Have you had a look at the exam yet, Joe? If so, what did you think?
-
I was unable to sleep due to my nerves. As a result, my structure and expression was not as good as it should have been. I wrote about 3 pages for text response and AA. 1.5 for comparative 😅

Hey, at least it's done! :D
What was the hardest section, do you think? And the easiest?
-
IMO the language analysis was decent. Personally, I really disliked both the comparative prompts for my texts (black diggers and the longest memory). Hopefully my performance on the other two salvage my grade :-\

Nope; had to take an excursion once the kids went in. Will be fascinating to see what they came up and whether any of my guesstimates were correct.
-
It’s. Over.
Congrats to everyone!
-
hello guys
do anyone know what the persuasive techniques for the comment for language analysis?
-
Anyone who did Frankenstein, how do you think it went? Personally I struggled with the prompts given, chose the 2nd one hesitantly and wrote a pretty ordinary essay :-\ I'm predicting 5/10 which is really below my standard.
-
what was the language analysis piece?
-
what was the language analysis piece?
It was some newsletter from a primary school that raised concerns about littering. Contained one comment
-
WOO! IT'S OVER GUYS! CONGRATS ON GETTING THROUGH UNIT 3/4 ENGLISH!
-
hello guys
do anyone know what the persuasive techniques for the comment for language analysis?
Examiners don't care about persuasive techniques.
-
It was alright
7 pages for la
5 for the other 2
Prompts for stasiland 1984 weren't that great
-

I feel you.
I did Frankenstein too, I chose the first one as I felt it was easier to write about but I do agree the prompts weren't the easiest!! I struggled to find good quotes to do with compassion, I think I got maybe around a 6/10 since a lack of quotes but I think I made some decent points, so I guess I'll find out in December. Best of luck.

I think I messed up the Frankenstein. I chose topic 1 and got a fairway through before realising a much better way to respond. I was too far in to go back, so I sorta had to roll with a fairly crap approach. I'm hoping for an 8/10, but I have a feeling its in the 7 range.

I feel you - I chose topic 1 for my pair of YOW and TC and like yourself realised I had a better response to topic 2 but had to roll with whatever I written. Hopefully both of our pieces are okay :)
-
Who did No Sugar question ii?
"Joe says to Mary: "i'll never be over".
'No Sugar shows the importance of defiance in the face of persecution'
I am not sure If i had answered the questions properly. What would have you guys write about?
-

Same! I chose topic one for the YOW + TC comparison but completely lost my train of thought

I felt like I didnt get to express what I wanted to say clearly and that stresses me out but at least it's over!
Btw, does anyone know how much the exam contributes to study score?
-

Btw, does anyone know how much the exam contributes to study score?
The exam is worth 50% of the study score
I am sure you did fine - it is hard to fully express yourself well in the timed conditions

Omg the frankenstein ones screwed me up. I too struggled with the topics and ended up writing a mundane essay, despite the fact that the practises I did were of better standard. I chose the first topic because I knew if I chose the second, I would have not stayed on topic which IMO is more dangerous than writing an average essay.
But thankfully it's over. No more English- a bitter sweet feeling
-
Anyone do topic 1 for Tracks & Into the Wild?
How'd you feel about it? I found it fairly difficult to talk about the ways they seek to discover what really matters to them. I think my ideas were:
1)Both seek isolation and this affords them a discovery of self.
2) Davidson seeks hardship in order to "prove", whereas McCandless does not really consider hardship.
3) Ultimately, both inevitably seek/value a blend of both worlds, where freedom is available with some relationships.
Had to really rush the conclusion, so the end ins pretty damn bad :'(
-
The Medea prompts were great, and the Stasiland/Nineteen Eighty-Four prompts were awful. Language Analysis was pretty average :'( honestly have no clue at all how I went. Wrote 5.5 pages for LA and 6.5 for TR and Comparative.
-
Which option for the crucible/year of wonders did everyone choose?
I did option 1 but both prompts were really confusing...
Section C was pretty straight forward though :)
-
The Medea prompts were great,
I definitely thought the same. I ended choosing the second one. What about you?
-
I definitely thought the same. I ended choosing the second one. What about you?
Yep I ended up writing on the second one as well! The first one was very very basic, I thought the second one was a tad more interesting.
-

I thought the prompts were pretty difficult, but also chose the second one. I think it was a good essay and I discussed a lot of interesting things I was hoping to get into my essay but since I did it last my expression and vocab were suboptimal. Also worried I misinterpreted the prompt or didn't answer the question fully.

