Don't forget to read books!As in Science books/magazines? Sounds good :).
As in Science books/magazines? Sounds good :).Yeah... I guess that'll do.
Your very committed for a year 8. With the right motivation and study routine you are more than capable of 99.95 :) good luckDunno about that haha. Doubt this would be anything like VCE :o. Love a good challenge though :P.
Anyone else trying to get 2015 entry into JMSS?HAHA!!! Good Luck man!! 2-3 hours per day is aboslutely fine to work with!! Hope to see you in 2015 :D
To prepare I think I'll try and squeeze in 2-3 hours of study a day and finish Year 9 Maths Curriculum as well as Year 9/10 Science stuff :). Going to be a lot of hard work haha.
Talk below! 8)
HAHA!!! Good Luck man!! 2-3 hours per day is aboslutely fine to work with!! Hope to see you in 2015 :DMe too! Everything in there looks so exciting ;D.
Hey I'm doing the jmss test this year as well for 2015.And no theres no verbal reasoning test , theirs numerical , mathematics and the two writing pieces .
But i'm really confused as to what i should study for science, should it really be year 10 standard?
The test are
-numerical reasoning
-reading comprehension for science????
-verbally reasoning
-two test.
Im really confused as to what type of writing it is like analytical or persuasive like macrob and narrative or something.
And does anyone have a general idea as to what the cut off mark is? or are there none. Because last year when i did the Macrob test i started to stress because of it. I would assume it's more low than the mel/macrob ones.
Can anybody help?

oh ok, so theres no reading comprehension or english. YES!Probably depends if you are science or literacy orientated. But according to friends, the JMSS is easier than the MH test (For each respective year level), so it should be the same with MacRob.
Is it harder than the MacRob test though? ???
Well, you peep's pov.
ok :)How much is studying sooo much? Haha :)
That makes the test sound not that bad.
:D
MacRob was my first big test and seeing 3000 people got me nervous :(
and theres probs around 1100 at the jmss.
I'm gonna study soooooo much
Hello everyone!Welcome to the forums Rosalie :)
This is my first post on ATARNotes, so I am quite new at this. Apologies if I make any mistakes.
HermioneGranger29, just to answer your question, like what Hannibal said, it does depend on what sort of subjects you are more inclined to. If you are aware that you are proficient in mathematics and/or science, then perhaps these tests will be easier for you as opposed to Mac.Rob/MHS.
I wish you the best of luck in sitting these selective-entry tests.
Thank-you Hannibal, :). I am not sure just yet, still considering applying. How else do you plan on preparing for the exams?You should definitely at least give it a go, apparently everyone is really keen to learn... A lot different to my school haha. My Preparation:
Yes, I agree - glad to see that Year 9's are finally starting to contribute to these forums, ;D.
:D, I understand your perspective - as I previously mentioned, I am considering applying.I would like to say Civil or Electrical Engineering, but I am sure my opinion will change in the future.
It sounds as if you have a fantastic plan for yourself. As I posted earlier to HermioneGranger29, I wish you the best of luck in sitting for the exam.
Out of curiosity - what sort of career would you pursue in Science/Engineering if the opportunity was given to you? ???
Sounds interesting, :). As for myself, preferably biomedical engineering or electrical engineering. Although, I am keeping my options open and may consider something completely different.Biomedical engineering, interesting :). My current school is brilliant, and will continue to be so if I don't get into JMSS however my cohort lack interest in learning. The class average is probably a C and I don't feel like I am pushed enough.
Also out of curiosity - why did you choose to apply for JMSS (other than the fact that it caters for your interests)?
Biomedical engineering has always appealed to me - it has the potential to improve a human's quality of life. :)Well... Nearby as in a 20 minute drive and an hour with public transport (Because of no direct route between Blackburn and Clayton - Sucks a lot <_>). I personally prefer Maths > Sciences purely due to my interests, and there seems to be a few Maths/Physics electives.
Having a school nearby is always an advantage, I suppose. I think JMSS offers fantastic opportunities in numerous fields such as astrophysics and enhanced mathematics which may not be as common in other schools.
Although, EBBS does seem promising. Would you apply there in Year 11 and 12 if, say, you didn't secure a place at JMSS?
Why thank-you - as do you! ;D
Melbourne High was a no no, a cousin of mine went there and found there to be a lot of selfish, arrogant folks.
Well... Nearby as in a 20 minute drive and an hour with public transport (Because of no direct route between Blackburn and Clayton - Sucks a lot <_>)
I'm hoping you had many other reasons other than a single anecdote, because if not then that's a big wasted opportunity.Mmm, I do regret it from time to time. Although I never really took fancy to MH - Went to the campus and everything, didn't feel right. Could be a mistake... But oh well. Yeah, I only looked at trains from Blackburn to Richmond, then another line to Clayton. Buses would appear to be quicker :D.
There is a direct 703 bus from Blackburn Station to Monash Clayton, takes ~30-35mins? Source: I take it everyday on my way to hospital.
I agree with you - I do prefer Mathematics over Science.Hmm interesting, I had a light read. It seems a bit too rigorous with the subject selection. Unless you want to do the Asian 5 with Biology + EI in Year 11 looking at the subject outline scares you :o. There is a lot more flexibility with JMSS IMO, with the availability of a more diverse range of subjects. Trying to find the balance between high intensity subjects and life-experience activities is certainly important. Are you planning to do the Asian 5?
Have a look at the link below, this website (takes you to UHS) informs you about EBSS:
http://www.unihigh.vic.edu.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=115&Itemid=154 (copied from pi's forum - thank you for sharing the link!)
I am not sure as to whether I should apply in the future. As I previously mentioned, I may change my mind in the near future.
Lastly, out of curiosity - why do you believe that you would perform horribly in a Reading Comprehension test?
:D - Not entirely sure just yet, how about your plans?Ehhh... Lots of choices to make haha. Probably Methods, Specialist, Biology, Physics, English and something else... (EI, Physiology, Accounting, Economics, Uni Subject) :). But tons of time to shift those plans around :P. I am a bit disappointed in the quality of my cohort at school, they are all cool people, but very few of them actually care about studies. How about your school?
I understand your point here - I don't have natural ability in English either, :-\
My apologies for the late reply - I have been quite occupied for the past week.Hey Rosalie,
I agree - I am quite uncertain as to what choices I will make in the upcoming years. Accounting and Economics seem interesting, so I would consider including those two subjects. My school is quite diverse - others seem flippant towards their work, while there are some that are quite dedicated.
Honestly, I couldn't choose one subject at this stage. I find both English and Maths quite enjoyable - hopefully that will remain the same throughout the next few years, :).
Which test do you believe you will be able to complete the most proficiently when applying for JMSS? ???
I'm going for it as well... really stuck on what I need to study! Oh, and I'm really interested in medicine, and you know, doctor stuff. So is JMSS the right place to go to if im interested in that stuff? Any tips on for the test?If you are interested in medicine then the school is probably right for you :).
Hey!!!Hey Skgun!
Im also trying out for JMSS this year for entry into year 10 2015!
Yeah its a lot of study, I'm trying to study heaps bout 3-4 hours a day. :P :-[
The people on Atar Notes that attend JMSS are so much help and are really great too! ::)
Keep in touch! Good Luck and maybe we could discuss study techniques/material with each other?
Haha ;D :D :) ;)
Hi guys ok im new to this atar thing but anywaysHey wulfahh,
yes i went to the information night! I spoke to heaps of teachers and students there, including the principal :)
They were all quite helpful tbh
for me, i find myself studying a lot on one day, then a little bit the next. I'm not very consistent with it but i make sure i dont go without a day of at least 2 hours. even if the two hours is just revising over what ive learned. I like to use my siblings too. I have a younger brother who i tend to teach about thing things ive learned etc, i remember it so much better that way.
I wanted to ask, does anyone know how many students JMSS will invite for an interview?

Anyone else trying for JMSS this year? Come on guys, join the conversation!Come out of lurking! The only one of us that bites is Sarith (Only a little bit though ;o) :P
We can disscuss things and help eachother ;D
By any chance, did anyone go to the exhibition night?Yep, was pretty cool eh? That JMSS graduate at Med School was sooo cool haha, I was surprised to see a Med student like that :P. The principal and students weren't too bad either. Anyone coming to a school tour?

Just a bit ;)3:30PM... Not very convenient :(
Wow, exhibition night must have been good! Hahaha. What times are the school tours. Hopefully its a convenient time, so I can go!
Alright, so im kinda new here too (look at this awesome first post) and i'm gonna try out for jmss this year too. :)Firstly, nice name and avatar :P.
Sadly for me, i didnt go to information night and also didnt go to exhibition night, so itd be pretty cool if you guys tell me about it.
And it'd be pretty nice to share some study techniques and materials.
~~~~look at that great name and the avatar.~~~~
Firstly, nice name and avatar :P.
If you didn't come along to the information night don't worry, there was nothing in there that you can't find out from the website. There's plenty of people that didn't attend, so don't worry :). Perhaps try to book a tour as well? I have one next week, and you could probably ask as many questions as you have :P. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss stuff!
Best of luck :D
Hey guys, I'm gonna be trying out for JMSS this year too.
Does anybody have any idea what the interviews will be like? The tests seem pretty straightforward (from what I've heard), but the interviews not so much.
Oh man :/ i didn't went to their exhibition night :(( HAHAH yea, i am really committed with the JMSS exam. I wasn't successful for selective last year and like i realised that i kind of had a passion with science.For Science I suppose you just have to cover as much stuff as possible in the time we have left, it's tough since we are pretty much in for the unknown :P. 4 weeks to go... Arggh, I feel like I'll never have prepared enough.
HAHAHA what was the exhibition on about?? was it any interesting?
BTW, how's everyone going with their last minute revision?? Mine been alright i guess HAHA
Any suggestion on what I should study??
ATM, i just doing a bit of bio on cells and like the different systems....
AND OFC, best of luck everyone :DDDDD
Hey Rilin,
I reckon worry about the interviews after the test haha, we have like 1-2 months to work on our soft talk :P. I'll probably just read about the latest scientific news and quote a few scientists here and there ;). What preparation have you done for the test so far?
Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss in detail, and good luck :).
Hey, yeah I've been studying about 1-2 hours a day and doing extra exercises in Maths and answering extension questions in science.. I've been reading a few science magazines here and there, but not much else.Nah haha, even though I study for roughly the same time, most of it is watching documentaries on YouTube, rarely do I do textbook questions/practise tests :P. And I think I'm the only person who isn't doing Year 10 maths in school atm, everyone seems to be doing acceleration (Crazy smart :)))
You've probably been studying way more than me haha.
I kinda find it interesting how everyone is online now LOLHaha yeah, one by one people are crawling out of the shadows ;). By the way, was your tour last week? How'd it go?
wow everyone have studied so much and there is me sobbing in the corner because I haven't done anything yet
I watched a few based on Richard Hammond engineering connection, but then i realised his shows were more likely for entertainment purposes.
I'll have to bookmark these so I can watch them later :Dyea my school didn't applied for it aswell so like i also missed out :/
btw, is anybody else doing the big science comp this year?
https://www.asi.edu.au/site/programs_bigscience.php
Unfortunately I'm not :'(Oh okay haha, I have one booked next week, should be fun :D.
Just missed out on the due date haha
Thanks Hannibal for those links :D
Yeah it was last week! The tour was pretty fun actually :P but I see a few friends from school which makes me feel kinda even more nervous I guess... You get to walk around the school and hear the students and teachers explaining! It was a really good experience I guess! You should go to one some time this week!
Here's a few that I really like:MAN Thankyou so much!!!! lol i end up watching one based on machine yesterday and made heaps of notes!!!!
Best of Luck everyone :))
Hey guys! ;D I'm in year 9 and I am going to try out for JMSS too.......a little nervous though, haha! :PJust do your year level Science and Maths and you'll be fine. Also ask Hannibal for some advise, he sounds like a smart guy :D
I haven't done much studying so far......I know, I should really start studying, but do you think I will have enough time to prepare for the exam??? :o
It really would be amazing to be a John Monash student! I really enjoy science and right now I'm participating in this competition called "Science Talent Search", I am thinking of making a working model or an invention.
I am trying hard in science and maths this year but I really need help on what to study for the JMSS exam :o
Is the maths really hard? and for the numerical reasoning, does it involve lots of number patterns and logic questions?
Also for the science part, are the questions mostly basic stuff and general knowledge or is it complicated and hard?
Any help will be very much appreciated!! ;Dl
Hey Hannibal! thnx so much for the info ;D I really want to go on a tour, I'm pretty sure there is one next Tuesday and Thursday, are you coming?Yep, I'm coming on the Tuesday one :). For Science I recommend writing three documents for Chemistry, Biology and Physics, and splinting those documents into different areas. This way, whichever topic comes up on the exam, you will be somewhat prepared for it :P. I go to the JAC preparation course and it's rubbish, save your money if you are thinking about going haha :P. For the Science comprehension they use articles from Wikipedia as text, and its insanely difficult (Getting 30% in Maths is a High Average). Apparently Hendersons is decent though so give it a go ;).
Oh and yes, I'll try to read ahead in my science textbook and hopefully be prepared for the exam...
by the way, today is the 21st, so we have exactly 1 MONTH left!!! :o better start studying hard!
My friend goes to Hendersons and she says it's really good and that they give you actual practise tests, she told me that we might have to know about evolution and types of energy. I'm going to study them, just to be on the safe side :)
For anyone that's interested: http://www.sciencevictoria.com.au/sts/index.htmlThanks man!! :D
You could start on the project after the test, and could use it to reinforce your passion for science in the interview. I've done it the last few years and it's not too difficult to win an award of some sort :P.
Let the studying begin. Oh, and may the odds be ever in your favour! :PHaha nice one :D. Anyone feel like this is the hardest they've worked for something ever?
Haha nice one :D. Anyone feel like this is the hardest they've worked for something ever?yep, haha i'm on the same boat!!!
Hey guys,Haha I'm panicking about the interview as well. Joining all sorts of random competitions and activities so I can put it on my portfolio and brag about it :D. Come to the Tuesday tour if you can ;). And I agree with you on JAC, the maths component is literally mental torture for me :(. Last time I scored 17%, and you could score higher by picking C for every question ???.
1 more month till the JMSS exam :o
I am really nervous right now and am not sure whether I am ready or not haha! I have studied the whole year 9 textbook and going through year 8. I went through a bit of year 10 too. For maths, I have covered year 9 curriculum (well) and year 10 curriculum (roughly).
For Numerical Reasoning, I like patterns and sequences and stuff (haha)! I am just worried about timing. I asked a few mates who attend JMSS that I met on AN about the timing, and apparently it is easily "do able" in 30 seconds. Haha, so hopefully we find it that way too!
I attend JAC (really hard, only getting 30%-50% every test, which is still high compared to others :o) and Hendersons (great!!!)
Just in case I get an interview: I joined the SRC, Green Team, Library Monitor and Home Group Captain for some bragging material! haha! Also, I am doing my best in Maths and Science and so far my average is over 90% for both subjects!
How is everyone else feeling about this exam? Anyone got any tips and techniques to use for the exam or on the day? Or to study!?
I know I gotta stay calm and breathe and stuff like that but any others? Hahaha ;D
I might be coming for a JMSS school tour on Tuesday or Thursday if there are spots open!
Please PM for anything really!! Or comment! ;D ;D
I'm strangely excited but nervous as fk! :'(
I really wanna get in haha! Anyone else feeling like this?
Am I the only person not attending JAC or Hendersons? I understand how useful they can be, but the price is too much for my family. Is it really worth doing if I want to get into jmss?Don't worry about it, JAC is way more difficult than the actual exam, the only real advantage is having exposure to testing (60 once the program is done). But honestly, there are plenty of resources on the internet that are just as effective, and I would rather work in my textbook than do JAC testing -.-. Apparently Hendersons is good, but I don't have enough time haha. I'm pretty sure the majority of people who apply won't be doing tuition, so you're fine! And if you are comparing it to normal tuition, it really depends if you are a self-learner or structured-learner :).
Am I the only person not attending JAC or Hendersons? I understand how useful they can be, but the price is too much for my family. Is it really worth doing if I want to get into jmss?man dw, i go to jmss prep course at jac, and like the test is so freaken hard!!
I know how it feels, but I'm sure we'll all make it! Just a few more weeks to go so we have to give it everything we have and not have any regrets :).
Am I the only person not attending JAC or Hendersons? I understand how useful they can be, but the price is too much for my family. Is it really worth doing if I want to get into jmss?bro, I can guarantee you that you are defineatly NOT the only one. Many people have previously got in without attending tuition. Tuition is just a small benefit for people who are doing it. JAC is rubbish :D but Hendersons is actually good. However nothing they teach you is too new or complex. Honestly, you must complete your year 9 Maths book and fully understand it and be able to do application type questions. Also skim over year 10 with Quadratics, Algebra, Lineae Equations and Parabolas. Just be familiar with year 9. For science get a basic (too expert is not needed) knowledge of the year 8 and 9 textbook. When I say basic, you dont need to know EVERY single word. You must understand key things and maybe take notes? Watch some documentries that Bullet and Hannibal have put up kindly. Do a lot of practise tests! They are key really, as well as confidence. Do ICAS ones too to prepare for science.
For anyone that's interested: http://www.sciencevictoria.com.au/sts/index.htmlHey,
You could start on the project after the test, and could use it to reinforce your passion for science in the interview. I've done it the last few years and it's not too difficult to win an award of some sort :P.
Hey shinkaze! I haven't really studied much either, but if you need some help: for maths I was told to go over most/all of the year 9 textbook and maybe a little bit of year 10 maths. And for science, practise writing some prac reports or science essays. I was also told by my friend who goes to hendersons to study evolution, body systems eg. respiratory, digestive system etc. Oh and you might want to go over your year 9 science textbook just to be sure ;D We still have a month, so don't worry :)hey, um what kind of mathematics year 10 things should we study?
