Also, the unis make more $$$$$$$$$ out of it :P

In response to that though, I think you do get a better education with a Biomedicine or Science course + MD than you would with Monash's MBBS - MBBS is way too condensed, like I'm looking over what I've learnt this year and it's been a bit of a jumbled mess to be honest.

No, I think you misunderstood my statement. What I was suggesting was that despite people's best efforts to get into the MBBS program at Monash, no one at my school has been able to get in yet. :P

No, I recognised that, what I was saying was that it actually might be for the better :P

Maybe, but I would rather save two years and would rather not sit through a competitive biomed cohort for 3 years (from what I've heard anyway).

Don't think so haha. Hmm, think you'd be familiar with a couple of guys I know who did spesh and are now doing MBBS at Monash, but I don't want to name them here lol.

Which campus? WH or St. Kilda?

No one from my school has ever gotten into Monash's MBBS. Biomedicine is the way people have gone. :P

Biomedicine isn't a bad pathway, I reckon it's definitely the pathway of the future, more and more universities are now adopting graduate entry programs, which is great because, to be honest, most kids don't know what they want to be when they're in Y12, so having a model like UoM's allows them a bit more time to work out what they want to do.

If they decide MD isn't where they want to go, they still have other professional courses such as Dentistry, Optometry...etc. as well as doing Hons/Masters -> PhD or doing a DipEd and going into teaching, or even entering the workforce with a Biomedicine degree and working as a lab technician or demonstrator.

Why are you in a hurry to leave university and start working 50 hours a week?
I have never understood it when people say "It'll take an extra 2 years"

Cause two years of your life is really going to be lifechanging :P - that said, if you decide to do a BMedSc, for example, that gap comes down to one year :P

If you don't want to sit through a competitive Biomedicine cohort for 3 years then do Science, I don't see what's wrong with that - either way, you're in an ultra-competitive cohort anyway, so that argument really doesn't hold water :P

I agree with this, especially if you're on Scholarship or Youth Allowance, it's like you're being paid to study and you want to work...makes no sense to me!

because uni isn't cheap!

I really don't understand, two years of uni will set you back around $12,000 or there abouts, you'll earn that back within a few months of working, I don't really see any reason why this is that much of an issue. Idk, just don't go on holidays or something if you're really that stingy, I never understand why people can blow $10,000+ on a holiday and decide that two years of uni is too expensive.

I'm personally quite keen on the Biomedicine pathway myself actually. I just feel I need to pursue more academic endeavours and explore the field a little more before I commit to any career-oriented qualification. Also, my parents are so adamant that I'll be staying in Melbourne to study that they have promised to help me out with a full fee if necessary. Now my goal is to ensure I get an ATAR of 99+ so I can guarantee a full fee place if required (although I'd much rather earn a CSP myself with the GAMSAT).

Well there are other issues too. Not everyone likes uni that much.

For example, all the assignments, exams, tutes, lectures etc can get pretty monotonous at times. I wouldn't want an extra 2 years of that, especially when that two years is in a competitive environment such as Biomed (or so I've heard from both at Monash and UoM).

Each to their own I guess.

But you don't even have to do Biomed if you want to avoid the competition, you can do Science, which (according to what I've heard) is pretty chill. Either way, if you're keen on becoming a doctor you're gonna have to sit through a few years with a competitive cohort regardless, given that the 2012 - 2016 Monash MBBS cohort is one of the most competitive in recent years, I don't see why Biomed competition is going to be much of an issue (especially when you can just do Science).

But you're right, each to their own.

Anyway, I can't help but think that we're slowly moving towards a graduate entry system, much more like the USA.

2 yrs and you only have to pay $12k, you said it wasn't cheap? :OOO
For me, I have to pay $66k BScience for 2 yrs!!!

But personally, I like MBBS over Biomed/Science because to become a doctor, you need to do internship after getting the degree as well. Postgrad is just too long while I wanna go to work, help my parents out rather than going to the lectures, tutes, doing assignments, becoming my parents' burden for 2 extra yrs
2012: Bio | Chem| Spesh | Methods | ESL | Vietnamese
2013-2016: BActuarial studies/BCommerce @ ANU

Thanks to gossamer, TT, pi, laserblued, Thus for helping and supporting me during VCE

Seriously though, 2 years is a very insignificant amount of time over the course of your life. But either way, we're moving towards a graduate medical system anyway. More and more universities will start to adopt graduate medical programs.

Just on internships, who knows how bad they will be in an extra two years, say a comparison of 2017 and 2019 (for VCE 2012 grads)?

You could argue that by then, the system will have been fixed, otherwise it would just be so bad it would be ridiculous, but either way, I honestly think that Australian medical students will always be given internships, otherwise that is just stupid, the govt. paying for our training and then not having internship places for us. It's more the internationals that should be worried.

I wouldn't take that risk (and note that not everyone in this convo is an Aussie citizen).

As I said before though, each to their own on this one.