Did prompt 2, didn't think either of them were too bad although I was expecting easier questions since it's the first year. Probably wrote a fairly mediocre essay but can't do anything about it now. Section C was a lot easier than anticipated though.
-
I feel amazing about that exam!! I somehow finished all 3 pieces by 11:15 and left the room at 11:45 after reviewing my work twice. I also didn't feel too nervous beforehand despite only studying last night.
CONGRATS EVERYONE! WE DID IT! ;D
-

Odd, I did the belonging topic and was swamped with ideas of how to approach it!
-
i wasn’t able to do a conclusion for section c and im so stressed that its stuffed me over
-

really ??
I found the Medea prompts were harder than comparative, but still they weren't suuuper hard. For comparative I'd written an essay on the prompt about rewriting history before, so I'm feeling pretty confident with that one
-
i wasn’t able to do a conclusion for section c and im so stressed that its stuffed me over
don't worry too much about the conclusion for language analysis, body paragraphs are definitely most important!!
-
Wrote too much for LA, had 5 body paragraphs, didnt manage to finish my conlusion for comparsion aswell. But oh well, overall, pretty happy but not ecstatic
-
For people who have done vce eng in the past, can you please comment what numerical scores you got on your exam essays and what study score it gave you? Just curious haha
-

Totally feel you; was not a fan of the prompts; where was the one about ambition?!?!? Hahahahah. Still I ended up choosing the 1st one and still feel like I managed a pretty good essay, even if it wasn't quite up to my usual standard. I'm sure a lot of other people struggled with them too though so I wouldn't be too worried about it :)
-
Yep I ended up writing on the second one as well! The first one was very very basic, I thought the second one was a tad more interesting.
It's true that the first prompt was not as interesting as the second prompt but it's not simple tho :o
-
I just realised that Dennise was a girl, not a guy.
Am i going to lose marks?
-
don't worry too much about the conclusion for language analysis, body paragraphs are definitely most important!!
Conclusions are completely unimportant to Section C (that's why the sample responses in the exam reports never have one).
-
Did we seriously have to anaylse the logo of the school for LA?? I completely missed it...
-
I just realised that Dennise was a girl, not a guy.
Am i going to lose marks?
Dont think so, as long as you were consistent throughout the whole essay. Besides i dont think the examiners care if you call the writer a guy or girl more than they care about vocab and analysis.
-
Yep I ended up writing on the second one as well! The first one was very very basic, I thought the second one was a tad more interesting.
I chose the first one rather than second because I thought my arguments could be more theme based (reason and passion) rather than character based if you're just talking about Medea + Jason, but I was originally gonna do that second prompt
-
"Fair go, Denise"
Thank God English is over
-
Dont think so, as long as you were consistent throughout the whole essay. Besides i dont think the examiners care if you call the writer a guy or girl more than they care about vocab and analysis.
Exactly. One of the teachers at my school is an assessor and she said that she gets annoyed when people say 'he/she' throughout the essay.
-

I am not sure that you had to but I did just in case. I feel like the main image was quite simple so it was hard to extract a lot of meaning from it. I just linked it to the idea of excessive waste 'clogging' the bins and eventually the country.
What did everyone else say for the images?
-
Here's a scan of the booklet, pardon my markings, hopefully someone can scan a clean one.

said the exact same as you :)
-
Well that turned out ok. I am not sure about getting a 40 now. I forgot to include the visuals in section C - but I analysed in detail how denise And Louise were trying to get the audience to align themselves with the contention of reducing food packaging. Almost did not realise that there were two pieces. Quickly, albeit in small and crappy writing corrected this. Heres to a 6 or 8/10 if I am lucky for section C.did the first option for All About Eve
-
Lol, Actually Louise was against it. 'Enjoy the benefits of the 21st century'
-
Was doing pretty good for L.A but then hit a bit of a wall at Tracks and Into the Wild and Frankenstein. Personally found that all of the practise questions for Frankenstein were aimed in a different direction to the one on the exam.
At least its over
-
Did anyone notice the spelling error on Medea prompt 2? "Euripides's" Lmaoo
-
Lmao I might've shit the bed, Medea P1 said '...the crucial conflict is between reason and passion" and I talked about more than one type of conflict.
Not sure how hard you get penalised for this but rip.
-

Well there are certainly more conflicts in the play besides reason and passion.
These include:
-Men vs Women
-Barbarian vs Civilised
-
I don't know how well I did... done anyone have this feeling as well?
-
Who chose the topic about the structure of the film for All about eve??? Can someone please let me know what they talked about as I'm stressing that I talked about the wrong thing! :(
-

I did this too! I focused a bit too much on the word 'crucial' and kind of took it as them asking whether it was the main conflict that contributed to the tragedy so I explored the patriarchal society and the Gods as well. Hope it doesn't come across as avoiding the prompt :(
-

I didn't write on it, but you could have discussed mise en scene, costuming, etc

What do you mean?
Were we not meant to talk about different types of conflict?
I spoke about men vs. women and barbarian vs. corinthian values as well
Is this wrong??
What else would you talk about?!