Hey,- DAV Debating
What kind of competitions have you entered to show of in your interview?
Please send links ;D ;D
And PM or something about what it is about (each comp) and what you must do?!
Wow thanks! I practically skipped the whole Year 9 maths and yeah now I have to catch up! So yeah I guess I'll need to work on it soon anyway...Yeah, sometimes studying sucks (Especially when sick/in pain). I find listening to inspirational music helps me at times... Keep it instrumental though, so it doesn't distract you. Changing the environment also helps a bunch, even something simple like changing the room in which you study. Also going to the local library if you have one nearby, I like to study there because I can get a bite to eat from the shops, and can do homework at the same time :D.
Yeah thank you! However, I'm feeling so unmotivated most of the time and I always find excuses like: I don't know what topic to write on or I'm just too busy now to procrastinate :/
Ahh okay thanks! Aww biology stuff? I hate biology...not to mention that the contents in biology is very dry to me...
Ahahaha okay I will thanks!
Wow thanks! I practically skipped the whole Year 9 maths and yeah now I have to catch up! So yeah I guess I'll need to work on it soon anyway...I gotta strange feeling the science essay (one of them) will be in Physics. Which I am happy in! Haha, I dunno!
*prays*motion*prays* :)hahaha....exactly ;D ;D ;D
hahaha....exactly ;D ;D ;DWhat topics would you guys like to see for the essays?
What topics would you guys like to see for the essays?LOL i can tell most of us been studying the same topic!!! haha yea for some reason i prefer physic over chemistry... LOL but then i don't know why but i don't really like studying plants ://
I would like Physics - light, force, electricity
Biology - Cells, system (organs and tissues too), plants (anything),
Chemistry - chemical reactions, periodic table, endothermic/exothermic things! haha
There are more...I just cant think right now!
For me its Chemistry (Easy) > Physics (Interesting) > Biology (Eww, plants)YAY we're about the same!! Except I probably covered Chemistry more in my school and I actually don't find Chemistry that easy...( a friend tried to explain some molar mass things from Year 11 since last month and until now I still don't get it)
C'mon, don't be shy guys.Uhmm I'm never shy. Today I got complained by the teacher for being too loud for oral presentation...
I gotta strange feeling the science essay (one of them) will be in Physics.Don't mind Physics at all I guess it's alright...not as bad as biology (I actually dislike it)
Guys, just curious would you guys say that Evolution is more likely philosophy instead of Science???Well 'Natural Selection' is the scientific way of saying it, and it's generally considered to be correct :P. I'm mostly writing this as a test of my knowledge, but feel free to read it if you want:
hahaha the reason why i make this assumption is because like there are really any 'Scientific Reasoning/ Evidence' behind it??
LOL so, what do you guys think??
Well 'Natural Selection' is the scientific way of saying it, and it's generally considered to be correct :P. I'm mostly writing this as a test of my knowledge, but feel free to read it if you want:your gonna get into JMSS
Evolution is a process that occurs through natural selection, and is how a species transforms over time. An example is a moth with a black dot. Thousands of years ago, the species had no dot, and lived in a tropical rainforest where it could camouflage easily. The rainforest had a serious fire a few hundred years later however, and the majority of trees were charred and black. While this happened, there was a genetic mutation in the DNA of this moth, that caused a slight change in one area of the wing, that made it ever so slightly black. Because this moth camouflaged more easily into the black environment than its other variations, it tended to survive more than its counterparts. Because of this, more random mutations occurred, and over time, a black spot formed. The moths with black spots survived for longer than the moths of the same species that didn't, which resulted in it being able to pass on its genes more easily. This is natural selection in action.
Is that correct? ;o
your gonna get into JMSSTotally agree man!!!!!
Well 'Natural Selection' is the scientific way of saying it, and it's generally considered to be correct :P. I'm mostly writing this as a test of my knowledge, but feel free to read it if you want:
Evolution is a process that occurs through natural selection, and is how a species transforms over time. An example is a moth with a black dot. Thousands of years ago, the species had no dot, and lived in a tropical rainforest where it could camouflage easily. The rainforest had a serious fire a few hundred years later however, and the majority of trees were charred and black. While this happened, there was a genetic mutation in the DNA of this moth, that caused a slight change in one area of the wing, that made it ever so slightly black. Because this moth camouflaged more easily into the black environment than its other variations, it tended to survive more than its counterparts. Because of this, more random mutations occurred, and over time, a black spot formed. The moths with black spots survived for longer than the moths of the same species that didn't, which resulted in it being able to pass on its genes more easily. This is natural selection in action.
This is natural selection in action.
Guys, just curious would you guys say that Evolution is more likely philosophy instead of Science???
hahaha the reason why i make this assumption is because like there are really any 'Scientific Reasoning/ Evidence' behind it??
LOL so, what do you guys think??
Big no at the bolded spots.Thanks so much! Really helpful :). Need to do some more work on selection pressure, not entirely sure what that is. And sorry I don't think I was overly clear with the mutations, they didn't happen as a result of the fire, they happened randomly.
You have to remember that genetic variation ALWAYS exists in a population before the selection pressure (in your case, a fire) is applied. Mutations are always random and they don't just only occur at a specific time. The fire does not cause mutations to just appear. Before the fire, there must already be moths with black dots.The selective pressure only "selects" for it and increases its frequency.
If you want, Darwin's Finches are a particularly good example of how natural selection contributes to the formation of different species in different environments.
It's pretty much fact that evolution happened, it is NOT at all philosophy. Much of Biology is focused on our descent from a common ancestor - it can be seen in genetics, cell biology, anatomy, physiology, i.e pretty much everything.
Hello Shen,I spotted it in the Year 10 Science book, so it probably won't be on the test (Because then 3/4 of the people doing it would be confused)
then would you encourage us young folks to study upon Evolution before our JMSS exam? When does school actually teach student's evolution?? My year 9 science textbook never mentioned anything about evolution or Natural selection.
Hello Shen,I was told at Hendersons to briefly learn about evolution. Just like Charles Darwin, fossils, why they evolved and yeah just basics. Check your school library for brief books! You dont need to know much like genetics im pretty sure. Learn briefly about DNA, chromosomes, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), RNA and the structure. Also learn that is carries genetic code for the body! ;D
Hey guys. I've been told by my English teacher that I might need to practise writing essays a bit more. Do you guys have any science-based topics that I could write about? I'm a little stuck on ideas at the moment. :/Try the last years topic: Explain to a four year old how to remove iron fillings and sand from water!
Try the last years topic: Explain to a four year old how to remove iron fillings and sand from water!
Explain the structure and functions of an animal cell.
Or these ones: Compare the differences in acceleration with mass and size, use 2 different objects.
Which science field interests you the most and why?
Which science discovery interests you the most and why?
Explain to a year 5 why an object does not fall or slip when in rest
I ended up talking about inverse toilets and Space nappies! :P
Thanks for all of these. This will probably keep me busy for a little while :D
So I'm currently on nothing and it would be great if someone could give me a timeline on how I should start things please ( I'm really really horrible at these stuff- I'm so bad until I barely hand in homework on time so any help with when I should do stuff be great!)Hey,
Should I start going through Year 9 science first or go back to year 7 first?
So I'm currently on nothing and it would be great if someone could give me a timeline on how I should start things please ( I'm really really horrible at these stuff- I'm so bad until I barely hand in homework on time so any help with when I should do stuff be great!)Here's a few suggestions, feel free to use it as food for thought :).
Thanks for all the help! Does anyone have the year 9 maths textbook? Because I don't.Probably haha, assuming you'll probably need one sometime in the future. I recommend Essentials, because Maths Quest sucks ;).
Is it worth to buy a new year 9 textbook for this?
Smart? Not even close LOL
Does anyone know if the maths test is 60 questions in 30 minutes, or something else? Hate answering questions that fast - a slight slip in your working out and you can screw everything up :PYeah.
Hannibal,Thanks, thats probably right haha!
Yes, the Mathematics test is 60 questions with 30 minutes to complete the entire paper.
One would assume that you require only 30 seconds per question, nonetheless, some questions may take 15 seconds and others 2 minutes. Generally, the amount of time you take depends on the difficulty of the question (usually - correct me if I am wrong here - the last one or two questions on the paper take the longest amount of time).
Best of luck,
rosalie.brown.
Cheers SKGUN and Rosalie :) - Looks like I have some work to do on timing haha.Me too man! :(
Me too man! :(I've heard of that strategy before, although I feel like I'll be wasting valuable seconds in doing so, which I could be answering questions in. Instead I think that when you come across a question that you are stumped upon or know you cannot answer, use the star method, rather than doing it beforehand. Idk though, might not work for you :P.
My technique is, when first going over the questions that are easy and then marking a star and guessing the questions that are hard. Them when I finish the easy questions (probs 20/60) I will go to the rest in the remaining minutes!
I'm not very good with chance, so I have a question about filling in everything at the end. Would it increase your chance to say only fill in a single letter, or to do it by random or a pattern?Doing one letter for each guessed question would result in at least a few being correct (Unless you do less than like 6), but doing different letters can result in none or more than a few being correct :P. Personally I shade in bubbles that haven't been shaded in that much, like a D if there hasn't been a few of those recently ;). The math behind it though, not entirely sure.
Me too man! :(
Oh Man....Damn, that sucks! Luckily my school has a trimester system, which means more reports and exams, but not during the JMSS exam time :). In fact straight after the exam we have a week long camp, followed by two weeks of holidays :D.
School exam is coming up and like JMSS is just weeks away :/
hahaha best of luck everybody!!!
Damn, that sucks! Luckily my school has a trimester system, which means more reports and exams, but not during the JMSS exam time :). In fact straight after the exam we have a week long camp, followed by two weeks of holidays :D.hahaha of course man :)) Have to rest well man!!
Still 4 weeks though, that's half your summer holidays! Best of luck to everyone, and I'm sure we all have the potential to do well. By the way, is anyone planning on taking the Friday before the exam off? ;)
My Grade 1 Achievement Award :D.Haha wow. You gonna ace that part of the Interview. I dont have any ICAS that aren't participation except a distinction I got in year 3 >:( Haha, I didnt really try on them but now I realise that I should have :( Anyways, I would put, my Leadership badges, Sporting medals/trophies (pics), year 6 Graduation Nominations for Maths, English and Ducks (all around academic award), year 6 leadership course award, year 7 NAPLAN (I got good as ;D ), Report (however most are C's :( ) and thats all I can think of. Its not a very effective portfolio so that is why I need to join some programs where they give out certificates. Anyone know any that are free to join?
Nah haha, ICAS certificates (That aren't participation), reports (That don't contain D's), LP certificates, STS awards, leadership badges, sports awards, debating stuff, music certificates, scholarship letters and service to school awards. Pretty much anything that isn't old, is colourful and looks impressive :P. How about you? And yeah haha, although I'd rather not do a full day of study before the exam, maybe just some light reading and revision :)
By the way, going on the tour tomorrow, should be a blast (Might take the day off too ::))
By the way, is anyone planning on taking the Friday before the exam off? ;)
I got this award in year 6 for being the community student of the year or something. That should probably go on my portfolio.LOL then should I add my ICT award from primary school as well?? Its kind of special to me, thinking that I was the only one who was nominated with this award. Hahaha dont forget about your SRC badges!!
Btw, why are we talking about the interview when the test is more important at this stage?
I got this award in year 6 for being the community student of the year or something. That should probably go on my portfolio.Haha yeah but if you do get offered an interview, they will notify you like 3-5 days before it so you do not have much time to prepare. Early, like now, you have time to join comps and programs!
But yeah, if you ace the test you only have to prove that you are human, haha, I doubt from there certificates would actually matter ;).
Certificates would generally help when trying to get in, but I think showing your love for science and showing them that you are the right person for the school would help you more at the interview.Hahaha i totally agree man!! Especially answering the questions the interviewers will ask in a detailed manner!!! LOL and my friend who got into JMSS 2 yrs ago also said that you should also work on your level of confidence, because they want to see if you actually know your stuff!!
Because pretending like I am going to make the interview gives me hope :P.Hahaha yeah! :D It gives me hope too haha 8)
G'Luck everyone, but for now let's just worry about the written exam XD
Yeah XDNot sure if I mentioned this here earlier, but teaching science to an imaginary class with a whiteboard really helps me to remember the concepts. I find that reading and listening doesn't get absorbed into my head, and writing is a little strenuous.
Once I finish completing all of our assessment tasks for my mid semester report, I'm going to be going into hardcore study mode for the test. Does anybody have any good study methods (apart from the one Hannibal mentioned a few posts back I think)
Has anyone else been on the JMSS tour? ;)The tour was alright haha, I was thinking about taking photos but was a tad scared :P. But yeah, it's a massive three storey building, with interwining stairs and gaps in between the levels with rails, sorta like a multi-leveled shopping centre :P. Pretty much all the classrooms were open spaces, and the science labs were decent as well. There aren't any bells though lol, which is a bit strange ;). The students that took us were all pretty nice too, answered any questions you had.
Unfortunately, there was no more spots left, so I missed out :'(
Because my friend who went there said that there is about 50 people in a class or something :-\
Also, were the classrooms big? Because my friend who went there said that there is about 50 people in a class or something :-\Hahah i have a few of my friends that goes to selective school (mainly MHS and a few Nossal) and they told me that yea... every selective school have big class because they want their students to be more independent
And yeah, the classrooms were pretty big (They had no walls actually...), and they said that it catered for 50 kids in a class, with two teachers. Personally I would prefer smaller classes because of less distractions, but oh well. But most importantly... They actually have microwaves that students can use! :D
Hannibal,
Some government schools are structured in this manner - they often have an entire room that caters for around 50 - 75 students (greater in some cases) and they may have smaller surrounding rooms that cater for perhaps, 10 - 15 students.
Ultimately, while I too disagree with this sort of classroom environment - if you can work solidly in that sort of atmosphere (i.e. ignoring distractions), then you would be able to work / study in any environment.
Also, to rest of you: Rilin, Fizzybubbles, SKGUN11 and waftj, best of luck on the JMSS exam! ;D
rosalie.brown.
Hannibal,Yeah I suppose, it prepares you for university :). And same haha, good luck with the exam :D.
Hey guys! ;DHey Fizzy,
Does anyone know the structure of a science essay? Because I have no clue, haha :P
is it just an intro, three paragraphs and a conclusion?? and is it supposed to be a discussion piece?
Hey Fizzy,Hey guys, do any of you have an links to practice mathematics exam apart from the DEECD one?? LOL thanks :)
Not sure if there is a formal structure you have to use, but currently I'm trying to cram as much information as possible into my practise essays. 3-6 body paragraphs are what I aim for, with an introduction and conclusion if I can come up with something historical/interesting :P. But yeah, feel free to do what you want, because it isn't a normal 'essay' so to speak :).
Hey guys, do any of you have an links to practice mathematics exam apart from the DEECD one?? LOL thanks :)I found this one a few days ago, not sure if it's any good or not :P - http://www.nap.edu.au/verve/_resources/Example_Test_Numeracy_Y9_calc.pdf
I found this one a few days ago, not sure if it's any good or not :P - http://www.nap.edu.au/verve/_resources/Example_Test_Numeracy_Y9_calc.pdfHahaha thanks Hannibal :) However, they do seem a lot easier than JAC practice exam and perhaps even the DEECD one!! LOL i guess it's better than nothing.
Also the non-calculator version - http://www.nap.edu.au/verve/_resources/Example_Test_Numeracy_Y9_non_calc.pdf
And this is NAPLAN stuff, but it might be helpful in increasing speed... https://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/naplan-numeracy-yr9.html
Hahaha thanks Hannibal :) However, they do seem a lot easier than JAC practice exam and perhaps even the DEECD one!! LOL i guess it's better than nothing.Yeah NAPLAN is quite easy. Just work on timing with those exams and don't expect questions that easy on the actual exam. Apparently some of the worded questions (application type) are kind of similiar.
Can anyone explain what kind of essays are expected from us for science comm and science interest? like what kind of stuff should i put in there? coz thats probably my weakest point. Besides the portfolio.Others, please correct me if i am wrong :D
Science Communication can be a procedure/practical report, so familiarise yourself with the format. For Science Interest don't bother with a structure, just cram as much information as you can in 30 minutes, because that's probably that they are looking for :P. Do a few practise ones if you want, really makes you feel confident :D.What is the format you are using for science communication? ;)
What is the format you are using for science communication? ;)Title, Name, Partners, Date, Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Results, Conclusion :P.
Title, Name, Partners, Date, Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Results, Conclusion :P.For this exam, since we have not actually done the prac it is Title, Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Results (a table) or expected results, Discussion (if I know rlly well what happened and want to show off my knowledge ;) ) and Diagram.
Of course, if it isn't a practical report then you don't use that. What's yours?
For this exam, since we have not actually done the prac it is Title, Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Results (a table) or expected results, Discussion (if I know rlly well what happened and want to show off my knowledge ;) ) and Diagram.Not last year but the year before, I believe the topic was 'Write a speech about climate change' for the science communication, I think :P. And yeah, discussion/diagram are really good additions, thanks :).
How would the procedure part go? I have never heard of that. I though one essay was always prac and the other was prior knowledge.
any1 no where to get good numerical reasoning practise tests that include solving patterns and stuff? :)http://www.practiceaptitudetests.com/numerical-reasoning-tests/?utm_expid=16273815-8.QLiNR83KROmVBv1x4Ch0kg.0&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com.au%2F
OMG!! SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT AND EXAMS are killing me :/ aiming to finish all my assignment by this weekend and gonna work work work :DDD
LOL anyone on the same boat as me??
thanks but I already knew those. Btw for the first one, how did you guys find it?It was a little tough to do it within the time limit, and a few questions I couldn't quite get my head around :P. I have a few assessments, but the majority of them were done a few weeks ago, so now it's downtime :).
