Just thought I'd add that VCE results don't seem to correspond for students selected in the science olympiads.
The only team that's been notified so far is biology - one of the students selected had an amazing score in VCE biology, the other had mid-low 40s. Can't comment on the relationship between VCE and physics/chemistry selection, as that hasn't been released yet.
Perhaps VCE just doesn't have any relevance to anything...
Someone from my school who went to biology olympiad school got a full score in Bio last year :) Olympiads are more like problem-solving, they involve MUCH more thought, manipulation and ingenuity than VCE maths where what you have to do is basically set.

It's such a shame she didn't get in... she's so nice, and she just missed out!

I just thought I'd bring my science olympiad background into this thread to illustrate the vast difference between olympiad and school. There's not actually a section on science olympiads here, as I think I'm the only regular user (although I know of one who goes on when I make him) who's actually involved in olympiads here...

LOL, am I thinking what you're thinking? ;)
I really want to try Phys and Chem Olympiads this year, but the chance of getting in is extremely low :(

I told you, physics still doesn't know. Not looking forward to the phonecall anyway...

You may as well try. Pfft, if I can qualify for chemistry and physics, you can too :)

I'm already planning a massive food binge with S after we both find out to block the pain.

*sigh*

It'd be awesome if S got into chemistry and if I got into physics, but Pr(that) is quiteee small. The biology team was surprising, so the physics and chemistry ones probably will be too.

Don't put yourself down, if you've done more than the other victorians (like you said), then you have a good chance.

Just because I answered almost all of the paper doesn't mean I actually got it right.

And yes, this shall end this off topic ramble :)

I know a person who was number one for the BHP Maths Comp and is representing Australia in the Maths Olympiad yet he only got 40 for spec and under 40 for methods. VCE doesn't necessarily measure your Maths ability, but your studying ability.