Interesting question.
Here is a quote from the 2015 examiners report about a somewhat similar question:
"The actual topic („Medea is about extremes of human emotion.‟ Discuss.), however, focused closely on the idea of „extremes of human emotions‟. It appeared that some students did not comprehend the significance of the term „extremes‟. Others responded briefly to the essence of the topic but then spent the majority of their response beginning with such phrases as „it is not only about extremes, it is also about...‟ and then proceeded to write about themes they had prepared."
Really, I wouldn't worry about it. I think the word 'crucial' in that prompt gives you some freedom. No point second guessing now; I'm guessing a lot of people are in the same position as you.
-

It's not wrong, I think it's good that you addressed the 'crucial' part of the prompt!! It's just that only one of my paragraphs really addressed the passion/reason part of the prompt and I felt like I didn't emphasise the conflict part enough. Most of my friends did P1 passion P2 reason P3 sophrosyne.
-

Doesn't that completely ignore the word "crucial" though?
I'm so confused :P because I thought they worded it that way on purpose to trip people up into writing a classic passion vs. reason essay (that literally everyone who did medea would have prepared)
That might just be me though
-
for the comparative essay me and my friend discussed it afterwards and it literally felt like we wrote the exact same essay!! should i be worried?? because we are in the same class, had the same tutor and we had the exact same paragraphs. im worried we also had the same evidence, like our essay wouldn't be word for word the same obviously but we both chose a topic that we'd done together and were confident in. Im just worried about plagiarism? like does that count?
-
I referred to the principal, as THE PRINCIPAL and WALKER, but i accidentally called Louise DENISE throughout the whole piece.... have I messed the whole thing up??
-
how did everyone go with no sugar? The second prompt about joe, I stuffed it and wrote two body paragraphs that were borderline incoherent.

Nope, I got the same impression. I wrote a passion/reason essay a few days ago and I chose to write BPs on other themes but it was just the way I wrote about the other themes that made me unsure.

Assessors only get one essay from each school so there's no chance of both of your essays ending up in the same marking pile!
-
I don't know how well I did... done anyone have this feeling as well?
I feel you - it's hard being the first year when no-one really knows how it's going to play out but as John O Callaghan once said, 'The what ifs and should haves will eat your brain.' So in that sense, I guess we just have to accept what we get, although I believe that we all hopefully did better than expected :)
Best Wishes for the rest of your exams!
-

Hey mishs! I did it that way with a para passion overriding reason, then reason overriding passion, and then sophrosyne.
I don't think I really strayed from the essay topic bc i defined what i meant by crucial conflict within my contention ( I said these traits are in conflict themselves, but don't have to be as they are not mutually exclusive).
But either way would have worked I think, just because the essay prompt was so open to interpretation, as long as you defined what it meant.
-
I haven't thought about it as deeply as all of you.
But the way I see the prompt: 'In the Medea, the crucial conflict is between reason and passion.' Discuss.
There are so many different ways you could attack it.
-As some users have done you could focus on reason, passion and sophrosyne. The effects each had on the conflict.
-You could focus on the "crucial" part of the prompt and argue that men vs women and barbarian vs civilised are more important conflicts in the play.
I would stop worrying and saying and/or thinking about what ifs, if i did this, only i did that or this, oh i should have done, etc.
It is waste of time. You have other exams coming up. Focus on that.
If you really want to know the answer to your thoughts. Wait for the assessor report to come out on it.
But you can all argue/discuss which way and what to do for the prompt. But you won't know till the report comes out.

anyone else do ransom and invictus? what did you think!?
-
Forgot to mention the date that the article was released! It was in such small writing below the title :-X :-[ :'( :(

Forgot to mention the date that the article was released! It was in such small writing below the title :-X :-[ :'( :(
In my opinion, I don’t think something that small even matters. If it does then we can have marks taken off together. :)
-
Forgot to mention the date that the article was released! It was in such small writing below the title :-X :-[ :'( :(
I don't think it really matters if you do or don't explicitly say 'Denise Walker's article published on the *date* contends...' just as long as you recognise that the comment was in response to the idea proposed in the main article. Not that it makes it right but all year I never explicitly mentioned the date of publication in any of my LA essays and my teacher (who I highly respect the opinion of and is by no means a lenient marker) never deducted any marks for it nor mentioned it as something I must be doing to score highly. My point being is that I don't think you'll lose any marks for it, and if I'm wrong then take comfort from knowing that I'm in the same position as you. Still be proud of your efforts!
-
Oh shit :'(
After 4+ hours after the English exam, I just realised I made a really huge mistake. I forgot to analyse the picture in section c :( am I stuffed? Will I lose many marks?
I'm so angry at myself. :(
-
anyone else do ransom and invictus? what did you think!?
Gd topics...for Ransom and Invictus!
I did the first one about revenge and forgiveness....found it alright!!
But i jst realised i totally stuff section c up....totally forgot to mention arguments and contention but simply stated how
persuasive techniques were effective :-[ :-\ :-\ :'(Sooooooo dumb!!!! hopefully the rest makes up 4 it!!!
But at least English is finished for ever!!!
-

