So I applied for exchange to  Germany for the second semester of this year. The MGM are still yet to inform me if I've been nominated which on the website should've been done a couple months ago. I email them and they always just say i should hear shortly.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is it really just that I have to wait a bit longer?

Don't worry, this is normal. I only JUST received a confirmation for my nomination to the University of Birmingham last week. They work according to the different university's deadlines, so I'm assuming whichever uni you've applied for has a later deadline.

One of the staff members said at an info session that "no news is good news" in regards to nominations, so if you haven't heard anything regarding a need to change your preference or anything, don't worry too much :)
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

So, how similar has the BIOL10004 MST been to the final exam in the past (in terms of difficulty)?

I thought the mid-sem for BIOL10004 was fairly easy in our year, I knew a lot of people that got 100% on it. There were really no tricks to the questions, if you just knew the content you would be able to answer the MCQs in 20-30 seconds tbh (this was for our year though, not sure how it is this year). In the exam the the MCQs were really similar - 20-30 second questions without any tricks. Fill ins were basic as well. At the end you get a 30 mark short answer section where you get three extended questions 10 marks each. That was probably the most challenging bit to the exam, because it requires you to know everything about that particular topic in great detail, like all the little facts. But if you practise writing, develop a structure to the questions (you will get a lot of questions, model answers etc by Dawn so use them) it should be good. Overall BIOL10004 is really not that hard, you just need to memorise really there is nothing else to it, anyone can do that. It was the easiest subject I did last year. You'll do fine, just keep on top of all the content and commit everything to memory, practise the short answer questions early on.

That is exactly what it was like. It was really quick and easy (I got 100%), so I began to wonder if the exam was going to be harder. Seems like the extended response is where the grade is made; hopefully they can read my handwriting!

Congrats!

Yeah that's really the only part. But tbh in the exam you get three hours, the fill ins and MCQs will not take that long you can end up with a LOT of time leftover to do the extended questions and as long as you know the content you can take your time and write a neat and concise answer.

I think in week 9-10 Dawn will open Airport or some crap and it will give you an example of what is expected in the response and how to structure it. And then you will get a practise exam with several extended questions and model answers so use them and you'll be fine (Y)

Hey guys, got a quick question.

I'm doing BCMB20002 and BCMB20005 this semester and wanted to do BCMB30010 in sem2. But I just found out that the application deadline for sem2 round 1 closed way back in January. But then there's another date for round 2 which is late May to July. I've put BCMB30010 in my study plan, but it says places for this year are unavailable now so I can't enrol. Will I be able to enrol in the May to July period then?

From memory you can. It's a quota subject and the quota is smaller the second semester, but pretty sure they never actually fill it for Advanced Techniques. Ripper subject, hope you enjoy it :)

Thanks. I'm liking the practical focus of BCMB20005, so I think I'll like advanced techniques as well. The only thing that's worrying me is the workload. I'll also be doing microbes, anatomy and physiology next semester and all those subjects have prac components to them. Mix that with a part-time job and a habit of procrastination and I'll probably be in for a tough time. Oh well.

I'd advise against that to be perfectly honest with you. Advanced Techniques is a big step-up from Techniques, Microbes is an enormous subject and anatomy is pretty full on as well, particularly if you're not all that into it.

Yeah. Physiology is ok, but anatomy is absolutely terrible. It's hard for me to keep up with it even if I neglect my other subjects.

Just keep on trucking with anatomy. It's not fun to learn, but thankfully the assessment isn't pure recall and involves a fair amount of clinical application. As for physiology, don't let your guard down, it can catch you out! Hopefully you're finding the comprehension/conceptual focus more palatable though (I sure did).

Yeah this set up is pretty demanding, but I can't really shift any of my subjects around without totally messing up my study plan for third year.

What subjects are you planning on doing in third year?