Nah mate, we're done all the assignments (i think), had 2 exams today and a big few in 2 weeks.
It was a little tough to do it within the time limit, and a few questions I couldn't quite get my head around :P. I have a few assessments, but the majority of them were done a few weeks ago, so now it's downtime :).Yeah aha I felt the same. I dont the NR Exam is that difficult, it apparenlty has most patterns and number sequences! :D
Btw, 3 weeks to go!
Yeah aha I felt the same. I dont the NR Exam is that difficult, it apparenlty has most patterns and number sequences! :DHahaha dw, I'm on the same boat as you!!! Hahaha i'm not applying for NHS :/ lol best of luck man!!
Ikr, 3 WEEKS!!! ARRGGH.
Its wierd because I do not feel as good as I did last week about the exam. I mean like, last week I wouldnt of minded doing the test cos I felt kind of ready but today I feel not ready at all! :( Anyone else feel this way? Its probably the nerves. Plus I have NHS Exam in 12 days >:(
Hahaha dw, I'm on the same boat as you!!! Hahaha i'm not applying for NHS :/ lol best of luck man!!aha yeah! Thanks :D
LOL yea it's probably the nerves that makes us feel very anxious...
LOL and like it's weird how I have a few friends at school who are applying for JMSS as well seem really chilled out at school
Yeah, I'm on the same boat as all of you guys. I've got a history cat due on monday and a few other assessment tasks I need to get done on top of the study for JMSS.Yeah school comes first. I've finished everything and all the time is dedicated for study for JMSS. However, I always find myself procrastinating on AtarNotes or something >:(
Yeah school comes first. I've finished everything and all the time is dedicated for study for JMSS. However, I always find myself procrastinating on AtarNotes or something >:(
In three weeks :P. I'm in a mess with school at the moment haha (Not as much study for tests and effort for assignments), but I'm sure I'll recover eventually :).
It should all be over after this week for me. Hopefully I have enough time to recover and I do well enough that I get good grades on my mid year report. Isn't that important at the interview?Hahaha not necessary, because i have a good friend who got D's in his report but was still successful, because of how he spoke and his attitude towards science. LOL well for me personally, i know that my behaviour wouldn't be as good :///
Oh by the way, I feel more confident now. I went to this tutoring place called CTJAN, apperantly everyone who went there last year got at least an interview for JMSS, i did a practise exam and I got 2 Superiors (maths n science)!! I was quite thrilled! :DHaha good job man :)) LOL last week i got my results from JAC and apparently I only scored 36% in my maths and it was a superior!!!!! LOL it's because the test was like freaken hard!! LOL ask Hannibal about it.- HAHAHA
But I will feel more stressed soon. I guess feeling nervous is not that bad because it just shows how much you really care about getting into JMSS! :D But, I guess its distractive :(
Haha good job man :)) LOL last week i got my results from JAC and apparently I only scored 36% in my maths and it was a superior!!!!! LOL it's because the test was like freaken hard!! But then... my Science Reasoning was just average :/
Haha good job man :)) LOL last week i got my results from JAC and apparently I only scored 36% in my maths and it was a superior!!!!! LOL it's because the test was like freaken hard!! LOL ask Hannibal about it.- HAHAHAOpposite for me... Superior in Science Reasoning (76% ;oooo) and a tad above 20% in Maths for an average. Science Writing was 18/20 too, which is awesome because my teacher literally never gives out scores > 16 :D. I can endorse that it's so freaking hard though :(.
But then... my Science Reasoning was just average :/
Isn't that important at the interview?Nah buddy don't stress if your school marks aren't all perfect, because having strong communication skills, a nice extracurricular portfolio, and conveying your passion for science are all other things that are considered. I'm sure you'll smash it :).
Omg, ikr? The teacher is always saying that these questions will never come on the actual test? Why is it there then???? ARGHHH, i quit JAC so yeah haha, but I go to the friday revision one. Thats okay because, you do the essay and a revision sheet, which you CAN take home :P ::)
Good Luck everyone, 19 days! ???
I am kind of feeling ready. "Kind of"
oh and for the science essay part, I know we have to write something like a prac for one of them.I think science communication is the prac one. So you would do expected results (if it is so obvious) or results with just a table to record answers in. The rest are the same. I dont think you need to talk about independent and dependant variable?
I know how to write a prac, but how do you write a prac if you haven't done the experiment? I'm a tad confused :-\
And some of my friends are telling me that I have to include the independent and dependant variable in the prac or something....sorta confused about that as well, haha :P
oh and for the science essay part, I know we have to write something like a prac for one of them.Hahaha the examiners are not looking to see if you have the correct answer or not, but more likely how you structure your parc and yea, like what SKGUN11 said they are looking forward to read your table and discussion.- However i suggest 1 or 2 sentences for discussion would be more than enough :)
Discussion is your time to brag about what you know about what happens in this experiment! ;) ;D :D
G' Luck Fizzybubbles and all the other members on this forum :DD
aha yeah. Discussion is your time to brag about what you know about what happens in this experiment! ;) ;D :DLOL well that's only if you know your stuff man... LOL it be quite difficult if you do not have any prior knowledge about the topic.
LOL well that's only if you know your stuff man... LOL it be quite difficult if you do not have any prior knowledge about the topic.yeah haha! If you do though, it would be awesome! I dont think they expect you to know too much though, i dunno lol :-\
oh and for the science essay part, I know we have to write something like a prac for one of them.Yeah, do expected results, and approximate stuff. For example, a topic in JAC was 'Test the influence of temperature on the effectivity of baking bread'. I had no clue how to bake bread, so the ingredients for the bread was flour, olive oil, baking powder and a tray. It's the scientific talk and correct formatting that will net you marks though, so give it your best shot! :)
How is everyone going to structure their their science interest essay? Is it like TEEL?This is my format:
This is my format:Hahaha. I think so because this is where the examiners can mark our knowledge of english essays too, by correct structure. Idk, thats what I think.
Anyone else trying to get 2015 entry into JMSS?
To prepare I think I'll try and squeeze in 2-3 hours of study a day and finish Year 9 Maths Curriculum as well as Year 9/10 Science stuff :). Going to be a lot of hard work haha.
Talk below! 8)
Do we get marked on our actual writing skills as well as our scientific knowledge?It's an assessment of your ability to communicate scientific knowledge, so your writing skills will definitely come into it. That's in conjunction with your science knowledge, of course.
Drawing diagrams in the middle of each body paragraph could also help to give a more visual look to what you're trying to explain. Try include diagrams in your essays though, so long as they do connect with what you're saying ;)Hmm, thats actually a brilliant idea. Are you sure they do not penalise marks because it is incorrect structure? Or does not matter? Did you do that? So a diagram with each body? ;D
I have done the textbook chapter summaries now ;D ;D ;DVector quantity - A quantity that has both a numerical value and a direction, like 15km/h S.
Just recapping and making notes about Newtons laws now. Can someone explain to me clearly, in kiddy terms (lol), the difference between velocity, speed and acceleration. With meanings to each! Thansk so much 8)
Vector quantity - A quantity that has both a numerical value and a direction, like 15km/h S.thnks
Scalar quantity - A quantity that only has a numerical value, like 15km/h
Velocity - A vector quantity of how fast an object is traveling, and which direction it is travelling in
Speed - A scalar quantity of how fast an object is travelling, with only a numerical value
Acceleration - Change in velocity in a certain amount of time, can be written as *draw triangle* velocity
Why does everybody hate biology so much? I know it's nothing fancy, but it's quite interesting (at least the genetics and dissection side of things).Yeah, it's alright I suppose... I take back my ranting about plants though, did some study on the structure of leaves the other day and it was pretty interesting :P. So if plants/photosynthesis come on the test, I should survive ;).
Why does everybody hate biology so much? I know it's nothing fancy, but it can be quite interesting at times.Hahaha, I LOVE biology. Mainly microbiology. Really want to begin studying that, JMSS is perfect for that. Man, I really want to get in :-\
ooh, microbiology sounds very interesting indeed ;D I actually like biology a lot, haha and I watched aWe are doing a squid dissection next thursday!!! But unfortunately I am not here because of the NossalHS Exam >:(
short video about JMSS and they said that the year 10s will do some kind of squid dissection if you choose to do marine biology!!
Yay! sounds really exciting doesn't it? ;)
WHOOO PHARMA POWER!!!!! IF YOU HAVE THE TEACHER THAT I DID THIS YEAR, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE!! OUR EXAM IS BASICALLY A PRAC, AND THEN A SHORT MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAM!!!Sounds like fun :D.
Bump.hey man me too. I am strangely excited but also crazily nervous and pleading for more time haha!
Only two weeks to go! I'm so excited and nervous!
Bump.Yea... man :/ Finally i'm done and dusted with my assignments :DD
Yea... man :/ Finally i'm done and dusted with my assignments :DDElectricity is okay I suppose... But I would prefer:
lol hopefully the essay won't be too hard (Y)
So wish the essay topic is gonna base on Electricity HAHAHA SKGUN, are you familiar with that area???
yea and um... a tip to everyone is that reading science base articles would really help you with the essay part, as well as the essay!! G'Luck everyone!!
...Today I managed to knock off 5-6 hours in the library - LOL, relaxing now :)
5 - 6 hours? That's like 2-3 times more than I'm doing at the moment.Makes up for doing next to nothing during the week :P. By the way, has anyone been to Caulfield race course? I heard the testing rooms were enormous, really intimidating :S.
I feel really bad now. I'm going to go do some studying.
Where do you guys find information about electricity? I want to go in depth a little bit more, but there aren't many resources that say much other than circuits, Ohm's law and the like.
in the textbook is where is where I learnt itHahaha just to add on with SKGUN note, since you go JAC you have their science text book ofc. read and comprehend chapter 5 stuff- Hahaha hope this helps. LOL btw guys are u sure the venue is at Caulfield, cuz I actually have no idea where the test will be held at. LOL
Shit, I don't even study near as much for VCEHaha... You're probably way more productive ;).
Unfortunately I only do JAC maths, so I don't have the science book :(.I'm pretty sure every textbook in year 9 curriculum should have a chapter on electricity. Have a look in your school one!
I'm pretty sure every textbook in year 9 curriculum should have a chapter on electricity. Have a look in your school one!Just had a look haha, and there's one called energy transmission, which looks decent. Hopefully it goes as in depth as I would like :).
Hey there, I am quite nervous and I have no Idea on what to study for. I have been doing year 10 algebra, reading and watching science videos for the past month. But I feel like I gained no knowledge at all :'(. Can someone please tell me what to study/prepare for (science wise) :). Thank you!!Hey there godzerah! ;D according to what I've been told and what I've studied, start by splitting you science study into three sections, (biology, physics and chemistry).
But I feel like I gained no knowledge at all :'(. Can someone please tell me what to study/prepare for (science wise) :). Thank you!!its great that you have watched Science videos. You may not think you have learnt anything but if you found them interesting, most likely you have learned stuff but you cant think about it. If you get a topic about it, possibly you may remember some stuff and remember things that you didnt even know you knew! Haha. Best thing to do now, is go through your YEAR 9 maths and science textbook and get a good knowledge on the stuff. Maths, I reckon you will be fine knowing year 10 stuff, wow! Do some practise essays, icas science papers (F-H) and some maths stuff including patterns online. Good Luck, do not overstudy or stress! 12 more days :-\
Hey godzerah, welcome aboard! :)OMG Hannibal thankyou so much man!! No wonder you got a superior for Science in JAC!! Many of those topics i have touched them for the past month :o Hahaha much appreciated it!!
Honestly, just immerse yourself in science for the next two weeks and you will smash it :). Embark on as much stuff as you possibly can haha, I'll try and list a few recommended areas that I've done:
Biology:
- Cells
- Photosynthesis
- Respiration
- Body Systems
- Basic Anatomy
- Enzymes
- Evolution
- Classification
- Organic Molecules
Chemistry:
- Reactions
- Elements
- Periodic Trends
- Bonds
Good luck! :D
OMG Hannibal thankyou so much man!! No wonder you got a superior for Science in JAC!! Many of those topics i have touched them for the past month :o Hahaha much appreciated it!!No worries :).
G'Luck (lol but then i guess everyone would of agreed that we already learnt some of them from school)
No worries :).Nice... LOL I'm in the middle sorting my notes aswell!!!
I am in the process of retyping all my notes so I can absorb some of it into my head... And I may do it in a blog format so everyone can see. Will let everyone know if and when I get it fully functional :D (Hopefully soon haha)
Nice... LOL I'm in the middle sorting my notes aswell!!!Do you guys want to ask each other random questions, to improve general knowledge and indicate knowledge gaps? Try not to use google, but if you really don't know it's alright I suppose haha. I'll start with three questions I guess :P.
hahahaha, u are for sure a very nice man :D
I'll start with three questions I guess :P.zzzzoh..... I know the first one, haha teeth- because of it's enamel :DD
What's the hardest substance in the human body?
What are alpha particles in radiation?
What's entropy?
Do you guys want to ask each other random questions, to improve general knowledge and indicate knowledge gaps? Try not to use google, but if you really don't know it's alright I suppose haha. I'll start with three questions I guess :P.Firstly, brilliant idea. I am in!
What are alpha particles in radiation?
What's entropy?
zzzzoh..... I know the first one, haha teeth- because of it's enamel :DDHaha yeah :).
Firstly, brilliant idea. I am in!Yep! Feel free to ask a few too :).
What are alpha particles in radiation?
Alpha particles are the weakest form on radiation. It can be stopped by a small stack of papers.
Haha yeah :).aha wow, you know your stuff :P
An alpha particle is basically a helium nucleus emitted from a highly unstable atom/ion (Uranium), that is travelling pretty fast. However, even clothing is strong enough to block it, and the only danger it poses is that it can cause lung cancer if inhaled.
Entropy is basically the disorder/chaos in a system, and is the basis of thermodynamic laws 2&3.
Fire away a few questions :D.
Hahaha i got a few:#1 - Is it the cerebellum? I hate brain anatomy so I know little about it :P.
which part of the brain controls memory, personality and thoughts?
what does the liver produce?
which organ produces digestive enzyme??
LOL as you can tell i have been revising on Biology over the last few days...
Btw, any suggestions on what i should revise for Chemistry?? LOL the stuff on the internet is far too advanced :/
#1 - Is it the cerebellum? I hate brain anatomy so I know little about it :P. Hahaha man your very close, it is the cerebum. Cerebellum is the one that controls balance and coordination
#2 - The liver produces bile, which is then stored in the gall bladder. Yep
#3 - The pancreas produces digestive amalayse, lipase, nucleases and proteas I think... (Might be something else)Hahaha Correct :DD
WOW YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF!!!
Few more questions from me haha:
What is an example of an ionic bond?is that like something to do with cation and anion?? LOL suck with Chemistry
How can something become a temporary magnet?
What is the monomer unit of nucleic acids?
Thanks man! Here's the answers:
1 week to go... it's really worrying me that we have no idea what the topics for the writing pieces are... for those of you wanting to know how to write a "science essay" I had a look round and there is a really good format on Monash uni's site I have attached the basic format but there is loads of other tips and stuff! :) hope this helps good luckoh wow! Thanks heaps ;) :D
http://www.monash.edu.au/lls/llonline/writing/science/6.xml
Hows your study going? I'm prepared with maths and I revised over year 7, 8 and 9 science.
I'm pretty prepared with maths (just need to go over basic quadratics and geometry). Nowhere near your level with science though. I keep accidentally leaving my science book at school on the weekends :-\wow nice job. There are answers, you need to go to the main website.
I've been studying lots though. Planning to do 5-6 hours today :)
EDIT: I just this numerical reasoning practice test:
http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/parents/secondary/numericareasoningpractice.pdf
I did it under exam conditions and finished with about 30 seconds left. It's a shame there aren't any answers for it, or else I would be able to mark how well I went. At least I know that I'm able to finish the test in time. :)
Not worth while going back to Year 7 maths! Year 8 should be the furthest back to go! Parobola's will most likely be on the test haha! But the question might be like; "What equation does this graph represent" or vice-versa!
my studying is going quite well I have completely finished year 9 science and I'm half way through the year 10 curriculum.. think I might go back and revise year 8 again do you reckon it would be worth looking at year 7?? for maths does anyone know if we need to know parabola? I know there will be trigonometry, but I'm not sure about Parabola as it's considered year 10 in some maths textbooks.. :))Hahaha well i am quite confident with my maths (adveraged high-adverages- is that good enough?) from JAC
Hahaha well i am quite confident with my maths (adveraged high-adverages- is that good enough?) from JACyou should be fine with the maths maybe just go over some year 10 stuff just in case.. tbh i really don't think we will need VCE level stuff but if you have time look through it, just don't confuse yourself :) get a list of fun facts! I think if you can include some of those in your essay it will separate us from the average :))
and i have began my year 9 science revision... guys do you actually know how much i need to know for science?? Like should i look at some VCE Chem/Physics?? (LOL I can just scavenge off my elder brother)
Hahaha anyways, lets continue with the Science Trivia...
a. what is an endothermic reaction?
b. if this atom have 1 electron on the out most electron, which group does it belong to?
LOL ask away guys...
Hahaha well i am quite confident with my maths (adveraged high-adverages- is that good enough?) from JACa) When a reaction releases energy into the environment.
b) Group 1 Correct
Last time I'll ever have to undergo three hours of mental torture at JAC... Yay :D.HAHAHA YAY!! Just giving you the heads up, the science comprehension for test 20 is stupid. Tutor told us some of the questions do not have the right answers -_-
Few more questions:
What is the genus of homo sapien?
