn't matter what order it goes in or how you link things together (e.g. I could link health with sustainability and then go to HD)

To my knowledge
When it says interrelationships of SHD you link health ->human development -> sustainability so it can basically head off to a tangent and you could talk about something completely opposite to food security

When it just say SHD, you have to reference food security to health, human development and sustainability