Did you not analyse the image or the logo? if you did neither, its looking grim... My teacher says you can't get more than 50% if you don't mention the images at all.
-

Not at all, don't stress! Those two essays will probably go to completely separate markers in separate corners of the state, so you have nothing to worry about! It's normal that a lot of students talk about similar key points/evidence anyway :)
I referred to the principal, as THE PRINCIPAL and WALKER, but i accidentally called Louise DENISE throughout the whole piece.... have I messed the whole thing up??
So long as they could kind of work out who you were talking about, you'd probably be okay (e.g. if you had a sentence like: 'In her comment, parent Denise argues that whilst "green ideas" are important, sometimes convenience must take priority...' then it's all sweet!
Forgot to mention the date that the article was released! It was in such small writing below the title :-X :-[ :'( :(
Definitely nothing to worry about here, this is completely inessential! They probably won't even notice!
Oh shit :'(

Not mentioning the visual at all does limit you a little bit, but it's not catastrophic. If your analysis of the written material was decent, you can still get a mid range score (6-7/10), and your other essays will be marked independently, so they won't be impacted at all :)
-
did we have to analyse the logo for LA?
-
I totally forgot to mention the logo. Does that hugely affect my mark even though I analyse the other image? :'(
-
Were we supposed to contrast the approaches of the comment and the article? I only suggested that Louise responded to Walker's remarks - but didn't actually compare techniques adopted. I did everything else though. :'(

Nah, though you could have made something of the comparison between the lovely natural tree in the logo in contrast to the hideous man-made trash heap in the photo. But it's waaay more important to analyse the actual photo; the logo is just a little extra opportunity that you could take or leave :)
You also didn't need to say anything about the newsletter format or the toolbar at the top of the page. Again, you maybe could have said that the digital distribution fits the 'no waste' sentiment of the main piece, but that's completely optional.
You're marked on what you do cover, not on what you don't! In other words, the fact that you missed out on a persuasive technique or an analysis opportunity along the way won't impact you at all if the rest of your analysis is solid :)
-
Were we supposed to contrast the approaches of the comment and the article? I only suggested that Louise responded to Walker's remarks - but didn't actually compare techniques adopted. I did everything else though. :'(
Yep, comparison isn't at all essential (in fact, it's better that you focus on analysis than go back and forth like 'Denise was logical whereas Louise was emotional'). Analysis is worth marks, comparison isn't! So using points of similarity/difference as a way of transitioning is all you need (e.g. 'In contrast, Louise instead contends that...')
-
for the comparative, some teachers at my school had suggested writing two paragraphs instead of the traditional 3 as it allows for the better development of ideas and themes. has anyone else been told this? i didnt trust my teachers it'd get me a top notch score but I did it anyway fucc
i did invictus/ransom (1st prompt) and basically whipped out 2 paragraphs, approx a page each - one on the futility of revenge and another all on the themes based on forgiveness, defiance of expectations/progression of societies. although the depth is there + width, so analysis of lots of diff chars, will I get a crappy score because I wrote a really generic essay? feel like i didnt get to properly dissect the topic due to time pressures ;) 8) ??? :-[
-
Hey!! I know this sounds dumb, but I said the principal published a "weekly message" instead of a newsletter in the introduction, because that's what was said in the background information. Would this matter?? :'(
-
HI SOMEONE PLEASE HELP
I didn't even analyse Louise's article because I had run out of time! I mentioned her tone in the introduction and stated her stance in the introduction though. I spent a majority of my time writing on Denise, like 4-5 pages, and time just told me to suck it. Considering I was confident in all of my others essays, would I still be able to get an A+ score? Cheers.
-
Given the nature of the exam, do they take into account the pressure and mark slightly more leniently? As in, would a less well-expressed script that would ordinarily score 7/10 on a SAC be marked with this pressure in mind such that it may be higher than that?
Cheers.
-
I did the same topic for Ransom and Invictus! What did you write about?
[/quote]
ummm i did mandela/priam n how they were able to forgive their past in order to be better fathers to their nations...
Achilles/Mandelas security team n how they sought revenge but realized that it was futile and that forgiveness was able to liberate them from their past.
Hecuba/Brenda and how their is often opposition to forgiveness etc
Somax/Francois and how they lead by example the need to forgive, and showed others how forgiveness was needed and that revenge was useless!!
thats in short!!
What did you write about??
-
Absolutely gutted after the comparative question for Year of Wonders and The Crucible. Chose the first topic and did two solid body paras that took up 3 pages, then started my third with five mins left to go. I got through describing YOW and only got one sentence into TC, any thoughts as to marks? Hoping for an 8!! :(
-

No because that what it said in the background information!! Just as long as you stated what it was, which you did, you will be fine!!!