Does light travel slower in diamond?
What are three differences between light and sound?
A few more questions:Not sure about a)
a) What is the purpose of a fuse within every household?
b) Who mentioned about 'natural selection?'
c) Which Newton Law supports that you will keep moving if the car suddenly stops from constant acceleration and that the passenger wasn't wearing a seat belt?
A few more questions:a) purpose of a fuse is to control amps and prevent a possible fire
a) What is the purpose of a fuse within every household?
b) Who mentioned about 'natural selection?'
c) Which Newton Law supports that you will keep moving if the car suddenly stops from constant acceleration and that the passenger wasn't wearing a seat belt?
Not sure about a)
b) Someone with a last name of Darwin I think ;O
c) The third law, because it states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. As the car stops, you are sent flying forwards (I think)
You were right by the way! The first question was homo, with sapien being the actual species name :).
Few more :P:
#1 - Where does the gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happen in a plant?
#2 - What is the electron configuration of Fluorine?
#3 - What are periods and groups in the periodic table?
a) purpose of a fuse is to control amps and prevent a possible fire correct :DD
b)i have no idea
c) first law inertia Thanks man, but can you explain, because i don't really get the theory of Newton Law
#1 - Where does the gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happen in a plant?
ok so with the seatbelt thing... newtons first law of motion.. inertia an objects resistance in motion depending on its mass.. basically yeah all the laws contribute but inertia is the one that supports that statement the best. so the passenger will continue moving at a constant velocity until a force "x" (being the windscreen) stops them and thats sort of the third law, but the main idea of the car stopping suddenly and the passenger flying forwards, is the passengers resistance in motion.. which is inertia :)) hope that makes sense I ramble a lot
no worries :)) for the exam thing we have to be at caufield for 8:30 right?? did you guys get like gate/seat numbers or anything??I'm not exactly sure where I saw this, but your parents (or whoever's email you put in when you applied for the tests) will get an email around Wednesday or something giving you all the details about the testing (like what you need to bring, times, etc.)
Hahaha other way around SKGUN, Endothermic is when energy is taken in from the surroundingshahaha thanks! Ikr? Hopefully all of us perform rlly well.
Exothermic is when heat is transferred from the surroundings
Dw man, i thought u were correct, until i check my notes... hahahaha
I am freaken worried, because i don't know how hard the test will be or how smart are my competitors!!
1 What is Transpiration?
2 How is water from roots carried to the leaves?
Wow the exam starts so damn early :(
I really hope I get to sleep in time the night before without nerves not letting me sleep.
1 What is Transpiration?
2 How is water from roots carried to the leaves?
3 Where is excess water stored in the plant cells?
4 Why is it that hot air rises up?
5 In nuclear reactions, are atoms or matter lost, gained or changed?
Well, the first two questions go hand in hand.yeah haha! Transpiration is when water is evaporated from the surface of the leaves. The xylem tissue carry H20 up the plant and as it is evaporated from the top, it continues to move up.
1. Transpiration is the process of carrying the water through a plant.
2. It's carried from the roots to the leaves because of a tissue called xylem (is that how you spell it?). Xylem carries the water and nutrients up to the leaves of the tree. When water is evaporated from the leaves, negative pressure is created which pulls the water up through the tree. If this didn't happen, the water wouldn't be able to get further than 10 feet (something like that) due to a combination of air pressure change and elevation change, as well as gravity pulling the weight of the water down.
Is this right? I'm pretty sure I once read something about this in a new scientist magazine. :D
#4 Hot air rises up due to the process of convention. Once a fluid is heated, it expands and becomes less dense, thus it rises towards the atmosphere. Cooler fluid are more dense and thus they sink towards the ground.yep, well done! :D
Does anyone know if in JMSS there are before or after school activities
Every Wednesday afternoon they run a range of co-curricular activities, which you're able to choose from. They have a variety of things you can choose from, including language, music, arts, health and other things like chess and debating too.
There's some more info about it here: http://www.jmss.vic.edu.au/jmss/2576/co-curricular-options?frm_id=25
thanks, any before school?
I'm not actually sure about anything before school. It might say something on the website :)
Oh, and nice dog ;)
Ok this is kinda off topic but did you guy know that there are 3206 people going for MHS macrob nossal and Corey... That's huge!!!!! How many people do you reckon will be at ours next week.. There weren't that many people at the information night and there weren't many people on my tour and most were year 10 going for year 11
Only 7 sleeps to go :ODude what's science communication? Is that like the way you're interpreting your essay or something else... I was under the illusion we had 4 tests.... AHH :') please correct me if I'm wrong... :))
How are you guys keeping up with all your study?
My progress so far:
Maths: Mostly Confident.
Numerical Reasoning: Confident.
Science Reasoning: Pretty Confident.
Science Interest: Depends on topic...
Science Communication: Working on it.
Do you guys have any links on living systems my textbooks don't cover it very well also body anatomy...haha try this http://www.anatomyarcade.com/
Dude what's science communication? Is that like the way you're interpreting your essay or something else... I was under the illusion we had 4 tests.... AHH :') please correct me if I'm wrong... :))You basically have to communicate an issue, last year it was writing a speech about global warming, and the year before was a practical report on something :). I haven't been actively studying for it, but hopefully knowing the structure for practical reports is enough.
Maths: pretty confident
Numerical reasoning: confident
Science interest: confident on pretty much all year 8,9 and 10 topics probably could do with polishing my living systems a bit :))
General science: pretty confident...
haha try this http://www.anatomyarcade.com/thank you!! and the one you did at JAC is probably going to be a lot more relevant than just doing a bunch of random tests i just had a look around a few websites and they're all pretty easy and a waste of time.. don't go too overboard. read your notes and go through the feed back from your tests from JAC and school and do the chapter reviews for each topic and make sure you get 100% and give yourself like 15 minutes or go like 30-45 seconds per question
lol got it from school during my health class.... hahahaha not really difficult tbh...
does any one have any suggestions on practice paper on maths and numerical reasoning
Like i just finished my jac jmss course- but like it always feel like i haven't done enough :(
Wow the exam starts so damn early :(#1 - Is it th equivalent of respiration for plants?
I really hope I get to sleep in time the night before without nerves not letting me sleep.
1 What is Transpiration?
2 How is water from roots carried to the leaves?
3 Where is excess water stored in the plant cells?
4 Why is it that hot air rises up?
5 In nuclear reactions, are atoms or matter lost, gained or changed?
#1 - Is it th equivalent of respiration for plants?aha aw thank you!! :))
#2 - It is carried through the xylem, which is part of the vascular bundle along with the phloem
#3 - Excess water is stored in the vacuole, which usually takes up the majority of space in a plant cell
#4 - Hot air rises because it is less dense than cold air? (Not entirely sure)
#5 - It depends if it's a fission or fusion reaction, but generally matter is lost, emitting alpha radiation (Helium nucleus), beta radiation (Electron) or gamma rays (Electromagnetic)
Hopefully that was a decent attempt haha :D.
By the way - welcome to AN Elisha haha :).
aha aw thank you!! :))Hopefully these are right! :P
and for questions
a)name the 4 chambers of the heart?
b)what is the closest galaxy to us?
c)how many light years across is our galaxy?
d) what is a force?
I can't really think about any questions at the moment, but...a) you mean our iris?- the coloured ring shape membrane behind the cornea??
A) What is the white part of the eye called?
B) How do we hear?
C) What relationship does antimatter have with antimass?
EDIT: I kinda just realised you posted questions too. Woops...
a) you mean our iris?- the coloured ring shape membrane behind the cornea??1. To exchange gas from the lungs (co2 out, oxygen in)?
b) we hear things from our ear drums vibrating. Thus in the long run people who are always exposed to loud areas will experience hearing loss. That is the hair which makes our ear drums are no longer compressed, but more likely separated.
c) man i have absolutely no idea... :(
I'll ask a few more:
#1 What is the purpose of the alveoli in our lungs?
#2 During the process of photosynthesis, what are the reactants and products?
#3 which organ digest out fat and what substance does it produce?
#4 what enzyme is produced in our stomach to make our food very acidic?
1. To exchange gas from the lungs (co2 out, oxygen in)? YEP, well to be exact and sound more 'Posh' it is known as a gaseous exchange. But overall, you're correct :D
2. Carbon Dioxide + Sunlight + something ---> Glucose + Oxygen ? Aw.. man, very close. Carbon dioxide + hydrogen = glucose + oxygen
3. Pancreas? Lipids? No quite. Our LIVER produces BILE. PANCREAS, is used for making our food very acidic.
4. Hydrochloric Acid? Digestive Enzyme. On the other hand, Hydrochloric Acid is used to maintain the swimming it's high level of acidity or cleaning our driveway. Hahaha correct me if i'm wrong, trying to recall my facts form like ages ago.
Oh yea and guys just to clarify:That sounds about right :P.
There are 40 questions for Science Reasoning in 30 mins??
Numerical 50 questions in 30 mins?
Maths 60 questions in 30 mins?
And the two essays 25 mins each??- But one of them has 5 mins planning time??
pretty sure it was this aswell :H20 + CO2 + light ----> C6H12O6 + O2Oo... hahaha thanks man.., sure thing!!!
can i join your question thingo? :P
pretty sure it was this aswell :H20 + CO2 + light ----> C6H12O6 + O2Fire away! :)
can i join your question thingo? :P
dem fast replies tho :)I'm on Pearson science as my main sorta thing :)
what science books does everyone have here?
ill ask my questions a bit later lol
dem fast replies tho :)I have both Science Quest 9&10 for the Australian Curriculum. It's alright, but it does tend to include non-relevant information which can be annoying at times :P.
what science books does everyone have here?
ill ask my questions a bit later lol
What about maths?I use maths quest 9 and 10- Just looking through the main areas on year 9 maths and having a glance with Quadratic, Simultaneous, Trig and Parabola- yr. 10.
What about maths?Cambridge Essentials Mathematics for the Australian Curriculum Year 9 - Excellent textbook! Has a lot of content from Year 10, and extension bits and pieces :).
Oh yea and guys should we like redo the maths test on DEECD?? lol or is it a waste of time??i did the nossal exam for year 10 entry. The deecd ones on the internet are a little bit harder I reckon. And also a bit easier. I think its a good idea to study them well.
wth....editing posts doesnt work?
waftj, did they release anythin new?
Hahaha try clicking on the modify link on the top right hand side corner
No i don't think so, but don't you think it is worth just redoing in, as i heard no matter what year level you're in the test would be really similar...
scored 54/60 for maths before.. :/ is that a good score?? considering that it is designated for year 8 students, not year 9??
idk, i think it is. wasnt there a test for y9 aswell?Hahaha those practice test are for any students from yr. 8- 10 students who wish to have a go with their practice test. Hahaha it is really similar to the actual test, even the format!!
LOL but then, i only scored like 39-early 40ish for my numerical a few weeks ago ://
If any of you guys learn well visually or audibly and want to learn science topics I would suggest this guy:Wow thanks! There's 72 videos in Chemistry alone... :P
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEik-U3T6u6JA0XiHLbNbOw
This guy does in-depth videos on all sorts of science and has really helped me learn a bit about topics I haven't looked at too much in the textbook. Taking notes also helps with the videos :D
If any of you guys learn well visually or audibly and want to learn science topics I would suggest this guy:HAHHA man thanks :)), except the stuff he talks about seem to be very advance..
Hi,Welcome! :)
I'm doing the JMSS exam this year and it's only a week away :-\
I'm just wondering how many questions and how much time we have for each test?
Please reply asap :D
I haven't really done so much practice. Just some Icas papers, some other practice papers, and watched some documentaries......
Thanks
Thats a good idea! :)Ooh ooh ohh. I'm gonna write like 1-2 essays a night. :)
How does the energy from the sun end up in a football player's body and energy?
Wow thanks! There's 72 videos in Chemistry alone... :P72? I didn't realise there were that many. I think he has a smaller playlist with more basic chemistry videos. You could probably look at those instead.
Trust me on this, but I think everyone in this conversation (especially hannibal) except me will get into JMSS. You guys seem to be working so hard for JMSS. Anyone know how to prevent procrastination?
:) :) :) :) ;) ;) ;D
Trust me on this, but I think everyone in this conversation (especially hannibal) except me will get into JMSS. You guys seem to be working so hard for JMSS. Anyone know how to prevent procrastination?Everyone procrastinates, but we all have our moments of study euphoria as well :P. There's no easy way to prevent it, you just have to work around it I suppose ;). For me, knowing that there is only six days left makes me work harder, knowing that I'll never get an opportunity to study for this again. Besides, afterwords I have a week long camp, followed by two weeks of holidays :D.
:) :) :) :) ;) ;) ;D
Trust me on this, but I think everyone in this conversation (especially hannibal) except me will get into JMSS. You guys seem to be working so hard for JMSS. Anyone know how to prevent procrastination?haha wow thanks but seriously i am certain that you will do fine. Do not let that distract you, you do have the potential to get accepted. Its really this week and last week that I have procrastinated heaps. Like going to have dinner, then say "half an hour more" and watch the big bang theory. Then I will go on AN and read forums. I guess, haha AN has been what I have procrastinated on a lot!
:) :) :) :) ;) ;) ;D
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try and block some of the sites I go on. The thing is that I don't play computer games, just PS3. I played today and I feel bad doing that before the exam. The thing is that last year I tried so hard to get into Mhs, I stopped playing PS3 and watching alot of tv. Most of my day was studying..........Then this year my brother tried for a year 7 entry and he doesn't even study alot. Most of the time hes on youtube or playing fifa 13 on the ps3. I felt happy and sad at the same time when they sent an email telling him he got an interview. It's just unfair how I spent more than half a year studying last year and I don't even get a pd and he doesn't do anything and he get an interview.......I know how you feel. I tried for nossal high school and did vigorous studying last year and didnt get accepted. That also hit me hard. However I did know what I did wrong. Firstly, I started studying with like 1 and half months till the exam and I studied the wrong things. The tuition I went to did not teach the right stuff and I thought it was good. This year, I began study in January, did hard studying the last 2-3 months and last week and this week, doing practise essays/papers and kinda chillin. Haha, I also did the nossal high year 10 paper, and the maths/numerical reasoning were not too bad, so that boosted my confidence. Now, working hard on my science.
Mhs has hit me hard, and thats one of the reason why I don't feel like studying :( I just feel so useless and this makes me think that I have no chance.
Getting into JMSS would be a great thing, but if I'm going to be like this I just wont be able to :(
Trust me on this, but I think everyone in this conversation (especially hannibal) except me will get into JMSS. You guys seem to be working so hard
Seriously don't doubt yourself! Everyone can do it! Even you prepare late, it's fine! You're ahead of the people who decided to not do anything and just chill today (like me LOL)Yeah haha, there's always going to be people ahead and behind you, and as long as you place faith in your own abilities, that's all you can really do :).
Yeah haha, there's always going to be people ahead and behind you, and as long as you place faith in your own abilities, that's all you can really do :).haha wow hannibal, dem questions ;)
By the way! Who knows what pen they will be writing with for the exam? :P
Thanks for reminding me haha... I still have 2 more Science ones to do :)
Oh and my pen doesn't have a brand haha, the tag scraped off a while ago. It's running low on ink, but it is so smooth and elegant to write with, we are true life companions <3.
By the way! Who knows what pen they will be writing with for the exam? :P
sorry man, its the paid past papers. $6 each i think :)Oh... haha i might purchase a few then :)
Aha just a question how many of you guys have been tutored!? I haven't as I really don't see the point in it.. :))
The one thing I haven't concentrated on is my handwriting... To the point of some of my handwriting is ineligible... Aha just a question how many of you guys have been tutored!? I haven't as I really don't see the point in it.. :))Doesn't really matter. Frankly, the 60 hours I spent doing tests at JAC could have been better spent :(.
Hey guys! ;D just a quick question, have any of you studied the anatomy of a plant?There's a few posts about it on a blog I made: http://victorianscience.wordpress.com
Because I'm studying that now and I can't find a good website, either it's too simple or too detailed. :-\
So can someone send me a good link about Plant anatomy or some notes? ;)
There's a few posts about it on a blog I made: http://victorianscience.wordpress.comaha wow! What a blog! You will be fine for the essay, already superior knowledge :)
There isn't much content on there though, because of lack of time :(.
Hi! I'm a newcomer to this forum and I am also sitting the JMSS test this Saturday :)nah mate, its all good. Basically, most of us know our year 9 science and maths textbooks well. Most of us also have gone into further detail within the 2 subjects as well. Me personally, have gone through year 7,8, and 9 (and year 10 chemistry) Science and made short, dot point chapter summaries to look at on Friday. :) For maths, I have gone through year 9 curriculum and year 10 basics. I have done 5 ICAS Science exams to prepare me as well as practise essays on various topics. I have attended JAC and Hendersons. JAC was not good, I think I only obtained science writing and timing skills from it. Hendersons were good, but likely nothing you didn't already know. They gave some shortcuts and so to help speed up my confidence and timing. If you did Mhs, nhs, schs or macrob last year, the maths and numerical are very similiar! Good Luck to you and I have been advised to not study on Friday (just read over notes). :D
Hopefully it's not too late to be a part of this conversation and to exchange knowledge with one another :D
Oh wow! You have done soooo much studying, you'll definitely get in for sure. As for myself I have touched on year 8,9 and a bit of year 10 science. From this I have made revision notes under Biology, Chemistry and Physics (I myself tend to favour Biology a bit more than the rest but overall somehow I manage to do better in chemistry ::)) Last year I didn't try out for Macrob since I found it too competitive and would never have been guaranteed a place. Hopefully though my hard work will pay off based on my results from the JMSS test ;D Good luck to all those trying out as well :Dhaha thanks but I am sure you will make it too :) You have learned the essentials and me too! I like biology the most but seem to do well in chemistry, haha! Yeah, what rilin said before was good, DO NOT learn anything new on friday haha! Best of luck!
haha thanks but I am sure you will make it too :) You have learned the essentials and me too! I like biology the most but seem to do well in chemistry, haha! Yeah, what rilin said before was good, DO NOT learn anything new on friday haha! Best of luck!Oh... LOL so am I the only person here who enjoys Physics more than anything else Hahahaha!
