It's weird how I got a lower raw score than a girl last year, but I actually beat her after scaling. Makes my puny 40 feel special :)

Since the Scaling Report rounds to the nearest integer, 40 Methods this year scaled to exactly 46.53 (source from my mates who got 40) :)

Question because no one else seems to know - I did methods 3/4 this year in year 11. Do I get the scaled score from this year as part of my ATAR next year, or is it scaled by next years scaling? Or is the highest of the two taken.
Scaled score from this year.

No.

You are scaled by the year you completed the subject in. Take my 48 for example, I don't get 50+ scaled, rather I get 49.33 using last year's cohort. Otherwise I guess it would be "unfair"
2012:  Methods [48] Physics [49]
2013:  English [40] (oops) Chemistry [46] Spesh [42] Indo SL [34] Uni Maths: Melb UMEP [4.5] Monash MUEP [just for a bit of fun]
2014:  BAeroEng/BComm

Isn't this the same thing that REBORN said?

- Scaling has nothing to do with the difficulty of the exam or the curriculum. It has to do with the strength of the cohort.

- Methods scaled so much this year because it hit the VTAC trigger for scaling over 50, which automatically brings everything up along with it. That trigger is: where is the mean of the scaled distribution, and is its standard deviation. Both are available here for each subject.

- In 2010, it was 49.7, and in 2011 it was 49.1. The main difference this year has been the abnormally large (8.5), signifying that there is a much higher variation in Methods students' achievement in their other subjects (as measured by their scaled scores in their other subjects) this year than previous years.

What would a 36 scale to?? I didn't perform as well as I would have hoped to in the exams but I'm happy with what I got considering the circumstances - especially since the scaling is so good!

Hi I'm starting methods next year for year 11, any advice? How hard would it be if I averaged about a 70 in maths this year (I'm in year 10)

Hey there, welcome to AN!
Its hard to say based on scores how you'll find methods as the scores are all relative to the difficulty that your school sets for assessments. (Hopefully that made grammatical sense...) Your school might set easier assessment compared to the state or very difficult assessment.

One thing I can say about methods is that it requires hard work. This thread is about methods scaling a ridiculous amount this year, and that is for a reason. Try your best to stay on top of the work and if you have problems with concepts, ask someone until you understand. Also set yourself a goal to work for, or else you might have trouble finding motivation.. to work.
Good luck =)

Scales to around a 44-45 I'd say around a 44.6.
I wouldn't recommend repeating Methods imo. Repeating a subject is going to be boring as hell for you and its really not that enjoyable.

However, if you really want to, it is your decision to make. I wish you luck for this year. Hopefully the exam won't be as bad  :)

ehh my bet would be 45.

I don't think it would hurt repeating as you already did 3 3/4s in Yr 11.. (great scores btw  ;D)
If you were to repeat it again... are you confident that you are going to score higher? If you can push methods into your bottom 2.... (by the look of your other 2 scores, I think it would be quite easy..) it won't matter that much. You also can't guarantee that this years scaling will be as high as 2013....
IF you don't repeat it... I guess you have 3 subjects only you fill have soo many frees  and a lot of time to try ace them.... (esp english as its super important)

It's your decision in the end. I don't think you can go wrong with whatever option you go with.