I discussed the "clogging grey web" of grief that enfolded Achilles and contrasted that with Mandela's ability to forgive and not continue the cycle of revenge. Then I discussed Priam and how he is able to find "something new" in his forgiveness towards Achilles, as how similarly Francois leads his teammates to forgive. Finally, I compared Peleous (Achilles' father) who took in Patroclus with how Mandela takes in a family of '42 million'.
Wow that was more difficult to remember than what I thought it would be! I think it was along those lines anyway ;)
-
Do I get extra marks for talking about the logo in section C?

Do I get extra marks for talking about the logo in section C?
Also, I chose the challenging landscape question in Burial Rites, is that fine?
I don't think it'd be extra marks, but it'd certainly add depth to your response.
Landscape is one of the best things about BR, shows depth of understanding and makes your response seem more complex!

It was good .
The prompt for Lieutenant was good I did prompt 1 . It was quite do able.
The prompt for Ransom & invictus was good I did prompt 2. It was easy to add quotes and come with good ideas.
The language analysis topic was good recycling is good. I did the paper backwards.
I used extra paper ,another answer book.
I am glad that 1 subject is done ,1 subject down. Just 4 more left. two this week

What do you mean?
Were we not meant to talk about different types of conflict?
I spoke about men vs. women and barbarian vs. corinthian values as well
Is this wrong??
What else would you talk about?!
I did this question too!!
I initially focused on the conflict between reason and passion through Medea and Jason--Medea personifies Pathos as she is too passionate, while Jason has too much logos (logic) adding to their conflict
then I focused on the internal conflict of Medea and her struggle to grapple with her passion/reason
my last paragraph focused on which won out (I said reason, as she was cold and calculated and didn't divert from her plan, highlighting her Sophoclean heroine nature) and focused on how the gods and humans saw her crimes and (lack of) punishment!
-
What did everyone talk about for Medea prompt 2 - 'Euripides' Character Medea is a desperate woman maltreated by a despicable man. Do you agree? ' I talked about -
P1 - Patriarchal society mistreats and hurts Medea
P2 - Jason hurts Medea & is a despicable man - Talked about how he is selfish and cold ect.
P3 - Medea hurts herself in her excess passion

Comparative Text Response Question :)
Hey guys, so basically, my comparative piece (section b on the exam) was quite rushed. I managed to write 3 pages and had some really good ideas and evidence from the texts, however I'm just worried that because I didn't have a formal conclusion I may be punished.
My questions are:
1. Is a conclusion 100% necessary in a comparative piece?
2. If the rest of my essay was 3 pages of fairly strong ideas and evidence, could not having a conclusion prevent me from getting say an 8-10/10?
I didn't have a conclusion, but I did have this as a closing line:
Perhaps this is the true 'ransom' of Malouf's novel - the opportunity Priam provides Achilles to reconnect with his humanity.
Would this be sufficient?
Thanks for any response! :)

P2 - Jason hurts Medea & is a despicable man - Talked about how he is selfish and cold ect.
P3 - Medea hurts herself in her excess passion
P1-Medea is frantic and her desperate desire to revolt comes from various despicable men and not one man only (Jason and Creon)
P2-While Medea faces maltreatment she is also treated well by various characters
P3-In a sense, Medea's desperation and course of revenge results in her own maltreatment of those who have inflicted harm towards her. (Creon, and I briefly talked about the Aristotelian notion of Greek tragedies in which a "tragic hero's" punishment exceeds the crime, and through this I've shown how Medea punished Jason in an excessive manner)
I don't know if this is acceptable because people have really different views on the topic so : (?

Anyone do Bombshells and The Penelopiad for comparative, and if so-wha did you write and with what topic? :)

I can't comment specifically for the comparative, but I think globally in English not having a conclusion isn't really going to affect you too much - I mean, there's no specific criteria that you have to have a conclusion, it just rounds out the piece nicely and wraps it up - they're definitely not going to be like "well, this was a good piece, but it's missing a conclusion...so we'll take a few marks off for that" :) It's more important to have good analysis/ideas and good knowledge of the text (which it sounds like you had!) than it is to have a conclusion.
Definitely still possible to be getting high range scores without a conclusion or even finishing an essay, too - I know there's a few users on the forum who didn't even finish their essays and got study scores in the 40s!
So yeah, tl;dr - don't sweat not having a conclusion, won't really impact you at all. Sounds like you're all set for some good marks! All the best for your other exams :)

Thank you so much for the reply

I am not sure that you had to but I did just in case. I feel like the main image was quite simple so it was hard to extract a lot of meaning from it. I just linked it to the idea of excessive waste 'clogging' the bins and eventually the country.
What did everyone else say for the images?
I said that the image depicts a planet in which it is robbed of its natural phenomena, such as the horizon [which was covered with piles of bags] and the radiant sun [which was obscured by the dark, gloomy clouds]
I guess that's how I interpret things. it's no the best though.