Just dedicate 3-4 hours of jmss study this week, EXCEPT FRIDAY, DO NOTHING FRIDAY (as I have been advised).
Change of topic, everyone contribute opinons and ideas.
What is your favourite recent breakthrough in Science and why?
I guess it is a possible essay topic but aha, I just thought it may be beneficial to share ideas about this! ;)
btw, did yall guys get your exam day confirmation emails?
YEP be @ Caulfield by 8:30am...
but it's strange how they didn't told us our seating no...
true, well at least we got our IDs....
Im actually startin to think i wont get in....
Aw man.. I'm on the same boat as you... For me, it always feel like i haven't done enough work for the day :/
Im actually startin to think i wont get in....
I think I'm on the same boat as you. I'm really in doubt at the moment.
This oddly mysterious music I'm listening to at the moment doesn't help though... I should probably change it to something more relaxing.
YEP be @ Caulfield by 8:30am...hmm, thats so true. Maybe there wont be as many people as we expected. Or maybe they will line us up according the starting letter of out surnames?
but it's strange how they didn't told us our seating no...
what music? btw what do you guys think of getting some group convo going on a instant kind of messenger thing? like skype idk?yea wouldnt mind that. Anyone got imessage? Thats okay too. Skype is still good.
hmm, thats so true. Maybe there wont be as many people as we expected. Or maybe they will line us up according the starting letter of out surnames?
well i have to finish few assignments this week coz of year 9 camp, so i technically am losing out today and tomorrow.....plus i have uncovered topics....and if people sitting the exam will all be like Hannibal....i am soooo fuckedNah man, not me. I have studied well I think but no where as near as Hannibal. Seriously, idk anyone that knows that much science depth as a year 9.
Wait a moment. If there are less people this year (which I'm hoping there are) than we have a statistically higher chance of getting in! (unless the only people that do go are the ones who study as much as Hannibal (I'm jelly))
I feel you :( I bet Hannibal srsly is smart enough to be able to skip a year....
But I guess not all of us will have already started studying, I went around my year level asking if they have studied at all and nearly everyone I asked said no...
Hahaha well honestly, I personally believe I have made an effort into preparing this exam.you got some crazy friends lol :P
Yea, like i know a few of my friends who are trying out for JMSS and still hosted a party.
And it is not just any party... One with like over 100 people invited and like they don't commence until 2 in the morning!!
Wow you guys are studying so hard wow! It amazes me how keen you guys are! I hardly studied for the jmss exam, just for maths and numerical! And then there are you guys! If you guys don't make it in, I don't know who will hahah!!!Haha oh how time's have changed Undeadeast15.. as the year goes by the competition also rises ;)
YEP be @ Caulfield by 8:30am...When I did my exam I wasn't given a desk number either but there was probably 800+ there (every year has had an increase in number though just by rough estimates though) but they'll call you in by last name I believe! It can also get quite cold too so wear something warm on the day LOL
but it's strange how they didn't told us our seating no...
Btw, are there any people who have interest in IT?
I feel you :( I bet Hannibal srsly is smart enough to be able to skip a year....Welcome!
But I guess not all of us will have already started studying, I went around my year level asking if they have studied at all and nearly everyone I asked said no...
...but they'll call you in by last name I believe...
I'm near the end of the alphabet in terms of my last name... it looks like I might be standing in the cold for a very long time...same here lol
I'll send you a message on skype :)OMFG, seriously? what language, any engine? im currently working on a project myself
Yeah, I love IT. I'm like a monster when it comes to that stuff. I got a high distinction in the ICAS test for IT and know like 4 different programming languages. In my spare time I'm even working on making a videogame (sad truth is, sometimes it gets in the way of study :()
I'm near the end of the alphabet in terms of my last name... it looks like I might be standing in the cold for a very long time...Well I never exactly did my exam at the venue you're currently meant to be doing it at since after my year they changed locations (to fit a larger amount of people since there was too many people trying out plus tables and chairs are set up for Monash Uni exams LOL) so you'll have to ask someone who did the exam last year on how they called people in but I believe it would be the same anyway..
you got some crazy friends lol :Pme too man, hopefully I have worked enough and efficiently :)
I believe that i have made an effort too man, hope it is gonna be enough for me to get in.
About the group chat:
If anyone wants to join a group chat(will probably be on imessage or/and skype), add me on skype :th3mrn0b0dy ; imessage: [email protected] (just message me)
Btw, are there any people who have interest in IT?
me too man, hopefully I have worked enough and efficiently :)
Hannibal has my imessage, ask him for it and add all us to a group maybe?
I'll send you a message on skype :)That's amazing! I used to be interested but have been lacking interest lately... Four languages is phenomenal :).
Seriously though guys I mean for the fact that we are even bothering to think about it and take the time to consult ideas and stuff it's way more than what most people are doing I know a group of kids from one school are doing it cause their parents want them to and haven't studied at all.. So on the bright side we will all beat at least the 15 I know of... We can do this :)) never surrender
Hahahaha Elisha i like your positive thinking ;) !! YEP, over 50 students from my school are trying out, although i know like no more than 10 students actually been studying for the test..I reckon that's about the same with most of the people trying out.. (I hope anyway!!) what are you guys bringing as snacks...
I reckon that's about the same with most of the people trying out.. (I hope anyway!!) what are you guys bringing as snacks...
I used to do a bit on codeacademy, but I found that teaching myself through forums and examples was easier. Codeacademy didn't feel right for me.Simple? Mmm
You're like a genius Hannibal, how would you get stuck with something so simple like programming???
Anyway, food wise I'll probably bring a juice box or something like that. I got the sheet that has all the information for the tests, did anyone else get it? :) We need photo identification haha.
Basically they said you need photo ID plastic see through bag with snack and drink bottle. No phones calcs, and bring a pen a pencil a sharpener and a rubber in a zip lock plastic thing.
I really don't know what to bring as a snack... And have you ever had a "green smoothie" I will have that for breakfast
Thanks for this. I'll have to make sure I get all that stuff ready for the test. I haven't actually had a 'green smoothie'. I'll have to try one. Does it have like avocado and spinach and stuff in it or what? I kinda like spinach, but only with cheese :PStudent ID counts
Oh... and does a Student ID count as photo evidence?
Student ID counts
And yeah it's like kale spinach celery dates pear banana lemon basically whatever you want don't add carrot though it makes it taste really weird
Student ID countsNutriBullet? I really need to get one of those :P.
And yeah it's like kale spinach celery dates pear banana lemon basically whatever you want don't add carrot though it makes it taste really weird
NutriBullet? I really need to get one of those :P.i use a high power juicer.. but my friend has a nutribullet it is actually the coolest thing :D
A few snakes too for some short term rejuvenation :). Final revision wise I'm just re-writing notes... Hopefully that works. What's everyone else doing?Hahaha i'm just reviewing all the notes I wrote throughout the last fortnight and will later write an essay and do an ICAS paper
The days coming closer :-\For writing, 25 minutes is actually quite a lot of time to write a science essay, unless it is a topic you are very knowledgable in. Maths and NR though... I would assume that we will have to work really fast. Probably give yourself a maximum of 45 seconds to figure something out, because finishing the test puts you in good stead against slower competitors. And in reading time (If there is any), try and look for easy questions that you can do in your head, because the more time you can save the better :D
I'm having trouble keeping up with homework and studying for jmss :'(
I know so much smart people from glen waverley who are trying out............
Anyone tell me some essay topics and how they are able to manage time in the tests?
Hey waftj,
I think you should, you might even score up some extra marks :D
I should try that as well, but I think we need more writing than diagrams :P
I love drawing.....
AND
Does someone correct your essays for you?
Or are you just practising?
I was reading through the previous posts + really old posts and I saw that only like half the people get interview....
I'm so dead. My parents want me to get into jmss cos I failed mhs....
Hey waftj,i used to correct my own essays, you learn more and understand where you went wrong and its easier to fix if you pick it up yourself... but I used to write them wait a week and then correct.. we don't really have that luxury of time anymore so just write them and get a parent/older sibling to correct them :))
I think you should, you might even score up some extra marks :D
Hey waftj,Half the people getting an interview is actually amazing, most of the time it's 10% or 20%. Don't worry about failure, just work hard for the next few days and don't leave behind any regrets :).
I am pretty sure that they will give us a topic that people know at least a bit about. Probably year 8 curriculum as it was the last few years (cells, separating, plants etc). Hopefully it is about energy transfer and photosynthesis! :)aw... man hahaha I go to sleep at 10 now, but I usually don't fall saleep until 10:30...
Is anyone else having trouble going to sleep these days? Last 2 days, I went at 9pm and fell asleep 12am-1am! It may be because I am sick or may be the nerves! :( Btw, half of the people get an interview??? Thats pretty good honestly! ;D :D
Is anyone else having trouble going to sleep these days? Last 2 days, I went at 9pm and fell asleep 12am-1am! It may be because I am sick or may be the nerves! :( Btw, half of the people get an interview??? Thats pretty good honestly! ;D :D
Also whats this about essays on the exam, are we just supposed to write about what we know? or does the topic give instructions on what to write.Within the exam, they will give you two sciencetific base essays :)
Is it possible to bring a bag to hold things such as Food, Personal belongings such as (phone,wallet,myki etc.)
Refer to this:It doesn't really specify exceptions for other items such as the myki card, because I will be departing by train and I will need my phone/myki/wallet etc.
for all the details on the test and what you need to take. It should explain everything.
It doesn't really specify exceptions for other items such as the myki card, because I will be departing by train and I will need my phone/myki/wallet etc.Awesome thank you very much for clarifying that for me. :)
Hello Godzerah, you are to bring your belongings in a clear plastic bag eg. those big zip lock bagsnot even my digital watch? (that tells the time) :'( :'(
Hahaha and phones are strictly not permitted into the premises
You could probably hide that in your underpants. As for the phone, bring a sandwich with you on the day and hide your phone in there for the duration of the test. Trust me, a sandwich isn't a very suspicious place to hide your phone.I'm probably going to bring a slice of cake instead of a sandwhich since the exam day is on my birthday :C I also don't think I can fit a phone in my slice of cake.
What's going to be your wish? ;)Shhhh! Quiet Hannibal. If they tell us it won't come true...
Shhhh! Quiet Hannibal. If they tell us it won't come true...:O your right! I should keep quiet then :-X
I'm probably going to bring a slice of cake instead of a sandwich since the exam day is on my birthday :C I also don't think I can fit a phone in my slice of cake.
Oh yea and guys btw, how long did you guys spend on your ICAS papers??I'm having the same issue. It feels like I'm spending too long reading through the questions and not taking in enough information. I should probably learn to read faster, it might help in situations like this.
LOL i'm worried i am spending too much time per question :O
and yea, Happy Birthday Godzerah :DD
Oh yea and guys btw, how long did you guys spend on your ICAS papers??A bit under an hour for Science :). Is tomorrow everyone's last day of intense study? :D
LOL i'm worried i am spending too much time per question :O
and yea, Happy Birthday Godzerah :DD
Oh yea and guys btw, how long did you guys spend on your ICAS papers??I have just been doing it 30 mins for the first 30 questions :)
LOL i'm worried i am spending too much time per question :O
and yea, Happy Birthday Godzerah :DD
I have just been doing it 30 mins for the first 30 questions :)Hahaha, then I'm guess i am on the right track :) around 1 min per sec on maths and English for ICAS
A bit under an hour for Science :). Is tomorrow everyone's last day of intense study? :DLOL Hannibal, yep :D doing final touches on electricity :DD haha crossing my finger that topic will be on the exam :)
Maybe bring a whole cake and share it with the people doing the test around you (or keep it to yourself). I think if you hid the phone underneath the cake it might work. Oh... and in case I don't see you on the day, Happy Birthday!
Wow guys, 2 more days! Can you believe it? Seems like yesterday that it was 6 months to go! Time went so quick and it even is half the year gone already! :o So much studying, preparing and practising on the last months we have done have lead to Saturday the 21st June. :-\ ;D :D
Anyone staying home tomorrow for last minute studies?I'm not allowed unfortunately :'(. Oh well... I feel ready to connect my pen to paper, come at me EduTEST! :D
I'm not allowed unfortunately :'(. Oh well... I feel ready to connect my pen to paper, come at me EduTEST! :D
I'm not allowed unfortunately :'(. Oh well... I feel ready to connect my pen to paper, come at me EduTEST! :Dhaha! I'm staying home since all our exams are done :D I am feeling mixed but also think I have prepared well. Come at us eduTEST! ;)
haha! I'm staying home since all our exams are done :D I am feeling mixed but also think I have prepared well. Come at us eduTEST! ;)LUCKY :D Yea, i have to be at school tomorrow...
Hahaha all of you guys are like "wow yeah I'm so prepared!" "months of studying should pay off!!" and I'm here just like "I'm so screwed.." ( I don't mean to offend anyone, Apologies to anyone I do offend)For the essays, the examiners expect you to write at least 1 page to 1 and 1/2 (it depends if diagrams are included and how large your handwriting is) hahaha on average, I write 1 and 1/4 pages.
On a serious note though, how long do the essays on the exam have to be?
I'm also currently doing some practice essays and was wondering If I could get some topics? thanks
LUCKY :D Yea, i have to be at school tomorrow... For the essays, the examiners expect you to write at least 1 page to 1 and 1/2 (it depends if diagrams are included and how large your handwriting is) hahaha on average, I write 1 and 1/4 pages.
I did a practise essay (the one about separating the water, sand, and iron fillings) about a week ago and haven't gathered up the courage to read it yet (it's probably really bad). I'm going to do a few more (tonight and tomorrow) just to gather up my magical essay powers.Up to you haha, as long as you get a good night sleep though, all is good :). I'm personally just going to read over all my notes though.
Oh... and to clarify things. You know how you said not to learn new things or study too much on Friday, would I still be allowed to do essays? I'm going to go to bed really early, but if I have a chance before that should I?
I'm personally just going to read over all my notes though.Same here haha! I made chapter summaries of every single chapter of year 7,8 and 9 Science in dot points, so I will read them. :)
Same here haha! I made chapter summaries of every single chapter of year 7,8 and 9 Science in dot points, so I will read them. :)LOL i have one for sure: Have a cup of warm milk before bed :DD Always worked for me
Anyone have any tips to try to fall asleep quickly? It takes me like 1 - 2 hours after laying in bed to actually go to sleep these days :-\
Same here haha! I made chapter summaries of every single chapter of year 7,8 and 9 Science in dot points, so I will read them. :)Yeah like waftj said, drinking a warm cup of milk works pretty well but another way I guess is to get rid of all your thoughts, if that makes sense :D. Our brain tends to rethink about the events that's happened during the day, but that is very annoying because it makes your brain stay alert, which means you can't fall asleep :-\ But yeah, thinking about it, it has been quite hard for me to fall asleep too these few days, probably just too much thinking, haha :P
Thanks for the help :D
Try meditation. I'm not going to give you a wall of text saying how because you can easily find it on the internet, but meditating helps me to fall asleep when I can't fall asleep very easily :DYeah I guess that should work. I will give it a try maybe. Haha, I have been told to relaxing music too. Similiar, aha thanks :)
LOL i have one for sure: Have a cup of warm milk before bed :DD Always worked for meEww :P.
Not sure haha, what are the different parts of Caufield Race Course? Maybe just outside the toilets or at the entrance :P. And during the break, or after the exam?
Haven't actually considered that. Where shall we meet up?haha, does anyone know the caulfield racecourse grandstand place well? There probs will be heaps of people around the toilet though :-\
That's what I was thinking.same here, I'll probably be going home straight after.
We can't really ask random people if they are "__________" from atar notes..........
I think it should be after the test, but there's a chance that I'd be going home straight after :P
What are you doing rite now?Reading over chapter summaries, procrastinating etc. Hahaha. I did the eduTEST website practise exam where we had to pay for in year 10 level. I did quite well. How about you?
I'll probably be wearing something generic. You'll know who I am because of my messy hair and serious expression. I also have a half-grown moustache which looks really bad at the moment. :PHaha okay, I'll look out for that :P. I'll be wearing a blue Puma jacket.
Is everybody ready for the exam? :D
Haha okay, I'll look out for that :P. I'll be wearing a blue Puma jacket.haha yes thank you guys so much, been so helpful these last couple of weeks lets smash it :))xx
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that contributed to this thread, simply talking about it inspires everyone to work harder, and I've gotten a lot out of it :).
Good luck!!!
Wow, your doing good alright :PHahaha well... it doesn't really matter because money could of be more well spent... LOL i heard that Henderson was far better and not as expensive:DD
I didn't know u guys go jac..................
I don't, I'm just trying out and seeing if I get in.........
I thought that last year was a waste of money, on tuition.
You guys really don't need to worry about the test, your going to ace it :P
You guys have done some really good preparation, so GOOD LUCK :D
HAHAHA No worries man, LOL yea I'm sure all of us on this forum worked even harder, LOL thanks to you for giving us all the top tips and SKGUN for reminding me about ICAS :DDNot there unfortunately :(. And yeah, JAC testing was the biggest waste of time and money, unless you are after stimulated exam conditions.
