Similar triangles is assumed knowledge dating back to year 10... and if you used Essentials, there are questions with regards to similar triangles in the examples+exercises.
using similar triangles is the easy part
, but the hard part about that question was recognizing the fact that you need to use similar triangles and manipulating the equation into a correct format (replacing h with 5-h)

true, but for those who are doing specialist I think similar triangles in related rates is very common :P

Agreed.
But, another way you could have done it, was to recognise that the relationship between h and r was linear, and then work it out that way....

yup was replying to initialdrulz lol maybe shudda quoted

i agree it was a bit harsh of them to put a similar triangles q in, but it does separate the top tier which is what vcaa wants.

for question 2b, I think the answer is p=1/2

(the question wanted the value of P rather than the integral)

To be honest...I kinda enjoyed it lol, better than those other ones, (matrices one (weirdest numbers), differentiate then find area etc.)

There could be kids out there who know every explicit thing on the study design inside and out, and then got stuck on that question.
They could have at least given a harder question which actually had to do with 3/4 methods rather than try and stuff up people with a geometry question.

I agree.  Why not have inverse matrices/multiplying matrices or something.  You can still have separating questions that will separate the best from the rest without going outside the study design...
