For Mod C People and Politics I'm doing Brave New World and the film snowpiercer.

The rubric asks us to talk about how the medium of the text affects meaning but how exactly would I do that in my essay?
How does the fact that BNW is a novel or that Snowpiercer is a film add/affect the meaning?

The medium affects the techniques the composer can utilise!! That's how I'd approach it ;D

Hi there,
For AOS,
I mainly focus on one rubric point in my thesis, but bring in some others in the beginning of each topic sentence for my body paragraphs. Do you recommend I add another reference to a rubric point in my thesis to create greater depth, or is just the one okay?

I think just the one is okay! You could always tie in a second to adjust to the question in front of you if you needed to ;D

Hi there, how do you effectively keep your stimulus flowing your creative writing thank you.

This guide could be helpful :)

This is one of my points from my mod c essay on this text https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/qed/2017/05/trump-russia-neverending-beatup/
ultimately this module is about representation correct? My teacher thinks I should focus more on politicians rather than the media because of they way the question is worded (but I want to link more to the module and not just to the question....A big mistake I made in Mod A  :P)

Yep, Module C is about how techniques create meaning - Representation. I slightly agree with your teacher, I don't think a discussion of media is quite a discussion of politics, but I think a lot of it would carry over to a broader discussion of public information/manipulation!

Quote
also i'm going into the exam with these 2 ideas/theses (not perfect....going to adapt according to the question)
how the media communicates a certain idea about politics which may be untrue or superficial
or
how political representations of events are manipulated by politicians to alter the public's perceptions as they are driven by a constant pursuit to maintain or gain greater power. The media is used as a vehicle to achieve this.....

Again, I think focusing on the media is perhaps going to muddy your arguments a little - Perhaps take the same ideas and apply them to how the public is fed information more generally? Just my thoughts, take or leave :)

Hi! This is probably a silly question but if we are given an extract to analyse/refer to, should we directly to it in a more self-aware manner? ie. "In the given extract, it can be seen that..." or write as if we were not asked to specifically reference it, ie "from the quote [insert quite here] it can be see that...
Sorry if that's confusing, thanks!

I've always gone the more subtle route, but I've actually never read anything definitive on this!! Of course it needs to be referenced...

I'm also confused as to how we would best integrate the extract into the essays, so I would also appreciate some help!
Just going a bit further, is it necessary to mention the extracts in each paragraph, or would it be sufficient to extract the themes in the introduction and then just analyse those themes throughout the body paragraphs.

... and doing it in every paragraph is the easiest way to guarantee that it is properly integrated - I would normally link to it in every conclusion ;D

Hi!
I just wanted to ask what are the chances that they'll specify a poem for module c? (I'm doing people and politics and auden's poetry, 7 poems!)
I'm aware that until now they've only asked one general question for the whole module in the hsc...but is there a chance they'll specify?

Pretty sure there is zero chance of this! :)

Quote
Also, what is the chance they'll ask for 2 related texts for module c?

Just wanted to make sure!! Thanks for any help  :)

And a very low chance of this ;D

Hey Jamon,
How do we talk about the different interpretations of speeches? And also the time and place, do we basically make it more of a context driven essay?

Hey I'm not sure if someone has already answered this, but I was wondering what advice there was on integrating a stimulus into your creative for the AOS, and how significantly this integration of stimulus contributes to your overall creative mark?

Thanks :)

Hey Jamon,
How do we talk about the different interpretations of speeches? And also the time and place, do we basically make it more of a context driven essay?

It's not a context driven essay like Module A, but you can definitely talk about how well the speech was received at the time by various audiences, and then compare that with its reception today. This plays into the idea of the 'effectiveness' of the text and its textual integrity, how well it communicates to its various audiences. But it shouldn't be quite the focus, it should come into your paragraphs on occasion ;D

Hi! :)

I have a question about Elyse & Emily's English Advanced Course notes book thing.

It says to use "pre-reading time" (page 91) to look at the exam questions while the exam supervisors are getting ready.

I thought you weren't allowed to open the paper until reading time starts? Or is this not what it means? Could someone please clear this up for me, thank you :)

My Module B Trial question was "Resounding speeches are those which strike a chord with the audience" - to what extent does this perspective align with your own personal understanding of your speeches.
I structured my essay using techniques - e.g. Keating uses blunt tone that earns him credibility with Indigenous Australians as he admits guilt
Whereas Lessing uses emotional pleas and hopeful tone etc.

Is this not an ideal response? My marker wrote "using techniques to drive your discussion limits your engagement" - should I rather have talked about how the themes of the speeches are relevant to the audience etc?

Hey guys,
can someone pls tell me how i can relate this paragraph to discoveries being confronting and provocative
This is similarly explored within Ulysses, wherein discovery is present as a fundamental aspect of human nature. Tennyson was heavily influenced by Victorian ideals in his interpretation of Odysseus as his thirst for discovery reflects the expansionist policies of colonisers during the age of discovery. Therefore, he utilises the pleasurable metaphors of possessing a “hungry heart” and finding “drunk delight” in new discoveries. The alliteration of these metaphors are aesthetic devices to present discovery as inescapable. This fundamental desire for discovery is influenced by the hubristic themes and ideas explored by the Dante’s interpretation of Odysseus who was trapped in hell for extending his pursuit of knowledge too far. Odysseus neglection of his relationship and responsibilities to those around him is emphasized in the neglection of his relationships and responsibilities to those around him is emphasised in the reductive language and polysyndeton of a “savage race” that “hoard and sleep and know not me”. It suggests Odysseus disillusionment with the mundanity of ruling has created a limited scope of discovery, as he fails to utilise the opportunity to discover his relationship with those around him.
thanks

Hey everyone,
For those who do Hamlet, I'd appreciate a little help =)
“Witness this army of such mass and charge
Led by a delicate and tender prince,
Whose spirit with divine ambition puff'd
Makes mouths at the invisible event,
Exposing what is mortal and unsure
To all that fortune, death and danger dare,
Even for an egg-shell. Rightly to be great
Is not to stir without great argument,
But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
When honour's at the stake.”

With reference to the above extract, discuss how imagery is an integral part of Hamlet.

I'm not exactly sure how to answer this by referring to the extract. What key ideas should you aim to talk about in your body paragraphs. My prepared essay was on corruption, revenge, and philosophical dilemmas regarding the afterlife. But I don't feel like they apply to the question very well.
Thanks in advance =)

I feel like that extract is explaining the value in acting rather than procrastinating, which can maybe link into Hamlet's inability to seek revenge. Bit of a stretch but following that maybe link corruption to the revenge, and link the afterlife point to the fact Fortinbras is not afraid of death and is willingly exposing his army to it.
This is a tricky one though so I'm not 100% sure if those suggestions will work but maybe you can try and see what happens

Hey, I'm not really sure which thread to post my area of study questions but with the creative peice I feel like my best works have either come from a time of distress that is quite personal to me or deals with a subject matter I don't personally understand and am worried about it being inaccurate or stereotypical. Do you think I could still work with these ideas or should I create somthing that is from experience yet more distant from my own life?

Some questions for the AOS Reading Task:
1. Does 1 mark necessarily correlate to 1 technique + quote?
2. Do we need topic sentences for all questions?
TIA.

1. Yes if it includes analysis and link to discovery ;)
2. Nah you can just start to answer the question for most i.e. for the 2,3,4 markers, just start by saying "the repetition of the quote [insert quote] " and you will be fine. however for the last question, you need to do a one page essay with intro, body, conclusion :)