Hmmmm
I dunno about my response lol
My tutor reckons its spot on, some people think its off topic but I did the crucial conflicts prompt
My interpretation of "crucial" is that this confliction requires resolution, thus:
P1 -The dangers of adhering solely to one of these two emotions
P2- Aegeus and his circumvention of peril through sophrosyne
P3- Medea initially suffering from the confliction but finds resolution, escapes justice i.e peril circumvented once more
P4- (The confliction stated in the prompt I reckoned may had influenced me to consider the idea of what happens if it is not resolved)
So P4- Though, Euripides asserts that without resolution in this confliction, the innoncents of society will not escape the damaging consequences. Where I proceeded to talk about the children, and Glauce as emblematic of innocents in society, moreover Glauce as a royal, her death signifies that ultimately no one escapes the consequences.
Seems to me Ive either absolutely aced this prompt or blown off immensely LOLZ

Who chose the topic about the structure of the film for All about eve??? Can someone please let me know what they talked about as I'm stressing that I talked about the wrong thing! :(
Discussed the narration, the extended flashback, and the non-linear sequence

Absolutely gutted after the comparative question for Year of Wonders and The Crucible. Chose the first topic and did two solid body paras that took up 3 pages, then started my third with five mins left to go. I got through describing YOW and only got one sentence into TC, any thoughts as to marks? Hoping for an 8!! :(
Can defs get an 8 - my trial exam was marked by vcaa examiners and EXACT same scenario but i got an 8

Thank you!! I spoke to my teacher after and was told that by that stage the assessor would have a pretty certain idea of what the mark would be based on the evidence presented, just hope everything pans out :)

Honestly, went better than I thought it woul, language analysis was good although I think there were certain parts I could have written better. Text response I did measure for measure and was so prepared for a Duke question and actually smiled when I saw that one (who the hell smiles in an english exam wtf 😂), competitive I did 1984 and Stasiland, wasn’t too happy with the topics but was able to make the one on rewriting history work. Not overly sure mark wise but hopefully I’ll be happy with it in December.
Just out of curiosity - did anyone choose the topic on women for measure for measure? I personally thought it’d be quite difficult to write on and everyone I’ve spoken with so far has agreed and wrong on the Duke too
So relieved that English is over now though

Hi guys,
Is it a total catastrophe if my text response essay was incomplete? I devoted so much time to the comparative that when I finally approached the text response, I was freaking out and thats when things went...erh.. downhill. I wrote on 'All About Eve' (1st prompt) and wrote a solid intro, my first body was orientated around describing the Theatre as being a complex and convoluted place, one in which can be sinister in nature due to the prevalence and ambit of treachery and the second was very haphazard. I intended to do 3 paragraphs but, because of time, I merged the two together and these were the paragraphs that were going to directly address the prompt. The paragraph was a bit all over the place, I had seven minutes to go and I just word vomited out everything, trying to force as many of my primary ideas concerning relationships and rivalries within the timeframe, some of which were insightful, though worded in a rushed manner. With these alone, I nearly finished the provided space. Is there any hope? :-\ :'(
-
How many marks are lost for NOT writing an intro and conc AT ALL for comparative and text response?
Be brutally honest please

Definitely not a total catastrophe :)
You might lose some marks for a less coherent response to the topic, but like, if the assessors can see where you're going, and if you've displayed a) knowledge of the text and b) an ability to develop ideas and all that, that's where you'll get marks. Remember - they know your essay was written in a time pressured exam, they're not expecting the same quality that you'd expect if someone had a week to prepare a response to the same topic. :)
I said it earlier - there's plenty of people around who haven't finished their essays in the exam and got study scores in the 40s - so it's definitely not a disaster.
Best thing to do is put it behind you and not worry about it (easier said than done, I know). It's out of your hands now, and worrying about the what ifs and nitpicking your performance is only going to psych yourself out for your other exams. Plus, we all have a tendency to remember our work being worse than it actually was!
All the best for your other exams :)
How many marks are lost for NOT writing an intro and conc AT ALL for comparative and text response?
Be brutally honest please
There's not a set number - maybe your teacher could give a better insight if you had a chat with them.
I'd say not having an intro is going to potentially impact your marks, because an intro is where you're setting up and showing the direction of your essay. The assessor will still know what you're talking about, but it's not going to be as coherent as a piece with an introduction might be.
Having a conclusion is of less importance, I feel - so not having one won't really impact your results. There's no requirement for it in the criteria, we just use them because they round out an essay nicely and let you reiterate the author's message(s), etc.
Again - if you've shown good knowledge of the text and its ideas and messages, and you've been able to develop your own ideas in response to the prompt and use the text to support your ideas - that's what's key. Probably not the answer you're looking for, but I hope this has helped a bit.
Like I said above, there's no point in stressing now - put English in the past (which I'm sure most people will be happy to do haha), and prepare yourself for your other exams. :)
-
Thanks K888! I asked and she said 2-5 marks lost w/o intro and conc for comparative and text response.
When you mentioned those who didn't finish their exams and still got above 40, what do you mean by not finish? Like miss out on conc, a whole paragraph, etc?

Nice one! I mentioned the gloomy clouds too and how it was a dark vision of the future if change was not created now.

