does anyone know how a problem based physics class runs? Is it just like a calc tute?

I did physics fundamentals last year so maybe they changed it but from what I remember you get split up into groups 5 or something and then you discusss the questions. Then the tutor runs over them at the end etc.
BSc (2015), MD1 (2016)
Tutoring in 2016: http://www.tutorfinder.com.au/tutors/detail.php?TutorID=78301
Chuck a PM if interested :)

Available for tutoring on the summer holidays for university subjects or VCe.
Also tutoring for the Melbourne uni MMIs (medical/physiotherapy interviews)

Please don't PM me for lecture slides or recordings. I don't have them anymore.

If you are enrolled this semester does this mean the progress meeting for your study plan went well, asianguy22? If so, congratulations!! It's really great that worked out, I know you were pretty afraid. Anyone would be.
Well the thing is, i never got an email or mail or anything so yea guess they didnt think i am doing too badly even though i failed 2 subjects?

Yayyy! Although 8 AM lectures aren't mandatory for attendance, I really like how quiet the campus is at 8 AM. You can hear yourself think, it's so nice. And you get a seat on the tram.

Clubs are goooood, you meet a lot of people through there. I like sharing notes with study buddies, so I want to find people taking Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cognitive Psychology, Principles of Human Structure, and Living Longer: A Global Diagnosis. I don't go to the lectures though so I don't think I'll meet many :'D

I have some BCMB and HSF notes...

But pretty sure they're not 100% and some things might be vague.

what happens if you've enrolled in a subject and still in a waiting list for a class when semester starts? will they send an email that you can't do the subject?

To all prior MAST10011 students: is the textbook necessary? The handbook puts it as "recommended" rather than "prescribed" (which many have told me just means it's not necessary) but I'm getting a lot of mixed messages - some have indicated that I must purchase it while others reckon they never even touched the book. I have already purchased the university's note book which I'm guessing is absolutely essential. I'm so confused right now so any help would be great. :)

As a rule, any "recommended" textbook is largely unnecessary.

But you generally don't want to buy any textbook until week 1 or 2. As you've probably noticed, barely any content gets taught in week 1, but you should be able to figure whether a textbook will be useful or not. In a lot of cases even the "prescribed" ones aren't necessary. I don't think I've bought a single textbook throughout uni, which has probably saved me ~$500 and left me none the worse in terms of results. Might not be possible for biomed though.

In particular with the MAST textbooks: they're really just there to supplement the course notebook (which you will work through and fill in during the lectures). Most stuff is covered well enough in the notebook to render the textbook useless, and you're given a problem booklet that contains a multitude of questions that will be of the format of the exam and the assignments.

The textbook is nooooooooooot necessary. Take that as a general rule for any Biomed subject. I've bought all of the prescribed ones and really would have got more benefit from burning my money.

I might wait for second round timetables from now on, there was no difference/lack in open classes from the first round and I logged straight on

Nope, bad idea. Usually only first year subjects will have second round allocations, many second year and higher subjects do not.
