got another question,

probably not a big deal for a lot of people over there because you probably have heaps to keep busy butt i watch heaps of tv and need my weekly fix of shows like prison break and stuff :P so my question is, since it's not going to be feasible downloading those shows weekly because ill be racking up a huge bill with the anu charges...are there any 'free spots' at campus where i can get those downloads done or is my only other option to sign up with a wireless broadband provider?
There used to be a downloading network between all the colleges at ANU, but it got shut down by some Australian piracy watchdog earlier this year :(

But anyway, some people go home over the weekend and download new shows, so they bring them back to college and you get it off them by putting it on an external hard drive.
You can also download using college internet credit (you buy however much you want - 1c/mb, so probably $3-7 an episode of a TV show, depending on its file size). Not particularly feasible. You can use wireless, but ANU get shitting if you go on epic downloading sprees using wireless. And yeah, you get 10mb a day internet quota from ANU, but it's not really feasible to use that to download much...
There are TVs at colleges too, so you can watch stuff there, but obviously only when it comes out in Australia.
Wireless broadband provider sounds kinda pricey and complicated to me.

Anyway, I'm heading back to Melbourne today and plan to get some uberdownloading on when I get home due to free internet (well, free in that I don't have to pay for it).

hmm i guess im going to have to wait until i get back home/befriend people who get the downloading done ASAP :P (if im going)
with the wireless thing, that's not free is it? like it is (i think) at Monash/Melb uni etc
also im a bit confused with the quota stuff, if ANU gives us 10mb to use a day...is that counted in the amount of internet you use at your college? hope that made sense..

im definitely thinking of taking a tv if im going, hopefully ill get a ps3 by the end of this year...ill need a tv to play that :P

and one more question, i really want to get into bruce, sounds the best of the lot. i haven't had the time to apply yet tho, am i going to be disadvantaged, in terms of getting in there, because ive kinda left it this late (even though the closing date is still ages away)?
Wireless is free, but ANU monitors it so to ensure that people aren't downloading stuff like crazy. 10mb is ANU's quota - you can use that on ANU computers in computer labs and stuff. College internet credit you have to pay for, and you use it on your own computer in your room.

I think I applied for accommodation quite late, didn't seem to matter too much. But I probably got straight in to Bruce because my sister used to go there, and I got a good ENTER. Basically, applying whenever shouldn't make much of a difference, but make sure your application talks yourself up a lot - at Bruce last year, there were 7 first preferences for every available room or something ridiculous like that.

ah okay, would you by any chance know what their definition of downloading like crazy is? would i be able to get away with say downloading a 350 mb file once a week? and maybe the odd music album once a fortnight or something?
also, are they able to monitor the actual activities you're undertaking on your laptops? using rapidshare/torrents would get me in hot water if they could :(

hmm alright, ill do it once my exams are done then. is it possible to get away with fibbing though, as a means of talking yourself up? :P cuz theres not really much to say besides doing work experience/community work...which pretty much everyone does at school anyway

I'm pretty sure you need references to apply for Bruce, so try not to lie too much.

Oh? I thought you only needed references for Burgmann and Johns...

Yeah, you only need references for Burmanns and Johns.

No idea what downloading like crazy is, but I imagine that 350mb a week would be too much... To be honest, you'd be able to get what you need from other people at college most of the time.

As for fibbing - no idea. The Dean at Bruce likes "quirky" people, for some odd reason. But keep it real, I suppose.

Sorry, I thought is was Burgmann and Bruce for some reason, maybe because Johns is filled with rich bogans and I figured that the screening process would be minimal.

Anyway, invest in an external harddrive (if you haven't already) or else your computer might run out of space pretty quickly (with people sharing their stuff), plus increased portability is a good thing.

It'd have the same opportunities as a Comm/Arts course elsewhere, except it'd be slightly higher regarded, I suppose.

http://www.woroni.com.au/article/251/The-problem-of-synthesis

k this article was posted in the general vce section, and i didnt want to divert the topic in which it was posted so ill ask my questions on it over here..

i might be wrong but, from what i gathered from that article it said that in terms of undergrad degrees, ANU isn't really all that good ...well atleast not as much as it's #16 ranking suggests it should be. was i right in interpreting that from the article?

Pretty much. It's not saying it's bad, it's just saying that people who go on about ANU being the best uni in Australia and all that have to bear in mind that the rankings are highly influenced by ANU's undisputed position as the best research university in Australia. This makes up for its undergraduate degrees, which, though highly regarded, are not at the same level as its postgrad degrees.

Is ANU the best university in Australia then for an undergraduate? Probably not. Is it one of the top 5? Definitely. Top 3? Yeah, probably. How do you measure its position exactly? No idea. ANU's undergrad degrees certainly are on par with other group of 8 degrees, in any cases.

My main reason for placing it first is simple: it is NOT Melbourne and does not have the Melbourne model
and the arts faculty looks great
