How's the parking situation at Monash? Is it worth buying a blue permit?

I wasn't able to get one when they were initially released, and heard there was a massive queue now to get one. Are they still worth getting, or should I find free parking, or possibly even consider public transport?

Thanks! :)

I spend the next 20 minutes thinking of a way to approach this person. I think of every possible outcome. I go through the whole conversation in my head; I practically rehearse it

eyy...I'm ready! Oh damn...where did they go!?

That's why you rehearse beforehand - like an English exam, where you've hopefully practiced/prepared a bunch of ideas that you can then bend to the particular prompt/circumstances... during-the-exam prep doesn't work that well haha.

If I spend time thinking about whether to walk up to someone when I'm in the situation, it does not happen - I always persuade myself out of it.  If instead I give myself only three seconds to decide, and then just walk straight up and plunge in, it works okay(ish).  Don't give yourself thinking time!  (But like, the number of conversations that I've started off being like 'hi, I have no clue what to say or what on earth I'm doing, but hey, I'm Heidi and isn't this social situation ridiculously awkward right now?'... #SociallyAwkwardAndProudOfIt)

(on the assumption that I am also on campus haha).

Also on the assumption that you're on ATAR Notes.

...Oh wait.

possibly even consider public transport?

As someone with no conceivable option other than public transport, this burns deep. :P

Just out of curiosity, why is there a queue anyway?

Demand for permits > number of permits.

Monash parking has changed (decreased) heaps since the building of the new Halls and other constructional feats.

There's been so much complaint over the parking situation last year. I personally think you should consider PT. I don't get why people even drive to uni, well, depending on your course, you may not even go in 5 days a week and have to pay $400 for a permit.

If you want to find free parking, you'll have to be in at around 9am or else it'll fill up really quickly and they're all really far away. There's also lots of fines going around as well.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone that will NEVER consider driving to uni, purely because I live on the west side so PT is the way to go. It's up to you but PT is relatively cheap, $3.90 daily and getting to Clayton isn't as bad as what people make of it, at least not from the city. Otherwise, you could also consider carpooling, $75.

Thank you for all the replies concerning parking at Monash! :)

Lastly, is it free parking for O-Week at Clayton, or are permits in effect?

Actually, Monash's claim is that the number of permit spots hasn't changed, they've just been moved.

Nope, permits are in effect, sorry, which is always the case except on weekends. However, o-week counts as a non-teaching period, so you can park for free in the gravel parking or the SE4 multi-level (near Robert Blackwood Hall, just off of Wellington road).
