I know this is off-topic, but I just read that John Brumby and Ted Baillieu went to your school EZ, Melbourne Grammar, and they were also in the same year level! Strange..

Baillieu can lick me.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

well apparently the Dux is whoever the principal likes the most.
the principal is a dickhead, so we all hate him and give him crap and with good reason. example, for our last day of school, rather than celebrate any or anything he put us in a bus and sent us to a nursing home to do community service (aka advertising the school). within an our we were all in tears after hearing stories from the helpers and being with people who had dementia (terrible condition :(). so after begging teachers to take us back to school, we went at 1.30 rather than the 3.00 the asshole had intended, oh and he didnt go with us btw. so we get back to school and rather than allow us to go home, he sent us to "english class" for the next 1.5 hrs, even though none of us had books, novels or even a pen. when we asked why he didnt come with us he said "i've been assisting there numerous times" to which i replied "if you have been there then you would have been aware of how depressing that environment is and you wouldnt have sent us there to begin with". he had no reply. so you see...asshole

so our Dux is the school captain, and got a 50 in greek the year before (it helps when you live in the country for 16/17 years). he goes with the dickhead to all his functions/presentations/open days/ceremonies, advertises the school and hey here, your Dux! His subjects are theory based (legal, accounting, methods-doesnt count, greek, english-he's crap), so i dont see him scoring over 95 despite the 50. so rather than wait for results to come out, he's Dux due to none-eduction reasons.
keep in mind im a prefect (i barely did anything big but lets move on) and went on my weekends a few times to these presentations too...where's my Dux award?? in other words...ive been robbed -_-
sorry, needed to vent

Duxing is solely based on one's ATAR score. Pre-emptively declaring someone Dux defeats the purpose of the title - like awarding the gold medal before the start of the race.
Perhaps Mr Dux achieved another award?

^ Haha! So how's that gonna work? A Dux with less than 95, and then other students go up on stage with 99+ and stuff?

Isn't the Dux the one with the highest ATAR, end of story?

But your principal does sound like an idiot.

exactly, Dux= top ATAR
its funny he got a A in his accounting mid-year, and was convinced that it meant his SS range was 40-45 LOL
cant wait for when his results come out and there's no 40s. i just played around on enter calc and with 40s on both theory subs, 35 english and 30 methods (he flopped but i did too), he's looking at ~93/94
my school isnt very strong, we rarely pull out 90s but my year is very smart, out of the 20 of us we have 5 aiming for 90s (in contrast to last year of 1/30 in 90s)