LOL for now, have a good rest, maybe write one final essay and review your notes :)) LOL and if were all lucky, we will be classmates next year ;) HAHA well that's only a if...
LOL my JAC test 20 arrived in the mail today.. Not bad i suppose, top for maths and above for science :)). What about you guys (Hannibal and Skgun)??
Yeah, that would be awesome :DRoughly 200 students are taken, and there's a chance that the Science Reasoning essay will be a practical report :)
How much do they take for the school?
Do you think that they'd give us prac reports to write?
Roughly 200 students are taken, and there's a chance that the Science Reasoning essay will be a practical report :)Remind me, what parts of a prac report do we need to include? Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Results and Conclusion? Or is there any more?
Umm I know this is reeeaally late but what's JAC?a tutoring company :)) stands for James Ann College
Remind me, what parts of a prac report do we need to include? Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Results and Conclusion? Or is there any more?Title, Aim, Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Diagram (Optional),Expected Results, Discussion (Optional) and Conclusion. The only reason you would have a discussion is if you are really knowledgable about the topic and want to show it off :P.
how would you write your method- in dot points or a paragraph?
Good luck to all of you. I'm sure you'll all do amazing you all seemed so prepared :).
Thank you all so much everyone for this past "MONTH" (yes one month >.>) has been truly inspirational. I have gained allot of studying techniques, knowledge and friendships, I think all of you guys have studied well and are extremely prepared (much more than me I assume). I can't believe the test has arrived so quickly omg. I'm looking forward for the test and meeting you guys. See you in a few hours!!
Morning everybody. Ready for the big test? :)Lets do it everyone! :D
Lets do it everyone! :D
I didn't meet anybody :(
Yeah, went pretty well on the test. I finished all of them and did really well except for the last essay. I messed up on it and didn't finish in time. Other than that I did pretty well.
How about the rest of y'all?
Does anyone know for sure how many people there was?I'm assuming around 700?
It was decent I suppose... No major complaints :). SKGUN was sitting near me and I met godzerah during the break haha, it wasn't overly awkward ;).yep I feel the same! Really hope I get an interview :)
Science Reasoning - Very similar to ICAS, some questions took a while to get my head around
Numerical Reasoning - Pretty good, a few that took a little long so I skipped :P
Science Interest - The topics were terrible -.-. Decided to do the relationship between circulatory and respiratory because the other one was so ambiguous :/.
Maths - Probably the easiest one haha, only a few that were a little iffy.
Science Reasoning - Loved the topic, I made plenty of analogies and tried to relate it to a younger audience, although I wish I could go in depth about some of the concepts.
Overall, it was alright haha! How did everyone else find it?
I'm assuming around 700?:o ??? really?? Thats good!
:o ??? really?? Thats good!
I'm assuming around 700?Jeez. Good for the school, I guess!
I was in the 600-700 area, and I saw the numbers go up to something just short of 800. I was expecting waaaay more...That increases our chances by about 10% :P.
That increases our chances by about 10% :P.Yeah, I don't think there were even 750 people::) because my last name starts with a "Z" so I was actually sitting on the
I sorta tried looking for you guys, haha but there were so much people :P
Did anyone see me by any chance, haha ;D I was wearing a very light blue sorta puffy jacket with a purple stripy top under and black leggings
THAT BLUE BAG WAS YOURS!?!
hahaha I saw you during the break and I was going to approach you but I was too shy sorry :/.
what does tl;dr mean?? I've been wanting to know what this means for so long!
Oh yeah I did the exact same thing as you for the Science Interest so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
For my essay, I wrote about the respiratory system and I wrote a bit about smoking and asthma, like 2-3 sentences only though! I think you'll do fine.aw... hahaha thankyou :) LOL and like i think for the 2nd essay i drew an beryllium atom diagram, but i did not draw 4 electrons!! Silly me, only 2 :// Oh well, at least i talked about isotopes on my 4th paragraph which will hopefully boost the examiners mind (Y)
Damn I put my hands on my head but I still can't find youSame here...
LOL btw guys how long were your essays?? Hahaha because it seems like majority of people wrote 2 pages, while i only wrote 1 and 1/2 for each </3 Man i write slow...Interest was two pages and Communication was two and a quarter. Did you actually put your hands on your head near the toilet Shin? Haha :P.
Did you actually put your hands on your head near the toilet Shin? Haha :P.
I'm assuming around 700?
Yeah I spoke to one of the French teachers on the day and he said about 750 applicants
I didn't meet anybody :(
Yeah, went pretty well on the test. I finished all of them and did really well except for the last essay. I messed up on it and didn't finish in time. Other than that I did pretty well.
How about the rest of y'all?
Hey guys just out of curiosity what were your writing topics for both essays .
Topic 1: Either to design an experiment on how salt affects the boiling point or explain the difference between respiratory and circulatory system and pick onedamn these topics are hard
Topic 2: Your a primary school teacher and you are to teach a grade 5 student on the difference between an atom and cell
LOL i think my topic 1 is actually better than topic 2.
Yeah I spoke to one of the French teachers on the day and he said about 750 applicantsWOW! I really hope that is true! I hope I passed the cut off mark for interviews!
Btw guys, just due to curiosity did everyone end up solving every questions??I finished all the questions, but barely :P.
Me:
Science Reasoning: Hard for me to interpret, but end up answering every question.. (prob the hardest out of them all)
Numerical Reasoning: Pretty straight forward, no biggie. But there were a few i had a glance and immediately guessed, because i realised there is not way i will finish it on time.
Essay Topic 1: Hum... it was alright knew exactly what I was going to write.
Maths: Wasn't hard, but time was an issue to me... skipped between 5-9ish....
Essay Topic 2: LOL I found that kind of difficult, because it wasn't what I expected. Never the less, still wrote a solid 1 and 1/4 pages- but made it look like 1 and 1/2 ish with 2 large diagrams.
LOL and for topic 2, what ideas did you guys jotted down? LOL I just described the difference structure, function of the nucleus and how atoms have Ionic Bond. LOL I could of written heaps more, but then I only have 3 mins left once i finished paragraph 4 so I just quickly summed up with a conclusion and gave myself enough time to quickly correct some minor spelling and grammar errors. :P
I did,
I finished all the questions, but barely :P.LOL GUYS hopefully everyone on this forum made into the interview!! Hahaha but then overall, I think my essay 1 was better than essay 2 LOL
For the second essay I did an introduction, a paragraph on atoms, three on cells, and then explained the differences between them in a conclusion. Managed to roughly do two diagrams, really messy though :(. Having to explain to 11 hear olds really limited me... Hopefully I gain marks for a fairly understandable explanation :P.
For the first essay, did anyone do the first option on the prac? Did anyone do a discussion or explain why they thought the temperature of boiling increases/decreases?
LOL and for topic 2, what ideas did you guys jotted down?
Guys, btw for topic 1 where the stated something about the circulatory system and the respiratory system, did the asked about the relationship or difference??I'm pretty sure it was their relationship, although I may be wrong. When is everyone going to start preparing for interviews? :)
LOL one of my friend and I aren't really sure :/ Can you help us out??
My friend wrote relationship, while i wrote difference :O
SO NERVOUS!!!
I'm pretty sure it was their relationship, although I may be wrong. When is everyone going to start preparing for interviews? :)thats if I get an interview ???
I'm pretty sure it was their relationship, although I may be wrong. When is everyone going to start preparing for interviews? :)
Yeah I'm pretty sure it was about relationship as well but don't worry! Yours may be pretty good and the examiner might not even care LOL
lol, I have a feeling everyone on this site will :P. Holidays next week! :Dhaha thanks! :) I really hope! Do you know how many get it?
lol, I have a feeling everyone on this site will :P. Holidays next week! :D
aw.. LOL thanks Hannibal!! YAY!! Hahaha time to whip out my year 10 science textbook ;)Probably half of the people that tried out... So around 400ish?
I'm actually starting to get bored already LOL
LOL same now I don't know what to do since the JMSS exam is over, Chinese school is over and reports are almost out ...There is just nothing to do ahahahI know right ;D haha, right now I'm just chillin and not being very productive, lol ::) It feels so different to have so much
Btw, how is everybody going with interview prep? (if any...)Haven't started yet but I'm probably going to start by researching a topic in depth that I really enjoy, that I can talk about as my passion. How about you?
Btw, how is everybody going with interview prep? (if any...)
yeah...I should start research on microbiology because thats what I am interested in. Anyways, it is so strange now with so much time! I get distracted thinking about if I will get an interview now! I really hope we all get interviews :)Don't worry, I'm sure all your study will pay off and you will get an interview ;D I seriously don't know what I'm really interested in, lol! I just find 'Science' really interesting I guess :P
I really hope we all get interviews :)Microbiology, sounds interesting :). I'm looking into quantum mechanics, and its applications in time/space travel for the future. Might not be my final decision, but there's so much time to explore different topics :D.
Hey guys do you know when we get notified for an interview?
Hey guys do you know when we get notified for an interview?It says on the form thing they sent you, interviews will be sent out July/August to candidates.
Really hoping to get an interview :)same here haha :)
Fingers crossed.
anyone in yr 11 get an interview yet?One of my friends received an interview for Year 11 entry, good luck :).
which one of the mc tests did you guys find hardest?
Hahaha probably Science Reasoning.Yeah for me it was Science Reasoning that was the hardest, then Numerical and Maths. I heard there is a Hendersons course for interview preparation... Might consider it ;).
Maths was okay for me, but end up guessing a few questions here and there and 5 towards the end.
LOL found numerical reasoning the easiest.- Hahaha but still ended up guessing a few that I realised there is no way I could finish it under 45 secs.
WBU??
Hahaha probably Science Reasoning.Same, I found Science Reasoning the hardest - Timing was not an issue but the content was like "WTF" in some questions. Maths and Numerical reasoning were great but still guessed like 5-10 cause I skipped over complicated/big questions! ;)
I also found science reasoning the hardest, followed by mathematics and then numerical reasoning. I finished all of them on time though and only had to guess 1 question in the whole of the exam.wow seriously? Didn't you skip any?
I also found science reasoning the hardest, followed by mathematics and then numerical reasoning. I finished all of them on time though and only had to guess 1 question in the whole of the exam.Did you end up making educated guesses or rushing questions on long and intimidating questions because of time? That's awesome haha :P.
Did you end up making educated guesses or rushing questions on long and intimidating questions because of time? That's awesome haha :P.
wow seriously? Didn't you skip any?Well, I did skip or guess some, but I managed to come back near the end and answer them all.
Yeah for me it was Science Reasoning that was the hardest, then Numerical and Maths. I heard there is a Hendersons course for interview preparation... Might consider it ;).
Don't go to Hendersons, it's a waste of money! Went there last year, and it's not worth the money! Just ask current JMSS students the layout of the interview and the questions they asked on solo interview!!Thanks for the heads up :)
Hey guys, my school just distributed our semester 1 report and like I didn't received many A's. Like Science was okay, but then English was just mainly C's. I'm worried that during the interview the examiners would not be impressed with my report and will just kick me out :/The report is only a tiny part of the process, smash the interview and you'll be fine :D. I personally averaged A+ overall barely... But got 2 D's, 3 C's and 2 UG's, mainly for Chinese :P.
Any ideas or suggestion guys??
I'm worried that during the interview the examiners would not be impressed with my report and will just kick me out :/dw, it does not really matter that much, I hope. Just elaborate on how much you would benefit from JMSS rather than your current school! Dont worry, you will smash the interview! ;)
However, English was so so.- Partly because i never study for my spelling test LOL and yea electives were okay.
Oh... haha, well i'm sure you will ace everything :D
How were the comments from your teachers?
We get graded in High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Merit, Pass and NS respectivelyI have the same grading system as SKGUN11 ahahah! High 5
I have the same grading system as SKGUN11 ahahah! High 5That's still really good, nothing to worry about ;).
I got HD for all subjects except for science and media :'(
What if science is actually my second worst subject for some reason :'( It makes me worry because of this...
Anyone know what they would talk about as their "passion" in the interview?well my passion for the current is astrophysics so i guess i would talk about recent developments why i like it and what i want to contribute... idk aha also a tip if you guys get an interview it would probably be helpful to mention that you want to be around "like minded students" and I dont think getting interview tutor is going to help.. I mean fair enough for the maths and stuff it may have been kinda relevant cause maths is sort of generic just worded differently.. for the interview i say study yourself.. i.e. why do you want to go to JMSS and what do you have that other potential students dont... :))
I'm probably going to come up with a variety of hypothetical questions and practise them haha.
Yeah I suppose that's the best way to go about it, being as honest as you can and really expressing your passion for science :). I'm probably going to come up with a variety of hypothetical questions and practise them haha.Sounds great Hannibal! :D Haha yea I guess most of us on this forum are just coming up with a variety of questions that may come up on the interview ;)
When do we get our results back?For the interview they said late July in the letter I believe, hopefully soon! We only get our actual results back if we are successful at the end of the year, and you have to ask for them :P.
Ahh man, all this waiting is getting me nervous :P
Ahh man, all this waiting is getting me nervous :P
Has anyone dreamed about getting their results, their interview or being at JMSS? I know I have :P.
Has anyone dreamed about getting their results, their interview or being at JMSS? I know I have :P.I've had a few dreams, most of them have been bad dreams to say the least. I think it's best that I leave the fine details until after the interviews :P
Has anyone dreamed about getting their results, their interview or being at JMSS? I know I have :P.yeah haha, I dreamed I got a below average and did not recieve an interview! :-[
yeah haha, I dreamed I got a below average and did not recieve an interview! :-[i have had quite a few dreams.. so nervous!!! yeah mines the same sorta compiled of swimming championships and medals and stuff and my involvement in school musicals and stuff... im trying to get some more science stuff...
I have decided to research Biomedicine: Microbiology and Immunology and talk about that lol! Really hope I do get an interview. I dont have much special things for the portfolio. Probably going to put certificates, pics of cricket trophies/medals, badges and year 7 NAPLAN results!
I have two Science Talent Search major bursaries, and a credit in a science test similar to ICAS. I would love to have some more sporting achievements haha, I play for a hockey club and that's it.LOL well I guess if it's like a 'big' award. Hahaha it's really all up to you I guess.
Is listing stuff from Primary School worth it?
LOL well I guess if it's like a 'big' award. Hahaha it's really all up to you I guess.Definitely haha, more is better :P.
What Sporting awards? Haha would it be worth it if i gave my athletics ribbons?? And also my swimming certificates??
Definitely haha, more is better :P.LOL just in case anyone is curious, my teacher in primary school made a typo in my surname for my principle award :/ aw... man Hahaha and it was never corrected.
I have two Science Talent Search major bursaries, and a credit in a science test similar to ICAS. I would love to have some more sporting achievements haha, I play for a hockey club and that's it.
Is listing stuff from Primary School worth it?
I got a high distinction in the science ICAS last year :PHaha nice! My last high distinction for Science was all the way back in Year 3... Super helpful :P
I suppose listing stuff from Primary School would be worth it if you can prove that you've consistently been that good, or are still as good as you were, as long as that good is really good.
It's the end of the Holidays! (for me at least, not sure about you guys)Haha ya... less than 24 hrs before school begins :) LOL during this holiday, I've spent a lot of time with family, bit of tutor hw and school hw and yea preparing for JMSS. LOL but then I'm worried that i won't make into the interview and all this preparation would be useless :? Hahaha i've finally settled down which area of science i am most passionate with. BAHAHA I was going to do some volunteering work, but then they are all in the west and north, while i belong to the SE suburbs :/ LOL oh well.
What have you guys done / been up to these holidays? Has much preparation gone on for JMSS?
Don't panic if you don't have too much to show. This stuff is important, but you don't need absolutely everything related to science in your portfolio. ;)
As long as you show them that you have a passion for science and you deserve to get a spot at the school you should make it in. Don't sweat it guys. :)
LOL and seeing how so many people have Science awards in the past and I never participated in anything that is Science related makes me feel like I have a smaller chance. :/ I'm more of a conversational type of man. Hahaha who have signed up for DAV this year?? I might ask my debating coordinator this term :) - I think my teacher might have forgotten about it.Yep DAV Debating D-Grade haha, we were undefeated until we lost our last clash (I was in it too :(). I was awarded best speaker in an earlier debate, but I never received a certificate or anything so I can't show it off :P. What other schools are in your division?
LOL and guys is it actually worth putting in my Chinese report, because my Chinese teacher wrote alot of positive comments- however... it is in Chinese. LOLim using my german one so probably worth putting it in there... translate it maybe idk
im using my german one so probably worth putting it in there... translate it maybe idkSomebody else that actually does German? Sehr gut!
LOL and guys is it actually worth putting in my Chinese report, because my Chinese teacher wrote alot of positive comments- however... it is in Chinese. LOLThat is so funny LOL :'). Does it list your scores as well? If so, I would put it in anyway... More is better I suppose ;).
last year people got interviews on July 31st! So nervous, I really want one! :-\ :DReally? OMG the dates are just coming closer and closer :o!
Really? OMG the dates are just coming closer and closer :o!
And to think the test was a month ago... and I still haven't finished preparing for the interview :-\what have you guys been doing to prepare for the interview?
what have you guys been doing to prepare for the interview?Nothing :(. I have way more free time now though, so I'll probably try and do a few trial interviews with my family.
Hahaha for me personally I only looked at my awards over this holiday and I tried to answer some questions which will more than likely be on the interview :P LOL in terms of 'Studying' I actually have been PROCRASTINATING ALOT and have a lot of tutor stuff to catch up :/. On top of that my history assignment is due soon and I've barely started Zzz ::)lol you guys have done way more than me!!! all i have done is created like a list of stuff...
