Hey guys so I've got a question from the 2009 VCAA exam, the answer says Privacy Act 1998 whereas I put down Information Privacy Act 2000. Is the reason why it's Privacy Act 1998 because the question doesn't involve government and hence is not fully relational to the Information Privacy Act 2000?

I don't know how, or if you even can, attach pictures here so here's the image on imgur (Image removed from quote.)

Yep, the Privacy Act 1998 only applies to:
- Federal government departments and ACT agencies
-Private organisations: that turnover at least $3 million per year, or hold information regarding an individuals' health, or buy or sell personal information for profit (e.g. Facebook), or  are contracted to a service to the common wealth.

This guy doesn't work for the state (is a small second-hand car dealer, private business) , and he has an annual turnover of $3 million, hence he must adhere to the Privacy Act 1988.

Additionally, just to clarify further:
The Information Privacy Act 2000 applies only to Victorian state government departments or organisations, NOT to private businesses.

Hope that makes sense.  :)

Also another question, could someone please differentiate between Layout Diagrams, Mock-ups and Story Boards?

Thanks

Story board: focuses more on the relationship between pages of a website, and the navigation. Also somewhat summaries what each pages consists of and how it helps fulfil the needs of the client. A more detailed layout diagram will have the name of the webpage, client; the name and size of each file on the webpage (e.g. a picture).

By VCAA definition, there is no distinct difference between the two, however, a for a better understanding:
Layout diagrams: primarily focus on the position of objects in a solution rather than its actual appearance.
Mockups: are photorealistic, show exactly what the final solution will appear like. Contain the type, colour, size of font. Basically, they're very detailed.

Also, if you don't already know about this, vceit.com is pretty helpful for IT students. :)

Is there a difference between an ERD and a flowchart? It doesn't seem clear in any of my notes.

Cheers,

Cheers,

ERDs show relationships between primary keys in a data base.
Flowcharts show the processing of a function.

Do we need to know the 10 provisions and principles for the Privacy Act 1988, and the 11 additional privacy principles for the IPA 2000 and Health Records 2001?

Thanks!

What is the best way to explain how design elements are used to influence the appearance or improve the functionality of websites? Particularly when referring to proportion, orientation, navigation, appropriateness/relevance and structure.

These types of questions seem to appear every year and I am consistently having trouble answering them correctly.

It's better to be familiar with them imo, because the study design does cover these acts and the provisions fall under these legislations. There have also been questions in past exams relating to the provision indirectly.

Check out question 8b, I think that's what you're looking for:

Just want to point out that an ERD shows relationships between entities/objects, not just the primary keys. A primary key is essentially just a unique identifier for each instance in that entity. Hence why it is called an entity relationship diagram. Entity referring to the object (Person, Car, Customer...)

^Thank you for adding that bit of information!

Also, does anyone know how important it is to know about mediums such as coaxial wires, UTP, fibre optic etc? I do have a gist of them, but is knowing their transmission speed, length and the specifics important?
Thanks!

Quick question,

When asked to design something like the poll on the 2014 examination, do we have to draw how it is going to look (Like Mark Kelly's response: http://vceit.com/p/postmortem-2014i.htm) or just text referring to what am I going to put? (What's shown on the examination report: "Textbox for comments" etc.)

(I can't seem to upload to photos  :()

Thanks!

Hi I also have some questions :)

Could someone please explain user acceptance testing to me? As well as functionality and usability testing?

And for collective identities, apart from a logo, what else helps to build it?

Thanks :)

You'll need to know very little about wired/wireless communications. There's only one key knowledge point relating to them, and you should refer to the Glossary Terms which tells exactly which wired/wireless communication mediums to focus on.
Wired:
Fibre optic
Twisted Pair
Wireless:
Satellite
Microwave
Infra Red
Radio

Having an idea of where each is used and why it is the right choice for that environment would be sufficient.

User acceptance testing happens during the development stage of the PSM (during testing) but involves a typical user of the software.
e.g. if you were designing new cash registers for Woolworths, you would gather a sample of common users (think 15-19 year old males/females who currently work at Woolworths) and you'd have them use the software and provide feedback.

As they're not software developers, they'd be able to give you (a software developer) some insight into improvements that can be made prior to implementing the changes.

Functionality/Usability testing is not something specified in the study design. Know testing in general. Know what makes good Test Data and know the procedures for testing.

Collective identity - Logo, representative colours, photos of the members at club events, reviews of club events, photos supplied by members.

Cheers Acid and Aaron. So do flowcharts and ERDs look the same when expressed as a diagram? I know that ERDs have attributes (squares), relationships (diamonds) and entities (ovals) but what do flowcharts look like?

Also another question. Question 2 on the 2014 exam seems a bit strange:
"A chat site was initially created for intranet use in a small company. The company has now decided to have an open section with internet access and add a multimedia option so that users can post videos and audio files. Explain how these two actions will affect accessibility". (4marks)

The way I understand accessibility is that it tests whether the website is able to be used by the intended users (special needs or technical access). I suppose you could mention that the audio files assist blind people's accessibility, but how would explain the open section with internet access? Surely the intended users could already access the site as they are the employees with access to the intranet... Not sure about this one.