No because that what it said in the background information!! Just as long as you stated what it was, which you did, you will be fine!!!
phew.. cos i did exactly the same thing! tho did it in confidence becuase teacher always said look and read the background info..
i also put in later in the analysis 'the newsletter .... blah blah' so hopefully

i like full blanked it and did the rigid structure of excessive passion, reason and hence moderation for the second prompt for Medea.... idek I tried to fit how she was desperate for revenge bc of her passion omg I'm so dumb ahhhahhaha and jason treating her badly due to his excessive logic :(

I wouldn't worry. If you used lots of good evidence with insightful analysis, it shouldn't matter. Especially if you provided a good knowledge analysis in the last paragraph to separate you from other similar responses. As in, perfectly argued, a response with your structure could still get a 10 :)

No problem :) I think the message is - it's a really variable amount, and it may not end up affecting your marks *too* much.
By not finishing the exam - I mean unfinished essays, like having an unfinished paragraph, etc. If you've got baller arguments and display an awesome knowledge of the text(s) - the assessors like that, and the key thing is that they can see where you're going with your writing.
Like I've said, people have definitely not written conclusions and still received 40+, because conclusions are pretty irrelevant for article analysis and not *super* important for the others :)
-
Re. not finishing your essays
I don't believe I completely finished any of my essays in my exam, and I still got a 43, so it can't be ~too~ important haha. From memory, I nearly finished both my LA and text response, but for my other essay, I managed about 2.8 paragraphs, i.e. intro + two body paragraphs, and I didn't finish that second body para. 😂
Maybe for full marks essays need to be completed, but if what you've started with is solid and shows you can meet criteria, the examiners won't mark you down hugely because you didn't finish. :)
semantic satiationnnn is essay even a word

Thanks heids and K888 :D
I think my main concern is not finishing the intros for text + comparative, not even worried about not finishing the conc for text + comparative anymore

I didn't even see the Principal's name, where was it? In the Background? I talked about the visuals a lot more than I thought I would though, so I think I'm alright. I said for the garbage bags how it looked like a apocalyptic future, or something to that effect. How did people write 3-7 pages? I could barely write 2.5 for each task. Hope I can get a 6 for each of my tasks, as there was more text knowledge, evidence and better ideas than my practice pieces which I got 5-5.5 for.
How much would failing to mention the Principal's name affect things? Given that I analysed both visuals, and both the message and the comment.
-
How did people write 3-7 pages? I could barely write 2.5 for each task.
Handwriting size (and whether some people write double spaced) can cause a big difference in how many pages people write. Your 2.5 pages might have the same amount of words as someone else's 5 pages :)

I didn’t analyse the tree only the pile of rubbish . Would i lose marks ?

Who else was (pleasantly) surprised with the I for Isobel prompts? I was really happy with my response to it as I feel I really engaged with the prompt and made some meaningful connections. Irrespective of my score, I think my section A response was my best text response I've written all year.
Also, I owe a massive thank you to the ATAR notes English book. I purchased it at a mid-year lecture and it's really made a noticeable difference to my writing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! ;D (If any current year 11's are reading this right now I dub it as an essential!)
-
Congrats everyone to making through (imo) the most stressful part of VCE - the English Exam!
Anyways, to all those people asking "I forgot to include X in Language Analysis will I get marked down?" - the answer is no. I've talked to exam markers before and they do not go through the exam with a checklist - they look for your overall ability to analyse and contrast the various purposes and intentions of the writer - forgetting to mention a particular technique will not go against you at all.
Hell, in my LA in a frenzied panic I forgot to include so much basic stuff in my introduction (Name, date, techniques, purpose) but I still walked out with two 8's because examiners don't care that much - they're looking for your ability to analyse, not go down a checklist.
So keep calm and focus on your next exams :)
-
I just realised that Dennise was a girl, not a guy.
Am i going to lose marks?
No, but if you're making THAT mistake ...
-
I feel amazing about that exam!! I somehow finished all 3 pieces by 11:15 and left the room at 11:45 after reviewing my work twice. I also didn't feel too nervous beforehand despite only studying last night.
CONGRATS EVERYONE! WE DID IT! ;D
From the above, no, they did it. You thought you did.
-
Did we seriously have to anaylse the logo of the school for LA?? I completely missed it...
No.
-
I did this too! I focused a bit too much on the word 'crucial' and kind of took it as them asking whether it was the main conflict that contributed to the tragedy so I explored the patriarchal society and the Gods as well. Hope it doesn't come across as avoiding the prompt :(
If you said there were other crucial conflicts, you will be fine. It actually makes the essay easier to write.
Not sure how hard you get penalised for this but rip.
-
Assessors mark holistically, relating student performance to the published criteria and ranking students over the full range of marks available. Determination of the mark is assisted by the descriptors in ‘Expected qualities for the mark range’ (attached).
And before you ask, no, generally speaking, your assessor doesn't mark you on what you didn't talk about only what you did talk about.