LOL guys let's get out act back together (Y) :D
Well, I know for sure that there are some really good interview questions here: http://www.studential.com/redirect.php?404;http://www.studential.com/interviews/interview_questions.asp
They're not very specific (and for University application), so just replace "this University" with "JMSS" when you're asking them or getting them asked.
I hate to burst your bubble (and possibly be a hypocrite since I think I did the same thing when I was in Year 9) but I thought I'd chime in here.Ah, yeah thanks! I guess so.
In terms of questions you guys have, those are some pretty nice ones (especially the one Rilin mentioned [personally it's one of two favourite questions I like to ask people]) however I would be cautious from posting 'personal' responses since it is viewable to the general public. What everyone answers will be unique and there is no right or wrong answer. How you convey those responses will matter more than the content (if you're passionate or not etc.). I'm not saying you shouldn't post (I think it's a great idea to help each other), however it's better to have varied responses from applicants (helps you and others I guess).
It also goes to say that if everyone has the same response then differentiating between people will be harder as well which puts you and others in a bad position (where differentiating you from others will be from your body language etc.).
Just thought I'd share what I felt on all of this but keep up the good work! Not long to go guys (I think)...
Hello peeps,um, I dont think so otherwise someone would have posted on this thread!!
Just curious,
has anyone actually been notified of getting an interview?
Coz i'm like soooo nervous atm and just eating all the food in the house
just checking so i could prepare more food in case i dont get in
Keeping my hopes up
I really want an interview
Apparently it comes out after the MHS ones, which is the third week of August, all rumours though...Yeah personal responses are generally better responses though memorising them tend to drop its overall appeal imo.
And that's cool Indefatigable, I suppose personal responses evoke more of an emotional appeal :)
Yeah personal responses are generally better responses though memorising them tend to drop its overall appeal imo.Will definitely check eMails tomorrow! :P Thanks haha :).
As for that rumour.. I'm pretty sure that's false since that's way too late... if I had to take an educated stab (LOL) at email times then I'd say possibly tomorrow or next week by the latest (hunch is the Tuesday or Thursday/Friday next week).
^Just remember that's just what I think so don't take it word for word!
Will definitely check eMails tomorrow! :P Thanks haha :).
I'm checking it like every hour since the start of the week due to being so nervous ahahah but then on the other hand I don't expect the email to be there...just want to know whether or not I got one (even most likely I won't :P)Haha im sure you did fine!
Haha im sure you did fine!
To everyone: was it hard? Or easier than you expected? Just curious :P
Haha im sure you did fine!Easier than expected in general, but the essay topics were pretty detailed so you couldn't show off your general knowledge unfortunately :(. There was also less people than last year so that helps :P.
To everyone: was it hard? Or easier than you expected? Just curious :P
Yeah personal responses are generally better responses though memorising them tend to drop its overall appeal imo.Yeah thats true, arghh soo nervous now! :-\
To everyone: was it hard? Or easier than you expected? Just curious :PI reckon it was easier than I thought, however Science Reasoning was harder than I expected. I think we were quite lucky with our essay topic as it could have been more difficult like past years! I think I did the best of my abilities, so hopefully it all goes well, haha!
I'm checking it like every hour since the start of the week due to being so nervous ahahah but then on the other hand I don't expect the email to be there...just want to know whether or not I got one (even most likely I won't :P)
Hey guys I think we might get notified for an interview soon :) because the MHS people received it today.Really?? OMG!!! Hahaha same here I'm nervous and excited at the same time for the email...... :D 8) ::)
We receive the emails this week i think! Sooo nervous ;D
Hey everyone, its been ages since i checked atarnotes, On the test day i was looking for you guys, and even asked a few random people if they knew atarnotes (it was embarrassing :-[) Did anyone here end up meeting up, i know it was agreed to meet near the toilets but there 4 toilets! So did any of u guys meet, or did the whole idea kinda collapse :P ;)I saw SKGUN, we were sitting two metres away in the test :D. Also saw Godzerah during the break but that's about all, maybe at the interviews haha ;).
I saw SKGUN, we were sitting two metres away in the test :D. Also saw Godzerah during the break but that's about all, maybe at the interviews haha ;).yeah haha! I heard the interview dates are based on alphabetical order of your current schools. So I would be one of the first days or sessions (b).
yeah haha! I heard the interview dates are based on alphabetical order of your current schools. So I would be one of the first days or sessions (b).WHAT :O OMG my school start with a 'W' :/ that sucks....
WHAT :O OMG my school start with a 'W' :/ that sucks....We may be together haha, my school's name starts with a letter close to a W :).
yeah haha! I heard the interview dates are based on alphabetical order of your current schools. So I would be one of the first days or sessions (b).haha oh my god....
WHAT :O OMG my school start with a 'W' :/ that sucks....Mine is right at the end of the alphabet
Do any of you guys remember what you wrote in the second essay? As in to what depth and what kind of stuff?my second essay was a lot better than my first.. more fun facts and I got to list some of the inventors/discoveries linked to the atoms and cells :)
my second essay was a lot better than my first.. more fun facts and I got to list some of the inventors/discoveries linked to the atoms and cells :)Hahaha for me, I think my first essay was better than the 2nd one, because I can fully explain the whole circulatory system. Btw, i meet some JMSS students for Intermediate Table Tennis today :D Hahaha the students are really nice there and seem to have some really strict teachers. :P
my second essay was a lot better than my first.. more fun facts and I got to list some of the inventors/discoveries linked to the atoms and cells :)Yeah same haha, in my first essay the diagrams were hideous... And I was really panicking about which part of the heart goes where, since the last time I truly studied it was in Year 8. Hopefully we get our interview offers this week, I want it over and done with! :D
It turns out the school got the results back from EduTest yesterday, they just need to decide who gets interviews and what times they get, so we'll probably find out this weekend!Aha wow, how do you know this?
Aha wow, how do you know this?Kind of strange, but my dad called them on the phone and asked about it.
Kind of strange, but my dad called them on the phone and asked about it.haha wow! We emailed them like a month ago asking about how many people there were and when interviews should come out as well as how many people get them. They said they could not reveal any of that information! ;D
It turns out the school got the results back from EduTest yesterday, they just need to decide who gets interviews and what times they get, so we'll probably find out this weekend!thank god i was stressing thinking we would find out today... but yeah it will be later.... Just curious but when did you guys received an email?? I still have to wait till my brother comes home... :( SO ANXIOUS!!!!11:04am. Dont worry, I am sure you did great! Are you sure that was the email? Check again yourself or look in the junk mail.
Btw in case things turn to shit, does anyone have any tips to deal with rejection.\
i haven't got it :( others from my school have got it though. anyone got tips of how not to burst into teou get an interviears about this? :'( :'( :'(Don't worry, I'm sure you tried your best on the exam, just try to stay positive because they interview quite a lot of people ::)
Don't worry, I'm sure you tried your best on the exam, just try to stay positive because they interview quite a lot of people ::)
And also does you last name start with a letter close to the end of the alphabet??? because if it does it may take longer I'm not entirely sure though. I tried out for Macrob last year and I didn't get in :P but afterall doing the exam was just a good experience of what it feels like to be in an actual exam.
Goodluck though, really really hope you get an interview ;D ;D ;D ;D
My last name starts with D but my friends who have gotten the email have last names that start with S and L. In the back of my head i keep wishing that something will get me into JMSS but it all seems too late. *sigh* :-\*sigh* yea my last name start with a letter V.... it sucks will all this waiting and I know a friend who has a letter 'Z' got in.
And btw... will any of you think it is because they will continue the rest tomorrow???Actually yeah maybe, because the school staff only work until 4pm right????
I AM ONE OF THE LUCKY PEOPLE TO GET AN INTERVIEW!!!! On the 6th August.
My last name starts with D but my friends who have gotten the email have last names that start with S and L. In the back of my head i keep wishing that something will get me into JMSS but it all seems too late. *sigh* :-\You know, they might not have even finished sending emails out! haha ;D
OH WOW ;D ;D ;D ;Dawesome, what time?
mine is on the 6th of August as well ;) ;)
Guess I might be seeing you soon, haha :D :D
OMG I GOT AN INTERVIEW TOO!
11th of AUGUST
;D 8) :P
Yusss i got an interview! mines the week after the next monday :D, are they still doing group activities and stuff?Same haha! What time? We may see each other ;).
awesome, what time?Mine's at 12:09, I'm pretty sure ;D ;D
Now comes the job of photocopying everything good you've done in the last 2 years. Ahhh... this is gonna take a while for me ;)Do we HAVE to photocopy EVERYTHING???? Can we just show them the actual certificates?? ???
i'm pretty sure they keep it. LOL
Do we HAVE to photocopy EVERYTHING???? Can we just show them the actual certificates?? ???
i'm pretty sure they keep it. LOLOh right...Are you going to photocopy them in colour so it looks better, haha ;D
Oh right...Are you going to photocopy them in colour so it looks better, haha ;DI'm probably going to do that.
What kind of stuff are you guys putting in the portfolio? Certificates and achievements only?Everything! Although low achievments from Primary School are probably a waste of the person's time :P.
Oh right...Are you going to photocopy them in colour so it looks better, haha ;DYep colour is definitely more attractive. It's a pity we can't send medals and stuff like that too, only certificates.
Just to make sure, I remember during the test that we were going to be notified about having an interview in September, does this potentially mean that there might be a round two of interviews?!Don't think so, that may be the date when we receive our actual school offers though. September sounds pretty late for interviews, so I doubt there is a second round.
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(Have you not received something from the school yet? If not, I would definitely ring up the school tomorrow and ask for some information :). Good luck!
Have you not received something from the school yet? If not, I would definitely ring up the school tomorrow and ask for some information :). Good luck!hahaha thanks for the advice Hannibal :)
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(Put it this way, you still aren't 100% sure if you're into JMSS or not. Heaps of people including me haven't received the 'Magical E-mail.' Honestly, there is nothing much to do, just wait and HOPE... I'm not trying to sound cocky or anything but honestly it is not the end of the world.
Same haha! What time? We may see each other ;).yeah :D. 9:45 so earlyy...
Are any of you guys gonna take the day of the interview off?I actually have a state Bridge Building Comp to go to ON THE INTERVIEW DAY :-\
I actually have a state Bridge Building Comp to go to ON THE INTERVIEW DAY :-\i'd go with jmss interview tbh
So I really need to decide which one's more important ;)
Are any of you guys gonna take the day of the interview off?Most likely haha, for MHS I took the day before off as well, but that probably won't happen this time round :P
yeah :D. 9:45 so earlyy...Sweet, I'm on at around 11, little bit later on in the day.
I actually have a state Bridge Building Comp to go to ON THE INTERVIEW DAY :-\Obvious choice ;)
So I really need to decide which one's more important ;)
I actually have a state Bridge Building Comp to go to ON THE INTERVIEW DAY :-\Ask for a reschedule. When I had my interview I rescheduled my one since I had a state camp that I needed to go to on the same day (I got my interview a week earlier than prescribed though).. best to email today or tomorrow morning if I were you FizzyBubbles :)
So I really need to decide which one's more important ;)
But on the same note, good work everyone! Hard yards have paid off and now the fun bit (the interview ;) )
i'd go with jmss interview tbhYeah, I was kinda thinking of that as well, but I might try rescheduling if I can... ??? don't know if I really want to though :)
Hi guys, long time since I last replied :P
I got an interview yesterday as well :D
I only looked up some stuff the day before the test :P AND WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope I get in...........
Also, it says on the interview email to put documents into a clear sheet protector and folders will not be accepted. Does that mean put everything into ONE clear sheet protector or put the documents into several clear sheet protectors and bring it?
I'm assuming they won't look at the documents in the interview time, but instead after the interview. So bring it in ONE clear protector (If you bring two or more they might be misplaced or shuffled around among the others they've collected).haha yeah. Thanks for clearing that up, hopefully its not too bulky.
PS mine is at 11:59
I couldn't resist but register an AN account and point out that my interview is allocated in the same time slot as yours on the 11th. Congratulations to you and all the others for receiving an interview. ;u;thanks and to you to! ;D Good Luck everyone, big week!
All my documents fit in well with one clear sheet protector! Its great!
Mine isn't fitting in just one! And some of my certificates are quite large- there's no way i will fit these things in plastic pockets! Any solutions?did you take photocopies of everything? I did, in A4 size, no laminate. It fits for me, I have about 30 pieces of achievements etc. More than 30 pages though, because reports have like 10 pages in them.
did you take photocopies of everything? I did, in A4 size, no laminate. I haven't photocopied them yet! my report alone wont fit in the pocket though! (not with other papers in it)
oh thats true! I haven't photocopied them yet! my report alone wont fit in the pocket though! (not with other papers in it)i really dont know haha! It fits quite well for me! Do you have heaps of stuff? Also how far back was your oldest certificate in there?
Would it be okay if I brought multiple pockets and label them and then that way if they jumble them with other folders, it'll at least have my name on it right?
i really dont know haha! It fits quite well for me! Do you have heaps of stuff? Also how far back was your oldest certificate in there?yeah, i have quite a bit of stuff. And probably grade six- i was school captain so i thought it would be god to add that in there!
You could try put them into an A4 document wallet (check picture attached if you dunno it), if they don't fit into a single pocket.
Would it be worth putting in awards from Primary school? (apart from school captain, etc)I think so, i have a guitar certificate from year 2, I guess it will show them that I have some experience with music. Also, a cross country certificate where I came 4th in year 3.
Are people already getting interviews!? :'( Does that mean i didn't get in?
Well, if that's the case then I may as well put in my "Community Student of the Year" award from year 6 (it's kinda like Dux for my primary school). I'm also gonna put in some sporting certificates from primary school too.yeah! I think that is good. I have nominee for maths, nominee for English and nominee for dux award from year 6 graduation.
yeah! I think that is good. I have nominee for maths, nominee for English and nominee for dux award from year 6 graduation.
ugh...just realised my semester 2 report in yr8 was terrible....all of the teachers told me i got distracted by teachers :(, luckily my yr9 one is sooo much better :P
My year 8 was really bad too, and my year 9 was so much better!We'll we need to make a really good impression of ourselves :D
We'll we need to make a really good impression of ourselves :D
Good Luck to the people going to the interview tommorow! ;) Mine is Wednesday, just preparing portfolio and stuff now! How many items/documents do you guys have in your portfolio?Yep Good luck for your interviews ;D
Good Luck to the people going to the interview tommorow! ;) Mine is Wednesday, just preparing portfolio and stuff now! How many items/documents do you guys have in your portfolio?
I've just finished photocopying mine, and altogether it's around 20 documents. Most of them are just leadership and academic awards lmao.haha thanks!
Good luck to everybody doing it tomorrow! Convey your passion for science and I'm sure you'll do fine :D.Yeah, I mean most of what they are looking for is if you are actually or truly passionate about science.
My interview is tomorrow. :) nervous right now! Does any one have any idea on the questions they might ask on the 1-to-1 interview?If you are passionate about science then give it your best shot and I'm sure you'll get into JMSS ;D some questions to help you might be:
I couldn't resist but register an AN account and point out that my interview is allocated in the same time slot as yours on the 11th. Congratulations to you and all the others for receiving an interview. ;u;
I had my interview today! It was fun, especially the group activities. But when it came to the 1 to 1 interview, i may have not smiled as much as I was supposed to and i stuttered 2 times.. :( does any one think that that will affect my outcome.. :( But I think I answered the questions well :)Glad to hear that it went well minosne! And personally I wouldn't be too worried by it all since it's the quality of your answers that matter most :)
and for the problem solving, I couldn't work it out so I just wrote down as much as I could...
is that ok as well? :(
dammit.. I'm so worried.. :-\
Had an interview today. It was pretty fun, and I really worried waaay too much for how it would be. ;)Yay nice stuff! I'm sure you will do super well SKGUN, you have the passion for science so all you have to do is express it :).
Yeah, I suppose I did pretty well. I'm not going to spoil it for any of you other guys, the experience just wouldn't be the same if I told you how everything went. Good luck SKGUN11! I'm sure you'll do well! :D
I just remembered for the interview I've forgotten to say some of the real important things that may have improved the quality of my answers. Is the interview going to affect the chance of me getting into jmss real bad?????its not alll about the interview and hey, maybe they were interested in the things you still said! Im pretty sure that the group activities contribute more to your chance of getting in, and if you did well in that, you might as well get in :D
SOOOOOOO SCARED+HEART ATTACK+PANIC ATTACK!!!
the group activities contribute more to your chance of getting in, and if you did well in that, you might as well get in :D
Noo please I hope this don't happen LOL because I didn't get to talk in the group interview...I don't even get the questionDon't worry Shinkaze ;D Don't forget, the 1 to 1 interview and your portfolio still counts alot ;D so if you did well in your 1 to 1 interview and had a good report you should do fine ;)
Noo please I hope this don't happen LOL because I didn't get to talk in the group interview...I don't even get the question
Don't worry if you didn't do too well on the interviews, I'm sure you're still going to get in. :)
Tbh, it's not the end of the world if you don't get in, you're already really far and I know you've put lots of effort in, but congratulate yourself on achieving just that, don't punish yourself. You got an interview, how awesome is that? You got further than probably 60% of other people, that's a really good effort. Just be grateful for the fact that you were able to step up and beat all of them. I think the self-accomplishment is what truly matters. To me, getting into JMSS would be what makes my life perfect :P, but even without it I can still have a perfect life. By praising myself and making every moment the best, I can choose to have a much more perfect and enjoyable life than if I was a JMSS student - it's all how you look at it. Look at some of the others on this forum that couldn't get into any selective schools and still got a 99.95 Atar and have been successful with their careers and dreams. The fact that you have beaten the other 60% of people who tested for an interview and failed proves to me that you are capable of doing well in life. I think even the motivation and determination to get into JMSS and by joining these forums you're already half way there. :D :D
Don't worry guys, you're all going to get in. :) All I'm saying is that you shouldn't panic because failing isn't all that bad. Failing just the end of this chapter and the start of the next. And by ending this chapter with a fail you WILL have better chapters after it. Getting into JMSS might seem great, but failing to get in isn't that bad. :D
well said bro, well saidYou'll be fine in a few days :)
I guess you're right but this is like a feeling thing. I'm panicking but i guess i just need a day or two to get over it! :D
Don't worry Shinkaze ;D Don't forget, the 1 to 1 interview and your portfolio still counts alot ;D so if you did well in your 1 to 1 interview and had a good report you should do fine ;)
Does the portfilio count for alotWell when I had my interview today, the interviewer looked through all my certificates and he also looked at my report, both of them :) But also, during my interview I saw that he had a marking sheet for the 1 to 1 interview which probably is going to get marked so don't worry if your report or portfolio isn't as good as you want it to be. ;D ;D I'm sure you'll do excellent ;)
:-\ :'( :-[ :(
Mine isn't very good, because in my science the teacher stuffed up and only did 1 assessment last semester - which i did badly in
:'( :( ???
