^ to your last question with sections&timing refer to here
http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/images/infobook/UMAT_InfoBook.pdf

well i'm quite sure there is no exact figure to how many people sit the exam.
but it is roughly around ~20,000 per year since its a national exam which is what i've heard.

so if all of those applied to monash, and the cutoff was 90%ile, then about 2,000 were offered an interview.

apparently 750 got an interview in 2008 (so from the 93%ile cutoff for 2009 entry) and there are roughly 150~200 spots from these.

There's actually a change in the UMAT for 2010 (unfortunately). Increased time limit and questions.

lol yeah. there is a fair bit on the medentry website thingo.

Im going to a lecture in march, so will probs start then. I'll probs do the few prac exams floating around on this website until then, and also do some of those drills and also a friend who finished VCE last year gave me Raven's Matrices, which is just a book full of section 3 type q's. So im thinking maybe 1 or 2 spare periods a week (out of my 7) i will dedicate to UMAT stuff in my first term. then maybe increase that after i attend thelecture things and start using materials off of their website.

But im not too stressed on powering through all of these materials ASAP, as people on this forum, and those i've spoken too who did prep courses said that aside from section 3 not much can be improved, and that it is hardly an exam that tests knowledge or ability to prepare, but rather if you take time to refine simple  problem solving techniques etc. it would be more beneificial than grinding through tonnes questions.

that seems like a really good plan, your gonna do really well hopefully for devoting all that time into it:)
im so gonna end up cramming in this six weeks, your plan is much better!

yeah i've heard that section 3 is the only improvable one, but i still think section1 and 2 can be improved too by practice, but too a certain extent... i want to improve it to that limit still though :P

according to the poll on medentry, section 1 is the hardest, then section 3.  section 2 is supposedly the most easy.

^ yeah to get a good score in section 2 you need to do much better than you would need to in the other sections.
the good thing about section 1 being the hardest, is that it's easier to get a higher score if everyone else does bad and you've been practicing and practicing!
the umat is also a ranking system like vce :P

imo, vcaa should just have a subject called medical studies, and if you want to do med you need to do it and get like 46+ or something to get an interview.  way better than umat.  would be like a combo of bio and chem lol.

would never happen though because it wouldn't be nationally recognised.

....just a guess, but I reckon 99.5+ ATAR and 95th percentile on UMAT would pretty much see you in, unless you go horribly at the interview or something.

those two scores would be enough for an interview at most places including monash :)
you'd need to rock the interview and then you have a good shot!

haha there would be sooo many people doing it and all studying really hard, so the competition would be fierce, how unfair that would be.. imo there's a better chance of getting 90%ile in the UMAT then there is of getting 46 (top ~2% of students) doing a subject at school. :P imagine the scaling....