No, it is not a similar topic. That 2015 topic openly claimed the play was about extremes of human emotion. To challenge, it you would have to mount the case that it was about extremes of human lack of emotion (Jason) or excessive use of pragmatism. That would have been a fair challenge, using the terms of the prompt or their alternatives.
It was inappropriate in that year for students to write, "No, it's actually about patriarchy". That is not engaging with the prompt.

1 mark.
Oh shit :'(
After 4+ hours after the English exam, I just realised I made a really huge mistake. I forgot to analyse the picture in section c :( am I stuffed? Will I lose many marks?
I'm so angry at myself. :(

Did anyone do Measure for Measure for section A? I did the second prompt about the duke achieving justice though manipulation and disguise, but i wasn't sure about my three arguments. :-\ :-\ If anyone else did this prompt, can you briefly outline your three arguments? Thanks

I did Measure for Measure for Section A, but was tossing up between the Duke question and the women one........both were different to what i was expecting. I know heaps of my friends did the women one because they felt the Duke question was very restrictive because it only focuses on his "disguise and manipulation". Eventually i did the Duke one. Out of curiosity what were your three arguments?

One more question guys.........i didn't write a conclusion for Section C. Will marks be deducted? If so how many? Is it still possible to score at least an 8-10 for that section? Pls help

Nope, a conclusion doesn't matter in Section C. :)
Definitely possible to still be scoring an 8-10 (provided your analysis is good), as it won't actually affect your marks.

A COPY OF THE EXAM.

Is anyone going to mention Mabo? I thought topic i. was pretty easy imo, could talk about lots as it was a 'discuss' prompt - talked about influence and guidance of Meriam culture, then Netta of course and finally the motivation drawn from the protectionist policies and paternalistic nature of the government through Killoran and basically how all of them kept Eddie on track and reminded him of his goal, etc. Not sure how everyone else felt though!
Also TC/YOW Comparative was reasonable, chose topic i. and talked about social structure, religious + superstitious beliefs and personal motivations as ideas explored by both authors with regards to victimisation and blame.
For Part C, I used the motto with the logo somehow, and used negative connotations with the black plastic bags and death as well as the smog-filled sky with pollution. Not sure however! Hope everyone is happy with how they went :)
-
Thank you, K888! Yeah, I'm hoping it isn't as bad as I recall.

just wanted to point out that the logo of the school was supposed to be ironic, as it represents the environment and is placed in a text that talks about littering and therefore juxtaposes with the pic of the rubbish

Can't help but disagree here. I don't think a school board, when deciding on a particular logo for a school, would decide on a particular image just to support an article the principal writes. However, I think you're well within your writes to incorporate the logo into your analysis as it may have had an effect on an audience. I'm not sure if this effect was ironic per se but yeah there's definitely something there to talk about.
Thank god English is over lol
-
Mate it isn't a real school. Of course the logo was formulated to be ironic. When you structure your section C you don't incorporate real school common sense... english is a stupid game and you have to play it.

Hi guys,
what happens if you didn't finish your essay? A lecturer came to our school and told us that you get a 1/10, despite the quality of the present written work. I wrote an intro and two really long body paragraphs (only the intro and the first were completely done, the last paragraph was a scrambled mess and I don't recall it sounding 'finished', I just tried to fit in as much textual knowledge as possible before the last five minutes were up) for the text response, I probably wrote 5-6 pages for those alone but I'm still not sure if it would suffice for an actual mark or whether it would be counted as 'incomplete'. Any help or advice??? Now I'm really panicking....

Hello!
Like I've written on previous posts, and as many other AN members have affirmed, there is no major issue with an incomplete essay. The fact that you were able to write 5-6 pages is an achievement in itself. It shows the examiners that you did have adequate textual knowledge, an overarching interpretation and well-justified arguments to support this. I highly doubt that an essay would only achieve 1/10 for this amount of writing. I've personally never heard of such a belief. By no means am I qualified to give potential marks out, but I don't think your essay (provided that it adequately hits the criteria- which it sounds like it does) would be out of the high range.
So please try and not to stress too much. I know this is easier said than done as a current year 12 student myself ;D You will be surprised with what you have achieved.

Big +1 to what clarke54321 just said! What that person told you just simply isn't true.
If you scroll back through the thread you'll find a few replies like this - you can definitely score highly without finishing your essays - there's a number of people on the forums who can attest to that!
What really matters is your ability to develop ideas, show your knowledge of the text and create a coherent analysis - if you can do that over a full essay, then great! But it's also okay if you show that over the course of an incomplete essay. There's not actually a box in the criteria that says "must have a completed essay"!
So yeah, moral of the story is: don't stress - you're not going to get a 1/10 for not finishing an essay, you can still even score in the 40s, and yeah, just the best thing to do is forget about it and enjoy your holidays! Sounds like you did a pretty good job, so I think you can be proud of yourself :)