Any one please tell me about the interview.Plz
How long was the one on one interview and what were the other activities like. Where they made to be impossible or was it possible. And about the 3 percent of the school, does 3 percent have to get in
So is the group activity and problem solving activity different
2.5 The applicant will receive advice of the outcome of the application by 12 September 2014
Apparently it's your birthday? :P
Apparently it is :P
Im just worried about the 3% rule.
lol the 3% rule sometimes is scary. Theres around 170 students at my school and with 3% thats around 5 students. And theres around 5 students that took the test swell so I'm not that worried. I'm more worried about my test as I don't feel as though I did a good job
You're so lucky dude, 100 people in my school, 10 people got the interview, oh gawd ..... Oh gawdddddddddddddddddd. It's sucks so hard for meeeeeeeeeeee.
Lol going on this forum and doing anything you possibly can to prepare for your interview has already classified you as awesome.
For me, even if the 3% rule doesn't really matter, Im still wondering how I went in the test.
Anyone know when we find out if we are accepted or not?
Yea same here, i'm the only one from my school, its interview that is worrying me
Thanks for the tips
same here, my interview is tomorrow
I just had my interview, i was so nervous but it got better :D. Unfortunately someone else took leadership in the group roles so i was like nooooooooooooooooo!. The 1 on 1 interview was good but there was so much talking and it was so fast paced. I think i had the vice principal :O. Well, see how we go!
Good job and I'm glad that it got better! Ahahah it's okay someone else in my group took the leadership role too! Don't worry about it too much because take like half the people anyway! The 1 on 1 interview was fast paced for me too! Wow the vice principal :O Was it a woman or a guy? Apparently the guy vice principal is one of my teacher's husband LOLIkr! Its a lady actually
Good luck and I hope we can all get in!
He is very friendly and 'seemed' impressed with me, because I talked a lot about microbiology/immunology.
Haha that was awesome! Met Indefatible Lover and Sassy at the interview, and also had the lady vice principle for the individual which I reckon I did well in :). The maths problem was a little difficult for me to answer but I showed my working out at least. I tried to take the leadership in the group tasks and it sort of worked out I reckon ;).
Hopefully everyone in AN makes it :D.
I don't think I'll get in, I didn't do the problem solving and I wrote some pretty random as hell crap -.- Everyone in my school that did the interview that day did the problem solving, BB john monash. ._.
Yeah don't worry about it, I forgot about the boat coming back as well haha :P. Sassy pulled out his phone to show me the structure of the interview from messages on AN without knowing it was me, was pretty funny ;).
maan, i dont want to wait a whole month D:
lol great work.
wouldn't it be awesome if we can all get in and then we can introduce ourselves to each other then catch the bus together lol
How do people actually recognise others during the interview...I HAD THE SAME QUESTION!!!
Rilin said he saw me but then I couldn't recognise him LOL
I HOPE EVERYONE HERE CAN GET IN SERIOUSLY
you guys are the best and we should meet up or something one day
Don't give up hopes! I didn't do the problem solving either (more like I finished in 1 minute and then didn't realise the boat have to come back) Everyone in my school figured out the problem solving too so I was the only one .-. PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP HOPES!!
Did anyone else get their group activities about a zombie apocalypse!
I HAD THE SAME QUESTION!!!
was it called circus tricks and had the elephant, dog, cat and mouse?
DID YOU GET IT? I didn't even understand it so it was really sad...
Good job during the interview though!
Thanks, but i didn't get the zombie question
both were really hard to understand, but my group got most of the second activity (the one with the fences and how it spreads from block to block)
:'(
LOL don't worry I didn't get it either.
We understood the second activity but just didn't get enough time to work it out so all of us just grab the marker and start drawing random crosses on the sheet ahahaha!
Thanks, but i didn't get the zombie questionour second activity we did most if it cuz i told them at the last minute to split up and do the graph ;)
:'(
I HAD THE SAME QUESTION!!!That was too hard for me in 5 minutes. I thought I had it in the bag until I realised you had to worry about them fighting on the other side :(. Chances are I probably saw you Denuka ;).
any of you have an interview this morning?
Lol I think everyone doesn't wanna wait. :( :(
I want to just get my results now so I don't have to think about it whilst doing my hw
already killing me D:arghh i know how you feel! ???
Anyone request for their test results yet? And if you did, can you tell me how and who to request it from :o?
We can get our test results!?we can? lol
We can get our test results!?
It's so hard to choose, theres so many good ones
Yeah haha, apparently it's at the end of the year though and you have to ask the school directly, so a lot more waiting to come :P. What electives are you going to do if you get in?
I highly endorse Quarks 2 Quasars if you are a physics personYeah that looks interesting, as well as Logic to Magic and Pharmecutical Science :).
The science electives and Singapore maths challenge and the other stuff are soooo temptingOmg yeah I saw that! What about the reef and rainforest trip? That looks awesome!
Omg yeah I saw that! What about the reef and rainforest trip? That looks awesome!
That reef and rainforest trip looks amazing! I saw a youtube video of it a few weeks ago and it really motivated me to try harder to get into JMSS. :Dhaha yeah I saw that. So cool.
Here's a video montage of this year's trip for you guys if you're interested. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrz4-q9lVLQ
Are we talking about the science electives coz then I wanna do the nanoscience, unit 2 physics on motion or the cells to systems
Woo mee too, Physics stuff for da winwoooooooop!
Woo mee too, Physics stuff for da win
So basically, if you don't get an email, you don't get in???i think so for both questions ???
Do they at least send an email saying, that you were unsuccessful????
I really want to do Bioinformatics too! As well as quarks to quasars, that looks really interesting! :)
So basically, if you don't get an email, you don't get in???
Well according to the website they say that they give a week for a student to accept the offer and if declined they give the offer to the next successful student. So I think that they won't give you an email saying you were unsuccessful as you still have chances until all paces are filled - Term 4 (- which is when we get our Edutest results. Apparently our schools already have them.) So just wait until term 4. On the 12th of September they give offers out to up to the top 200/400 students (I say 'up to' because on the website it says that it depends on how many spots they have because of the other students)... and then they go down the list of the 400 kids until all spots are filled.Thanks for the info :) I kind of figured it was something along those lines...
:)
Sorry for being repetitive in my message guys and the unnecessary information.
Wait soooooooo......... They'll chose half of the members that went for the interview O.o? Thanks for the info btw ^.^
Can't wait to get in :P
When you say they give offers out to the top 200 students, what about the 3% rule then? What if a school had 6 students who were in the top 200 students and 3% is only 2 students, do they only select the top 2 students out of the 6 then?Well, then as someone posted earlier, they would move onto the other people who got interviewed and give them a place instead.
That's right :P. They interview a lot more than other schools.
If I was going to be able to get in, I would get a second round offer because my school's enrolment is only 100 and 10 people from my school got an interview so :PI hope we all get in :)
Hopefully I can get a second round offer hahaa
Oh god as the date gets closer , im getting more nervous. Omg omg omg omg omg omg !!!!
()
Guys I found this on the JMSS website..so the results for the successful people come out on the 12th. :)
Awesome, so it will come BY the 12th :D it can be earlier xD
Lol 11 days will pass quickly before we know it. Waiting...waiting...waitingYeah I know it really killing me
I've been offered a place :). Still deciding whether or not to accept, should make my mind up soon.
Good luck everyone!
I have been offered a place too OMG literally crying of happiness right now!!!!!!!!
YAY!!! I got in!! Good work to everyone else who did as well.. and to those who didn't, dont worry, VCE is the final exam so really buckle down and work hard, but good job on trying. SO GOOD JOB EVERYONE
btw guys for orientation day we must meet up!!!
But at the end of the day, I still feel proud of myself passing the JMSS test cause that's already hard to pass. :') :') :') :') :')Mate, well done that is a very mature approach! To anyone unsucessful: Please do not put yourself down, the exam was difficult as it is and being on of the few to be invited for an interview is incredible! Im sure that is "show-off" worthy as it is! I believe it is a tough choice for JMSS to pick students after most were great! Take this feeling and take it on for the rest of your life. Last year I was not successful into Nossal HS and I was devestated since I studies HEAPS and cared so much! But, I took that pain this year and worked even harder and didn't consider failure an option. So, congratulate yourselves for making it towards the interviews because that is great! Try out next year and im sure you will be successful! ;)
Well good luck to all the guys that were offered a place for JMSS in 2015. I'm sure you guys will have a great time.
To the guys that did not pass the interview like me, you should not hate on yourself. Passing the JMSS test is already a great achievement :)
Good luck for the future to everyone out there!
Last year it was around the end of November or the start of December (I think).
Can't wait to meet you guys! :D
yeah i reckon near the reception!
I am so going to crash this meeting :)
Btw, congrats to everyone
Is anyone going to do DAV debating?
Hi, I am new to ATARNOTES and I also got into JMSS. Wondering when our scores for each test get sent.I don't think they actually send you a letter with your results, you have to personally ask the school apparently :P.
:D
Yh. Actually I got atarnotes in around march when we enrolled for the entrance exam. It surprised me how many comments we've made during this process and how many people have appeared on this test talk.
I believe there's gonna be a lot of people wanting to go to the reception because of this.
I can't wait till December and meet everyone there.
There's probably around 3 months left before anyone reminds anyone lol.
:D
They said that we have to personally ask once all places have been filled - so at the start of Term 4 we can request them :D
Yh great idea. I like the leaning one. Apart from that, maybe we could tell each other what we're wearing on orientation day.
I mailed my stuff to jmss.
I've been offered a place :). Still deciding whether or not to accept, should make my mind up soon.
Good luck everyone!
My dad went to jmss and gave all of it there
My dad went to jmss and gave all of it thereSame here! Info night is on October 8th. I got my name on the list to recieve my scores for the tests in November too :D
I am so going to crash this meeting :)
I'm with you on this one! :PHAHAH you guys can crash the meeting for me since I probably would have left by then (you guys probably don't know but it's co-curricular on the same day [but we don't have it] so we can leave straight after or during lunch) :P
What about imessage or skype chat?
What about imessage or skype chat?
Probably should have posted in this thread a while ago but you guys are WAY too keen for JMSS that it somewhat scares me a little (in a good way of course :')
If it isn't too personal to ask, are you leaving JMSS next year?LOL no I'm not leaving JMSS next year since I'll be in Year 12! I said I was leaving since school for us ends at 12:40pm on that day so we can leave though more than likely I might be staying back to catch a few names from different people next year!
Hey does anyone know what we should do about work experienceYou arrange jobs for yourself and although it is a tiresome process, you do learn a few things along the way like structuring a CV and so forth. Depending on what you want to do, if you want to go to a hospital then you want to get a CV written by October since placements open really quickly. If you're more into research, Monash Uni has some work experience placements in lots of different areas which you can apply for (like Biology, Chemistry and Physics) though I personally suggest going some place else (not because it's better) but it's more unique and 'cooler' I suppose :P
My school is making us finalize plans with the employers now, but if I go to JMSS the work experience dates may be different
Do we arrange jobs ourselves, or during the first week or two do we figure it out
To any year 10's/11's at JMSS; what did you guys do last year about work experience?
Unrelated but if someone on this thread (or is reading this) came to the school today at roughly 2pm to hand in your JMSS forms then hopefully I wasn't too awkward in randomly saying hello to you LOL (you'll know who you are I guess :P)
Just get a placement before the end of Term 1 next year or before Week 3 in Term 2 and you should be fine :)
Probably the same day as our schools now?
But there's also the three day camp. Is that at the start of school ?
Yh maybe.
But jmss is a public school so I assume it's around the sane day public school starts
School time ?
8:40-3:15. Im not sure about Wednesdays though coz thats cocurricular
I'm pretty sure that the co-curricular is optional, it's just recommended that you do it. That ends at 5:00 or 5:30 I think
Co-curricular is not optional, but compulsory up until year 11 if I'm correct! And it starts at 1:30 up to 3:15
Can you do two co curricular activities? Can you tell us more about how they are run? :) Cheers!Depending on what co-curricular you pick, you may have to change every Term since they only run for certain periods of time (E.g Sport runs per Term whilst Drawing may run for a Semester for example).
Undeadset15 has pretty much got it right where it runs from 1:30pm - 3:30pm and that's about it really... I'd wait till Info Night before you ask any more about it though since Info Night will answer most questions officially so it's best to wait till then I guess (same goes for the laptop question).
In regards to start of school, wait till it officially arrives but I believe Year 10's start on the Wednesday actually (that is January 28).
I heard we have to get our own laptops this year, anyone know anything more about it?Not really. We should just wait until info night though, that might clear all these things up
What is everyone thinking about doing for the science fair?
If you are talking about the science fair that you complete in Year 10 and present in October, then all I can say is calm down! Haha!! You have more than a year before it, and you discuss a lot of it during class! Don't worry too much about next year right now! Just don't worry all and let it all fall into place! Relax, and enjoy your holidays haha!!
What're you guys going to do on the holidays? :P
haha, nice question ;) :p
yeah, sleep... shopping, eating, and more sleeping... i think im going overseas, not sure though...
how about you?
What time is your information nights? Mine is 6pm-7:30pm I think
The laptop program for 2015 will not be funded by the government. In previous years each student is given a laptop to use at no cost ( funded by the government ) which is returned to the school after the 3 years ( it was a thinkpad x220i ). For 2015 each student will have to purchase their own ipad ( the same as previous years ) as well as ( Not 100% sure about this ) have to buy your own laptop also. I believe there is no restriction on the BYO laptop ( unlike the ipad ) so you can get Windows, Apple or even Linux laptops. It is all up to you. Personally I hate to have to take the laptop to school and home each day. Maybe I will just keep the laptop at school and use my desktop at home and just carry the files.so we get to buy whatever laptop we want? How do u know this?
See you all at the information night!!
so we get to buy whatever laptop we want? How do u know this?
That is my understanding from reading the literature about the laptop program from JMSS and also from talking to the staff. Although personally I think there may be some issue because unless the school specifies a particular OS, then everyone will be using different OS and there will be compatibility issues ( Linux people can't use MS Word etc ). Anyway like I said I am not 100% use but that is my understanding.true, yeah.
Don't worry.nah we will have to get an ipad.
We'll find out the conditions on the information night.
I'm going to the 6:15-7:30 pm session, hope to see you there!
:)
P.S Getting any Laptop we want sounds good! Do you think they would let us do the same about the Tablet?
nah we will have to get an ipad.Turns out now that you can get ANY device for both your laptop and tablet, as long as it meets certain specifications. Yay! :)
Turns out now that you can get ANY device for both your laptop and tablet, as long as it meets certain specifications. Yay! :)hahaha yeah! Im just gonna bring my iPhone 6! And, a convertible laptop that Ill get in like January! :) Cant wait for orientation day!
hahaha yeah! Im just gonna bring my iPhone 6! And, a convertible laptop that Ill get in like January! :) Cant wait for orientation day!
hahahaha shieet, better watch out for you then mate! Haha, rlly with the laptop thing? Im considering lenovo yoga 2 pro.
You are going to get mugged by me on Orientation day ...
Wait, I shouldn't have told you that, should I?
Can you remember to put your hand on your head so I know I am mugging the right person? I hate to mug someone only to find out later that it is the wrong person and end up with a couple of bricks ...
Seriously, I think you have to get your laptop earlier as I remember reading somewhere that you have to bring your primary device to Orientation Day in December but I don't remember where it was that I saw that ...
Hey, thats what I was gonna do! Maybe we should work together? SKGUN11, watch out!
A new computer is nice, but it is not essential. Your computer can't be that bad. I'm bringing a 4 year old Lenovo thinkpad and it weighs a ton. Im not getting a phone or tablet either and I have an old HTC desire running android 2.
School will still be great and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you! :)
You should definitely at least give it a go, apparently everyone is really keen to learn... A lot different to my school haha. My Preparation:
- Year 8 Science Quest revision & a few questions
- Year 9 Science Quest all questions, reviews and test
- Year 10 Science Quest light reading at night (Just in case one of the topics come up)
- 4 maths & 4 science ICAS tests on the weekend
- JAC selective class program (Extremely difficult, not a single >70% mark)
- Khan Academy light watching
- JAC extra revision material
- Year 9 Maths Essential most questions, reviews and test (Help from tutor)
Sooo... I'm looking at >2 hours of work a day :'(. If I get in I'm sure it will all be worth it - LOL. But yeah, if you want to go into Science/Engineering definitely go for it :).
i just wanted to ask how long have you been preparing for and what is jac class program and one last thing, did you buy the icas practice tests
